About MENSafe Computing

Computer architectures with safety-critical requirements are very complex. Considerations about such systems include safety-critical characteristics, reliability questions, error behavior modes, Safety Integrity Levels (up to SIL 3 or SIL 4) and the major IEC and EN standards, e.g., EN 50129 for railways or DO-254 for avionics (up to DAL-A or DAL-B).

MTCS – Modular Train Control System

MTCS is an open and modular computer platform based on standard components. All parts can be certified according to SIL 4 and comply completely with the EN 50155 railway standard.

MTCS can be used in a train for functions such as automatic train control (ATO) und automatic train protection (ATP) as well as in switch boxes.

The heart of the Modular Train Control System is the MTCS controller, which delivers state-of-the-art computing perfor-mance based on PC technology. It can be used as a standalone and in combination with up to 63 remote I/O boxes.

The MTCS system communicates via standard real-time Ethernet and interfaces to any type of fieldbus network like MVB, CANopen, PROFINET, etc. This makes it easy to integrate into a TCN network as well as into regionally different train control systems like PTC, ETCS, CTCS, ATCS or Klub-U.

MTCS is application-ready, allowing the immediate start of the application development. It already includes pre-certified software components and SIL 4 certification bundles.

Safe boards and systems from MEN are shipped together with a certification package for the hard-ware (and, in some cases, for the software, too) that certifies SIL 4 or DAL-A suitability and includes the Assessment Report, the Safety Case, the Safety User Guide and the certificate of TÜV SÜD.

MTCS can either be used as a safe PLC under QNX or is freely programmable under “C”. The user can always add his own application, thus having complete control of the functionality of the MTCS.

The high level of modularity of MTCS results in significant cost and time savings during computerization of the train, whether for a new vehicle or during refurbishment.

About MENModular 19" CompactPCI® Systems and Rugged Box PCs

It is MEN’s goal to find the most cost-effective solution together with our customers. For many applications, it is possible to use either one of our application-ready, built-to-order standard systems in half 19" format or a modular and robust standard box PC. Network functionality is often already implemented in these devices and can be extended by using one of our standard switch, router or WAP devices.

Rugged Box PCs

CPU scalability, I/O flexibility and a robust, fanless conduction cooled enclosure are the characterizing features of this family of box computers. By using different I/O and CPU boards, these standard box PCs each have a different focus, e.g. on graphics, wireless functions, mass storage, fieldbus or Ethernet switch/router networks, while at the same time offering standard I/O such as Ethernet, USB, audio or UART interfaces. PCI Express cards, SA- Adapters and various memory cards allow customers to tailor the devices to the final application within a short time-to-market.

Panel PCsDesigned to operate in harsh environments, MEN panel PCs withstand up to -40 to +70°C (+85°C) operating temperature, shock, vibration, drop, resonance, humidity, chemicals, etc.

They are either developed according to RTCA DO-254, EN 50129 or IEC 61508 and often comply with standards like EN 50155 for railways or with the automotive E-mark. They are available up to 10 years and more, thanks to MEN’s superior obsolescence management.

Product offering starts with the board-level electronics, which can turn into a fully customized design or be a standard device.

CompactPCI® / Serial – Board Level

Today’s users appreciate the modularity and robustness of CompactPCI®. Based on this established standard, CompactPCI® Serial offers fast serial data transfer with CompactPCI® PlusIO as the migration path between the two.

The front-panel layout as well as the uniform pin-out and placement of its extension card connectors make all PICMG 2.0 and 2.30 CPU boards compatible with all successor boards. CompactPCI® PlusIO forms the migration path to CompactPCI® Serial, allowing users to build hybrid systems.

About MENComputer-on-ModulesDesigned to operate in harsh environments, all MEN COMs withstand up to -40 to +85°C operating temperature, shock, vibration, drop, resonance, humidity, chemicals, etc. They are designed to comply with standards like EN 50155 for railways or with the automotive E-mark when integrated in the final system. MEN products are available up to 10 years and more, thanks to MEN’s superior obsolescence management.

Based on our experience with ultra-rugged ESMexpress and ESMini COMs, MEN has driven the standardization of Rugged COM Express. Rugged COM Express is based on the well-known and wide-spread PICMG COM.0 (COM Express) specification. Defined with VITA 59, a mechanical specification has been added for conduction cooling of the electronics, using a frame and cover to embed them inside a closed housing.
