Chan won the silver medal with the team in the team event at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games. He took figure skating lessons because he wanted tolearn how to skate in order to play hockey, but then liked figure skating right away. He practiced many other sports including tennis, skiing, swimming andtaekwondo. Osborne Colson coached Chan for many years up until his death in July 2006 at age 90. Chan admires four-time World Champion KurtBrowning for his personality and admires World Champion Todd Eldredge for his work ethics. Chan's parents are immigrants from China. His motherimmigrated from Hong Kong to Canada in her late 20s, his father came as a young boy to Canada. Chan's father played ping pong and coached a pingpong team in Quebec. Chan returns to competition after taking a break in the 2014/15 season.

Ngyuen won three consecutive national titles, being the youngest athlete so far in each category: He won the Juvenile title in 2007 at age 8, the Pre-Novicetitle in 2008 and the Novice title in 2009. He became also the youngest Junior Men's Champion when taking the title in 2011 at age 12 and youngestNational Champion (senior level) in 2015, at age 16. Ngyuen's younger sister Kim is also a competitive skater. He switched coaches and moved fromVancouver to Toronto in summer 2012. Coach Brian Orser is the 1984 and 1988 Olympic silver medalist. Nguyen's father works with him off the ice.

Jin started skating at age 7 after watching a figure skating competition. He looks up to Olympic Champions Alexei Yagudin, Evgeni Plushenko and YuzuruHanyu. Brezina started skating after the 1998 Olympic Games, because he wanted to play ice hockey. His father told him that he needs to learn how to skate first,Brezina took lessons and stayed in figure skating. Skaters he looks up to are Jozef Sabovcik and Jeffrey Buttle. His sister Eliska (six years younger) iscompeting at the international level as well. He switched coaches and moved back to Germany for training in summer 2014. He withdrew from the 2014World Championships due to injury following the Short Program.

Hanyu is the first Japanese male skater to win Olympic gold. He became the first skater to surpass a total score of 300 points (322.40 points at NHK Trophy2015). Hanyu followed his older sister Saya into skating. He looks up to Johnny Weir in figure skating. Hanyu's home and ice rink were damaged during theearthquake and tsunami catastrophe on March 11, 2011 and he trained in Yokohama before the ice rink re-opened four months later. Hanyu switchedcoaches in spring 2012 and has moved to Canada for training. Coach Brian Orser is the 1984 and 1988 Olympic silver medalist.

Fernandez is the first figure skater from Spain to win the world title (2015) and to take a medal at an ISU Championship (gold at 2013 Europeans). Hochstein started practising tae kwon do as a child but switched to figure skating when he was nine years old, inspired by the performances of MichelleKwan at the 1998 Olympic Winter Games. His younger sister Veronica is a competitive skater as well.

Rippon started to skate at age 10 because his mother skated and brought him along to the rink. He did not like it at first, but eventually started to loveskating. Rippon is the oldest of six children in his family. Skaters he looks up to are Daisuke Takahashi, Alexei Yagudin, Shizuka Arakawa, Miki Ando andMichelle Kwan. He switched coaches in September 2012. Rippon also lists Denis Petrov as his coach.

Ge grew up in China as his parents were coaching there. He has been coached by his parents since childhood. Ge lived and trained in the USA for a fewyears, but has moved back to China in 2013 and trains part-time in the USA. He speaks fluently Chinese (Mandarin), Russian and English.
