MENDEL SQUARE in Brno

NE W OLD SQUAREMendel Square in Brno is an urban area that was damaged at the turn of the 60s and 70s of the 20th century. The proposal leaves room for urban structures to grow on Mendel Square. It creates parceling on which the city can grow, a place for the buildings which will once again de�ne the streets and squares.

Site conditions:

Solved area of Mendel square with an area of approximately 4.52 hectares is located in the historic center of Old Brno. From the north it is de�ned by Augustinian monastery complex, Basilica of the Assumption of Our Lady and the Starobrno Brewery premises. Southern and eastern boundary lines are created of classical style buildings. On these eastern and southern boundaries lies intensively used city communication. On the west side of the territory are located high-rise panel houses and extensively conceived Veletržní street.The present form of the Mendel square is marked by incomplete and insensitive urban interventions from the 60-ies of the 20th century. The area is directly linked with the brewery, monastery, St. Anna University Hospital and block of high school. Mendel square is one of the primary public transportation node. A close vicinity to the Poříčí city ring road makes the area signi�cantly burdened by individual car transport.

Idea:

1 Completion of existing Blocks and closure of vacant sites. 2 Creation of new Blocks.

Public transportation:

1 Tram loop is removed from the area of the square thanks to the extension of Ypsilantiho street.

2 Tram line is straightened through the square.

3 New Blocks will de�ne public spaces between (streets and Squares ) them.

3 Transfer of bus and trolley node into the space before the brewery, observing the time required to transfer about 2 min (range of public transport connections is 5-10 min ).
