“They went to Munich in ‘72 with dreams and they came home in coffins,” said Ankie Spitzer, widowed at 26 when her husband Andre Spitzer was gunned down during a German attempt to rescue the Israelis taken hostage by the Palestinian Black September group.

Hours after learning of her husband’s death, Spitzer returned to the Israeli team’s living quarters at the Olympic Village.

In the early morning hours of September 5, 1972, Arab terrorists broke into the Israeli quarters of the Olympic Village. After seizing the coaches in the first apartment and wounding wrestling coach Moshe Weinberg in the face, the terrorists forced Weinberg to lead them to other Israelis. There, they seized six wrestlers and weightlifters, including Yosef Romano. As the athletes were being led back to the coaches’ apartment, Weinberg attacked the terrorists, enabling wrestler Gad Tsobari to escape but resulted in Weinberg’s death by gunfire. Inside the apartment, Romano attacked the intruders, slashing terrorist Afif Ahmed Hamid in the face with a knife, and grabbing his AK-47 away from him before being shot to death by another terrorist. Romano’s body was left at the feet of his teammates as a warning. The other nine Israeli athletes were killed during a bungled German rescue attempt at the airport.

“There was blood running down the stairs,” Spitzer recalled of her visit to the apartment where her husband and his teammates were held. “Standing in the room and looking at the huge holes in the wall where they shot Yosef Romano…I said to myself, ‘If this is how my husband spent his last hours, somebody is going to pay the price and the price is not revenge but justice’.”

Her vow was echoed by Ilana Romano, Yosef’s widow. They believe the lives of the Israelis were endangered

unnecessarily by German and Olympic officials keen to move them out of the Olympic village so that the Games could continue.

SECRET REPORTSFor 20 years, the relatives were in the dark about the details

of the rescue attempt at the nearby Furstenfeldbruck air base in an operation so bungled that if it had not ended in tragedy it would have been a comedy of errors.

The Germans refused an Israeli request to send a commando team with experience in hostage stand-offs to carry out the rescue. Instead, they deployed a group of untrained policemen to free the Israelis who were being held on two German military helicopters.

“They were incapable of rescuing the nine Israelis who were still alive on the helicopters,” Spitzer said.

In 1992, after appealing for information on a German television show, she received 80 documents from an anonymous German official who had access to the archives which the German government had for two decades denied existed.

Using those papers, she said she embarrassed German authorities into allowing her to copy thousands of government documents on the Munich attack.

OLYMPIC RECOGNITIONMore than 5,000 people have signed an online petition -

and we urge you to do so - (http://www.change.org/petitions/international-olympic-committee-minute-of-silence-at-the-2012-london-olympics) urging the International Olympics Committee to observe one minute of silence at the upcoming games in London this summer in memory of the 11 Israeli athletes murdered at the 1972 Munich Olympic Games.

“These men were sons; fathers; uncles; brothers; friends; teammates; athletes. They came to Munich in 1972 to play as

athletes in the Olympics; they came in peace and went home in coffins,” Ankie Spitzer writes in the petition.

Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon met with Spitzer and Ilana Romano to sign the petition and give the women a copy of a letter he wrote to the International Olympics Committee asking that the 2012 London Olympics open with a moment of silence in memory of the slain Israeli Olympians.

“We have requested a minute of silence during the opening ceremonies of the Olympics starting with the ’76

Montreal Games,” explained Spitzer. “Repeatedly, these requests have been turned down. The 11 murdered athletes were members of the Olympic family; we feel they should be remembered within the framework of the Olympic Games.”

She added that silence is a fitting tribute since it “contains no

statements, assumptions or beliefs and requires no understanding of language to interpret.”

Yosef Romano’s daughter, Oshrat Romano Kandell, her husband Amir, and Yosef’s grandchildren, Asaf, Lihi and Alon, will bring in the Torch at the Opening Ceremonies of the 2012 JCC Maccabi Games at the FedExForum on Sunday evening, August 5.

Joseph Cedar’s Footnote is a wry, wise little film that revels in the

cataclysmic import of a life’s most ostensibly trivial details. With the acerbic flair of the Coen brothers and a command of montage that recalls early documentaries by Errol Morris, Footnote zigzags

around severe Eliezer (Shlomo Bar Aba) and his gregarious son Uriel

(Lior Ashkenazi), two philologists of diametrically opposed persuasions whose strained relationship risks being torn apart completely when Eliezer is awarded the prize he’s

lusted for since he devoted his life to Jewish lore.

But Eliezer’s award was a mistake – it was intended for his son...

Dinner 6:15 pm, Free Movie 7:15 pm

Paul Giamatti stars as Barney Panofsky, who meets the great love of his life, Miriam (Rosamund Pike), at the most inopportune time imaginable: his

marriage to his second wife (Minnie Driver), a wealthy Jewish princess and compulsive shopper. Narrated by Barney as a confessional, the film covers 30 years of his unusual journey. Standing in the wings is Barney’s father, Izzy (Dustin Hoffman), who continues to stick by him as his loyal right-hand man. Through it all, Barney experiences numerous highs and lows, but manages to consistently surprise everyone with unforeseen acts of altruism and kindness that turn him into the quintessential modern hero.

“The character has given Giamatti another great role after Sideways and Harvey Pekar and he runs with it; no wonder he won a Golden Globe for this.” At the Movies

Camp

Meet the Counselors DayEach year, the MJCC summer camp staff is chosen from students, graduates and faculty from schools and colleges throughout the United States and World! A camp’s biggest strength is its counselor staff and that is why we actively seek people with personality, character, stability and warmth. Most importantly, we look for staff members with a sincere desire to work with children with the hope of making a positive difference in their lives. Our counselors must be able to be positive role models

by setting good examples through their words, actions, appearance and relationships.

Join us on June 3rd at 11:00am so you and your children can meet these counselors (and more specifically their own), see their friends and get their first taste of what summer 2012 is going to be like!

CONGRATuLATIONS TO DEBORAH MEIS!

The 2012 Indianapolis Regional YAGP semi-final competitions brought tremendous pressure but also fantastic resolve. Deborah Meis walked away with a second place in the classical category. In contemporary dance, Deborah shared the podium with 12 finalists from as far away as Canada, Maryland, California and Washington, DC. Based on her outstanding performance, Deborah was awarded a full scholarship to Ballet West Summer Intensive and was invited to the YAGP finals to be held in New York City. About 1000 dancers from all around the world participate in NY finals.

For the past year and a half Deborah Meis has been working with Alexei Moskalenko, Director of the MJCC Markell School of Dance to prepare for the Youth America Grand Prix competition (YAGP),the most prestigious international ballet competition for students.

“Deborah came to our school about 2 years ago from another Memphis area teacher, Deborah Wexler, ready to go to the next pre-professional level in her training” – said Mr. Moskalenko. “I decided that we needed to prepare 2 classical variations and one contemporary solo to show the versatility in her abilities. Deborah has a lot of talent and my goal was to find repertoire which would show it the best”.

Deborah also teaches ballet in Memphis, studies organ and piano and performs with IPC Touring Choir throughout the United States. Deborah comes from a homeschooled family of 6 children, and lives in Millington, TN.

About YAGP:Now in its 13th Season, YAGP has awarded over $2 million in scholarships to the leading dance schools worldwide. Over

25,000 dancers worldwide have participated in YAGP’s international workshops, competitions, and audition classes. Over 200 YAGP alumni are now dancing with 50 companies around the world, including American Ballet Theatre, New York City Ballet, Paris Opera Ballet and San Francisco Ballet, among others.

The annually sold-out Youth America Grand Prix Closing Night Gala featuring YAGP finalists on the same program as the stars of the world’s leading dance companies, 2012 “Stars of Today Meet the Stars of Tomorrow,” take place at Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater on Friday, April 27, 2012.

YouthMaccabi Assistant Coaches (MACs)

Just because you can’t play in the games, doesn’t mean you can’t be involved. Many of you have participated in the past and want to help the current participants have the life changing experience that you had…..and here is your chance. Introducing the Maccabi Assistant Coaches (MAC) program! Through this program, teens/young adults between the ages of 17-20 will help coach all of the different teams involved in Maccabi. Help ensure everyone has the same unforgettable experience that you had by picking up an application at the front desk. If you have any questions please contact Jason Redd, 901-761-0810 ext. 1117 or [email protected].

The school year has ended, but it’s never too early to start thinking about what you are going to do for afterschool next year. If you are looking for the best afterschool program in Memphis, look no further then MJCC Study Shack! With qualified teen staff, an amazing game room and a brand new Youth Yoga component (every Friday), this is the perfect environment for your child to improve his/her health and report card! We provide a safe environment for your children to complete their homework,

get guided art projects in our Art House, play in the indoor/outdoor playground(s) and release the energy they have been holding in all day. Is your child enrolled in another amazing JCC activity such as swim team, sports, dance or tae kwon do? If so don’t worry, our staff will

make sure they have changed clothes and we will escort them to and from the activity. Purchase a Study Shack card at the MJCC front desk.

Get 20 sessions for $200 and you can use the sessions as needed. One day drop-in is $12.

Study Shack at the MJCC

attention Riverdale parents: The MJCC will be continuing our busing to Riverdale program for your children next school year. Every day, the MJCC will be sending a bus over to Riverdale to pick up the children that have signed up for study shack and bring them to the JCC! Get 20 sessions complete with transportation for only $300. Most people pay $15-$20 a day just to have your child(ren) picked up from school and dropped off at home. We will help them complete their homework, give them snack, take them to and from any of our great after school enrichment activities and when all of that is done, we will take them to through a structured schedule and allow them to release all of the energy they have had bundled up since the start of the school day! All of this, for the same price it would be to have someone pick up your child and just drop them off at home. Space is limited so sign up ASAP to ensure a spot!

If you have any questions please contact Aaron Tevlowitz, [email protected] or 761-0810.
