When Zoe Oskarsson was looking for a project to under-take as part of her Girl Scout Gold Award project, she wentback to school Riverside Elementary School, to be exact.

Oskarsson explained that the Gold Award involves a proj-ect that makes a change for t he better. When trying to decideon a project, Oskarsson looked to the school where she wasstudent several years earlier.

I wanted to help them out with the playground,Oskarsson said.

She then explained that the playground surface wasrecently repaved, and the markings for various playgroundgames were missing.Oskarsson said that when she talked withteachers at the schools, the markings for the games is whatthey wanted the most. After surveying teachers, Oskarssonsaid then talked with school Principal Scott Walter to deter-mine where they wanted the markings on t he surface.

Now Im coming back here for my project and I hired apaint crew and I have some volunteers here, she said.

Ken Roberts of Professional Pavement Painting Inc. said hewas contacted by Zoe Oskarsson about the project. Robertsasked for $500 to cover the cost of his work. Additional fundsraised by Oskarsson will go toward playground equipment.

Were making it more of an event, rather than a job. Were having fun, Roberts said.

He noted that volunteers are painting a map of theUnited States on the playground while other family membersshowed up for the afternoon to offer support. PauletteOskarsson, Zoes mom, added that Roberts did twice as muchwork than originally anticipated because the teachers wish

    list was larger than anticipated.

He just keeps donating, its fantastic what hes done,Paulette Oskarsson said.

The work done by volunteers included painting a map ofthe continental United States, with several different colorsdividing the states, which was done by t he volunteers.

Oskarsson said a fund raiser was held to cover the paintcrew, with fund raisers including a movie night and a grand-parents and special friends day in which grandparents donat-ed to the project. A brat fry also played a part in raising fundsfor the project.

Menomonee Falls High School studentsred well on the ACT test, according to fig-es recently released by the stateepartment of Public Instruction.

The ACT is a college-prep test measuringudents preparedness and performance inur categories: English, math, reading andience. Many colleges use ACT scores in

dmission requirements, and many organiza-ons use the scores in awarding scholarships.e highest attainable score is a 36.

According to information from the Schoolstrict of Menomonee Falls, 277 studentsok the ACT and achieved a score of 23.3.total of 71.4 students in the class of 2013ok the test.

When compared with past district resultsted on the state Department of Publicstruction web site, the 23.3 composite scorethe second highest among Menomonee

alls district students since the 1995-96hool year, and exceeded only by the 23.5ore from students in the class of 2005.

The number of students who took the testthe third highest since 1995-96, exceeded

nly by 286 students who took the test in

2011-12 and the 278 students who took thetest in 2010-11.

The percentage of students who took thetest is four-highest since records that go backto 1995-96, when 77.9 percent of students inthat class took the exam. In recent years, 71.8percent of students took the test in 2010-11while 73.1 percent students took the examlast year.

In a statement, district officials noted thatit is the sixth time in the last decade the dis-

tricts composite score has reached 23.0 orbetter. Falls officials noted that Falls growthhas continued while the state composite scoreremained flat at 22.1, equaling last yearsscore.

"We are thrilled by the ACT results. Ourstaff and students have been working tireless-ly toward this end for several years," saidHigh School Principal Corey Golla said in astatement issued by the district. "To see thatwork start producing results for students willbe inspiring as we continue the journey thisyear. This combined with our AP results illus-trates that the bar has been raised."

During her report at the Aug. 26 School

Board meeting, Superintendent PatriciaGreco mentioned the ACT results along withthe district's performance on the AdvancedPlacement (AP) test, which were taken by362 students, a record for Menomonee Fallsand up from more than 100 students the pre-vious year. Of the Falls students taking thetest, 80 percent scored 3 or higher on a 1-5scale. On the AP test, a 3 indicates collegereadiness and in some instances will earn astudent college credit.

In Wisconsin, 46,574 students took theACT for the class that graduated last springwhile the composite score of Wisconsin stu-dents was 22.1. Wisconsin tied with Iowa forthe second highest scores in the nation.

"Our 2013 graduates performed well onthe ACT college admissions exam," StateSuperintendent Tony Evers said in a state-ment. "We have work to do to get students to
