DIRECTOR ’S THOUGHTS

As a child in the fifties, Dean Martin and Marilyn Monroe were among my most adored performers. Dean was a master of charm and perhaps the best straight-man ever when teamed with Jerry Lewis. He rarely lost his charm, ex-cept for some of his grittier roles, after the break-up with Jerry. And nowhere was it more apparent than on his tv show, Dean hated to rehearse and relied on cue cards during the show. Since it was live TV, that led to some deliriously funny moments of error and improv matched only by Sid Caesar’s Your Show of Shows and The Carol Burnett Show.

Marilyn was - surprise, surprise - one of my dearest romantic fantasy figures, but I also loved the credibility she brought to the comic bimbette roles she so often portrayed. [Yes, bimbette. Bimbo is actually the term for males of a similar stripe; okay, class is dismissed]. It is a challenge few are able to master as she and our Lori have done. Often overlooked is her rare ability to sell a song without ever losing character.

Although they thrived in Hollywood at the same time, their only opportunity to work together was the film they were in at the time of Marilyn’s tragic and still mysterious demise. We’ve tried to capture the warmth, wit and charm we believe they would have shared had a ‘Love Special’ like this ever been produced. I know my singing pales next to the incomparable Dino, the best crooner of them all, but we hope our efforts recall the delightful energy and innocent ribaldry of these two charismatic icons of twentieth century American entertainment.

Please enjoy, and sing along, if you like. We have microphones so you won’t drown us out.

–Jim Iaquinta
