Research by Matt Dillon, Tigers hoops color analyst and historian

• In 2011-12, Memphis recorded its 14th season of double-digit victories in C-USA play with a 13-3 league record. It was also the seventh-con-secutive year the Tigers recorded double-digit wins in C-USA action.

• Before the shift in C-USA prior to the 2005-06 campaign, the Tigers were tied for the second-most, double-digit conference win seasons with seven (at the time tied with Charlotte).

program, Josh Pastner is the winningest coach in school history — for conference wins.

• With Memphis’ 36 Conference USA wins from 2009-12, Pastner is the program’s winningest head coach in terms of conference victories.

TIGERS AMONG ELITE GROUP • Memphis is among the winningest NCAA Divi-

sion I programs since 2000-01 and 2005-06, but it doesn’t end there.

• The Tigers are a part of another elite group at the NCAA Division I level.

• Memphis is one of nine programs that has won 20 or more games each of the last 10 seasons.

• The following lists the nine NCAA Division I programs that have 20 or more wins the each of the last 10 years (2002-03 to 2011-12):

JANUARY GOOD FOR TIGERS • While Memphis has had success in December

since 1999-2000 (68-29 record), January has proven to be a better month for the Tigers.

• Since 1999-2000, the Tigers have an impressive 87-21 record (.806 winning percentage) in the month of January.

• Memphis has won 55 of its last 62 January games (.887 winning percentage).

IT’S A BLOCK PARTY • It took a few games into the season, but the Ti-

gers are getting back to their “blocking” ways. • After leading C-USA in blocks a year ago at 5.6

bpg, Memphis began 2012-13 averaging only 3.9blockspercontestinthefirstsevengames(27 total blocks).

• Well, the Tigers have picked up their intensity on the defensive end in the last seven games with 49 total blocks (7.0 bpg).

• In each of the last seven games, Memphis had no fewer than four blocks, including a season-high 11 swats in the Jan. 4 win at Tennessee.

THERE’S NO PLACE LIKE THE MAINLAND • Junior Joe Jacksonisafirmbelieverinthat,as

he’s played rather well in the Tigers’ nine games since returning from The Bahamas.

• In those nine contests, the 6-foot-1 guard aver-aged 15.9 points, 5.3 assists and 2.8 rebounds.

• Jacksonnetteddoublefigures in all nine con-tests, including 20 points in the Tigers’ Jan. 4 win at Tennessee.

• For his performance versus the Volunteers, Jackson was named Conference USA Player of the Week for Dec. 31-Jan. 6.

• However, it’s his shooting percentages that are even better. Jackson is hitting 57.8 percent from thefield,52.2percentfromthearcand72.9per-cent from the free throw line.

• Niles entered the contest with a 21.3 scoring av-erage (ninth in the nation) and a 53 percent clip from the arc.

• “G” held Niles to only two points on 1-of-11 shootingfromthefieldand0-of-6fromthearc.

MEMPHIS RECEIVES NCAA PUBLICRECOGNITION AWARD FOR THIRD YEAR • For the third-straight year, the Memphis men’s

basketball team received an NCAA Public Rec-ognition Award, given to teams with APRs in the top-10 percent of their respective sports.

• Memphis was one of 13 schools in the nation to receive an NCAA Public Recognition Award and also participate in the 2012 NCAA Tourna-ment.

• Memphis also was the only men’s basketball program in Conference USA to earn an NCAA Public Recognition Award.

• The NCAA Public Recognition Awards are based on the sports’ most-recent multi-year Ac-

• The Memphis, Tenn., native also dished out 48 assists compared to 24 turnovers for a 2:1 assist-to-turnover ratio.

THE BAHAMAS AND THE AFTER • Tiger Nation may want to refer to “it” as T.B.

(through Bahamas) and A.B. (After Bahamas). • That’s the way head coach Josh Pastner and

his squad are looking at it. • Despite the 1-2 record in the Battle 4 Atlantis in

The Bahamas, Pastner and his team are taking what they learned from that tournament and us-ing those lessons to get better.

• The numbers below prove it (T.B. is through Bahamas; A.B. is after Bahamas):

T.B. Stat A.B. 44.6 FG Pct. 49.7 43.0 FG Pct. Defense 40.1 32.9 3 Pt. FG Pct. 35.6 39.4 3 Pt. FG Pct. Defense 33.6 +5.0 Rebound Margin +3.9 56-68 Assists-Turnovers 162-140

D.J.’S CAREER NIGHT/PART II • Earlier this season, D.J. Stephens set career

highs on the offensive end versus Minnesota Nov. 23, scoring 15 points and hitting three treys.

• In the Tigers’ Dec. 28 game versus Oral Rob-erts, the 6-foot-5 forward put up career numbers defensively.

• Stephens posted career bests for rebounds (14) and blocked shots (5) in the win over the Golden Eagles.

• Stephens tied his career best for blocked shots (5) in the Jan. 4 win over Tennessee.

“G” - FENSE, “G” - FENSE • Junior Geron Johnson, who is called “G” by

histeammates, hasdefinitelyhelpedtheTigers’defense, and the team’s defensive numbers prove it.

• But, his individual defensive performance in Memphis’ Dec. 28 win over Oral Roberts was impressive.

• In the contest, Johnson was the primary defend-er on the Golden Eagles’ leading scorer, Warren Niles.
