Le tterstothe 41 Memory of water and blinding Sir, As one of the co-aut hors of the "famo us" article in Nature in 1988 1 on high dilu tion s and a former member of the Benveniste's tea m , I wo uld L ike to comm ent the recent article "The history of the Memory of Water" by Yolene Th omas. 2 She report s some of the prob lems with reproducibility encountered during the "memory o f wate r" experime nts, and suggests that uncontrolled parameters (eg electromagnetic pollution or quality of water) were most probably respo nsible when poor results were obtained. I do not fully agree with this presentation of the events. Indeed, the difficulties of reprod ucibility were qu ite atypical and did not appear to result from a weak "signal" among a noisy backgro und. This was obvious with the experi- ments on isolated heart and with the co agu lat io n exp eriments. The main iss ue was that in some circumstances, "effect" and "no effect" were rando mly distributed regardless their origin (negative or positive samples). The strangeness of these disturbances was particu- larly highligh ted du ring the de mo nstrat ions that J. Benveniste organized regularly with the isolated heart system to convince other scientists of the reality of the phenomenon. These demonstrations wer e ge ne ra lly perform ed in two steps. In a first step, negative and positive samples were pro duced (high dilutions, sam- ples of "informed water" or digital files) and were blinded with a code by an observer not belonging to the Benven iste's team. Some negative and po sitive sa m p les were kept unb linded. In a second step, Ben veniste's team tested all samples (blinded a nd unb linded) . When all measur ements were co m plete, the results were sent to the observer and the code was b rok en . In these demonstrations, the biological effects (and absence of effect) were usually clear-cut. However, the results of b lind ed samples were almost always at rand om and d id not fit the expected results: some "controls" were active and some "active" samples were without effect on the biological system. We co uld ind eed hypothesize that ac t ive samples had been "erased" by exte rna l influence. It is however more difficult to explain how inactive sam ples had been transformed into "active samples". And we are unable to explain why the open samples (positive and negative samples), prepared a nd tested at th e same time as blind ed samples, gave systematically co rrect ( ie ex- pected) results. It is di fficu lt to summarize these n um er ou s and disturbing experiment s in a few lines, bu t I have described them in details in a recent book that tells the whole "memory of water " story." This ca n be rea d free on Internet (www.mille-rnondes.fr): despite the succes- sive techn ical improvements of the different experi- menta l systems, the weirdness persisted . Taking these experiments as a whole, it appea rs that the results reflected more the expecta tions of the experimenters (and of the lab team) than supposed properties of the samples. These strange results culminated with the DA RPA experiments perfo rmed in 200 I on the coag ulation model using an automatic rob ot ana lyze r. Ag a in the importance of the experimenter wa s confirmed, bu t the expert s could not conclude tha t an effect relate d to "digital biology" had been evidenced. Interestingly, the ex per ts of the team commissioned by DAR PA concluded" tha t unk nown "experimenter effects" co uld explain these odd results, but tha t a theoretical framework was necessary to comprehend them; and the y added: " Without such a framework; continued research on this approach ro digiral biology would be at worst an endless pursuit without likely conclusion, or at best premature." I fu lly ag ree with this conclusion. Indeed, if th e presence o f ce rta in peop le is necessary to obtain a biological effect whereas other people "block" it, are we talking abo ut water prope rtie s? We all know that water is fascinating, but perhap s it is time now to ask whether wa ter is really in volved in the biological effec ts of the "high dilutions" and "digital biology". The fact that a simple bl ind ing of the experimental samples ind uced such tro ub le is, in my opinion, the ke y to und erstand what occ u rre d d ur in g the "memory of wa te r" story and the " high d iluti on s" experiments reported by other teams. The early experiments with basop hils were also not free from blindi ng d istur- bances. Indeed, the usual large and regular waves of de g ra nu la ti o n (or inhibition of degranulation) routi- nely obtained by some tea m s beca me unnoticeable during large-scale blind experime nt s.j-" In conclusion, I prop ose tha t systernatic assessment of blinding vs no bl in din g should be performed by a ut ho r s investigating "high dilutions" (o r related) effects. Of course blinding of the samples should be perform ed by an independent scientist who doe s not take part in the expe rime nta l proce ss. But per ha ps some will prefer an "endless pursuit" .
