• Since 1999-2000, the Tigers have an impressive 85-21 record (.802 winning percentage) in the month of January.

• Memphis has won 53 of its last 60 January games (.883 winning percentage).

HISTORY OF ALL-MEMPHIS STARTING FIVES(*Note: In this research, the Memphis area suburbs are included.)

Research by Matt Dillon, Tigers hoops color analyst and historian

THERE’S NO PLACE LIKE HOME • Junior Joe Jackson is afirmbeliever in that,

as he’s played rather well in the Tigers’ seven-game homestand that just wrapped up.

• In those seven contests, the 6-foot-1 guard aver-aged 15.4 points, 5.4 assists and 2.4 rebounds.

• Jacksonnetteddoublefiguresinallsevencon-tests.

• However, it’s his shooting percentages that are even better. Jackson is hitting 57.1 percent from thefield,50percentfromthearcand72.2per-cent from the free throw line.

• The Memphis, Tenn., native also dished out 38 assists compared to 20 turnovers for a near 2:1 assist-to-turnover ratio.

• The following breaks down Jackson’s last seven games:

TIGERS ‘BOUNDING THE BOARDS IN2012-13 • A lot of talk in head coach Josh Pastner’sfirst

three seasons centered about rebounding and the Tigers’ frustration in that area.

• Well, it looks as if that’s been corrected early on in the 2012-13 campaign.

• Memphis is out-rebounding its opponents by an average margin of +4.6 boards per game (36.2-31.6), which ranks third in Conference USA.

• The Tigers have won the board battle in eight of their 12 contests this season, including games with Minnesota, Ohio and Louisville.

• The following shows how the Tigers have done ontheglassinPastner’stenure(first12gamesof each season only):

D.J.’S CAREER NIGHT/PART II • Earlier this season, D.J. Stephens set career

highs on the offensive end versus Minnesota Nov. 23, scoring 15 points and hitting three treys.

• In the Tigers’ Dec. 28 game versus Oral Rob-erts, the 6-foot-5 forward put up career numbers defensively.

• Stephens posted career bests for rebounds (14) and blocked shots (5) in the win over the Golden Eagles.

Page 7: Memphis Men's Basketball Game Notes vs Tennessee - Jan. 4, 2013

• His previous career highs were 11 rebounds ver-sus Western Kentucky Dec. 4, 2010, and four blocks versus Southern Miss Feb. 12, 2011.

THE BAHAMAS AND THE AFTER • Tiger Nation may want to refer to “it” as T.B.

(through Bahamas) and A.B. (After Bahamas). • That’s the way head coach Josh Pastner and his

squad are looking at it. • Despite the 1-2 record in the Battle 4 Atlantis in

The Bahamas, Pastner and his team are taking what they learned from that tournament and us-ing those lessons to get better.

• The numbers below prove it (T.B. is through Bahamas; A.B. is after Bahamas):

T.B. Stat A.B. 44.6 FG Pct. 48.9 43.0 FG Pct. Defense 39.6 32.9 3 Pt. FG Pct. 33.0 39.4 3 Pt. FG Pct. Defense 30.7 +5.0 Rebound Margin +4.3 56-68 Assists-Turnovers 134-114

“G” - FENSE, “G” - FENSE • Junior Geron Johnson, who is called “G” by

histeammates, hasdefinitelyhelpedtheTigers’defense, and the team’s defensive numbers prove it.

• But, his individual defensive performance in Memphis’ Dec. 28 win over Oral Roberts was impressive.

• Memphis also was the only men’s basketball program in Conference USA to earn an NCAA Public Recognition Award.

• The NCAA Public Recognition Awards are based on the sports’ most-recent multi-year Ac-ademic Progress Rate (APR). This year, the top performing APR scores ranged from 978 to a perfect 1,000. The most-recent APRs are multi-year rates based on scores from the 2007-08, 2008-09, 2009-10 and 2010-11 academic years.

• In the contest, Johnson was the primary defend-er on the Golden Eagles’ leading scorer, Warren Niles.

• Niles entered the contest with a 21.3 scoring av-erage (ninth in the nation) and a 53 percent clip from the arc.

• “G” held Niles to only two points on 1-of-11 shootingfromthefieldand0-of-6fromthearc.

THE JOHNSON EFFECT • Most of the talk coming into 2012-13 was how

junior college transfer Geron Johnson was go-ing to help the Tigers offensively.

• However, while his offense will eventually come (it came in the form of a season-high 21 points versus Ohio Dec. 5), it’s Johnson’s de-fense that has helped Memphis early on.

• Johnson had to sit out the Tigers’ first threegames due to an NCAA-imposed suspension, but has seen action in the last eight contests.
