introduced . With the help of, Ron presented an impressive video on the history,
mission and many activities of the Bakersfield Department. Ronjoined the department in October 1985 and was appointed chief inMay 1998. The department was founded 130 years ago this month.Colonel Baker set up a fire fighting unit in 1868 with buckets in awagon. In 1877 65 high level citizens donated $3000 to start thedepartment formally on May 13. A formal celebration will be held inOctober to coincide with Fire Prevention Week.
An engine that cost $2500 in 1877 today runs $450,000. Thefirst ladder truck from Bakersfield, a horse-drawn wagon with woodwheels built by the Amish, was found in San Bernardino Countyand has been returned to Bakersfield. It is being restored at StationOne. That ladder truck cost about $4500 and today a ladder truckgoes for $750,000. Chester Avenue is wide as a fire preventionmeasure, because city fathers did not want fire

Officersto cross the street., came to Bakersfield from Alameda in 1907
to retire and open a plumbing business. When the City firefightersresigned in a dispute with the City Trustees, Max was appointedchief. Ron was wearing a solid gold badge with four colors and asmall diamond that was crafted by the American Jewelry Companyin 1910 for $700. When Max died in 1946 his wife donated thebadge to the Bakersfield Fire Department, and it is worn by eachchief for important occasions.
The Fire Department’s FY 2007-08 budget is $32 million. Themission of the department is “to protect life, property, and theenvironment from harm through education and prevention, emer-gency response, planning and training, etc.”. Last year the depart-ment responded to 25,973 calls with 36,000 apparatus respondingcode 3. Working fires 408 and 14,678 EMS calls last year. Thedepartment operates 13 fire stations and 3 taskforce stations. Totalstaff, sworn and support, numbers 225 with 180 of those sworn.
Two new fire stations are being built. Station 5 is 50 years oldand is being relocated to South Union and East White Lane. A newStation 14 is planned to be built at Mountain Vista and Harris in theGreystone Park. A fire station complements a park because itbrings safety and a buffer.
Ron noted that “when you don’t know whom to call, call the FireDepartment.” Their operations extend to rescue, fire code enforce-ment, environmental services, hazardous materials, fire safetyeducation, and now especially disaster preparedness. Disasterpreparation work has been extensive in recent years because of allthe toxic materials that travel through Bakersfield on I-5, Hwys. 99and 58. His trucks carry antidotes to 100,000 toxic pharma-ceuticals or “bad stuff.” In a major disaster families and residentsneed to be prepared for a 72 hour delay in help arriving and pre-pare for it; the department provides neighborhood training. Thedepartment has a reverse 911 which allows them to call all resi-dences in a specific area and leave messages on their homemachines about a disaster and safety measures.
The Fire Captain and Engineers dressed in theturnout equipment that weighs 30 pounds and costs about $7000to $8000 per unit. Ron proudly concluded with the department’ssimple mantra: “BE NICE; DON’T JUDGE; SERVICE FIRST”.
