2010-11 RMU Basketball NEC Champions: 1982, 1983, 1989, 1990, 1992, 2009, 2010

When it came time for Robert Morris University Director of AthleticsCraig Coleman, M.D., to name a new head coach for the men’s basketballprogram, he didn’t have to look far.

Andrew Toole was introduced as the eighth head coach in the 35-yearDivision I history at a press conference at the Charles L. Sewall Center May11, 2010, and the 2011-12 campaign marks his second season as head coachof the Colonials. He owns an overall record of 22-16 (.579).

Anyone familiar with the success RMU has had in recent seasons should be familiar with Toole.Named as former head coach Mike Rice’s top assistant in 2007-08, Toole spent the 2008-09 and 2009-10 seasons as Associate Head Coach at Robert Morris. In his first season at the helm in 2010-11, Toole continued RMU’s recent run of success, leading theColonials to an overall record of 18-14 (.563), including a mark of the 12-6 (.667) in the Northeast Con-ference. Robert Morris advanced to its third straight NEC Tournament championship game, falling shyof earning its third consecutive title before falling in overtime to Long Island, 85-82. Despite a roster that features just one senior for the second straight year, Toole will lead a programin 2011-12 that is looking for its third NEC Tournament championship in four years, a feat that has beenaccomplished only once in league history. The Colonials won the 1989, 1990 and 1992 NEC Tournamentcrowns. “Our players are not old, but they should have an understanding of what it takes to win,” Toole said.“Let’s take the last 10 or 12 games of last year and now mesh the new guys in and keep going in the rightdirection.” Toole is at the helm of an RMU program that has experienced unprecedented success over the lastfive years. The Colonials own NEC records for victories over the span of two, three, four and five years. Since the beginning of the 2006-07 season, Robert Morris owns an overall record of 108-56 (.659),with the 108 victories both a school and NEC record for a five-year span. Since Toole joined the staff in2007-08, the Colonials have posted an overall record of 91-45 (.669). While RMU’s overall success is apparent, the program’s accomplishments in the NEC are also clear. Over the last four years, the Colonials have posted a mark of 58-14 (.806) against league oppositionand enter the 2011-12 season having finished no lower than third over that span. Robert Morris won outright NEC regular-season titles in 2008 and 2009 and shared the champi-onship in 2010 with Quinnipiac with Toole as a member of the staff. RMU followed up its success in the regular season by becoming the first team in NEC history in 16years to win back-to-back NEC Tournament championships by earning a 52-50 win over Quinnipiac inthe 2010 NEC Tournament championship game in Hamden, Conn. In 2008, the Colonials made their first appearance in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT),dropping an 87-81 decision to No. 1 overall seed Syracuse at the Carrier Dome. In both 2009 and 2010,RMU earned automatic berths to the NCAA Tournament thanks to winning their sixth and seventh NECTournament championships, respectively. In the 2009 NCAA Tournament as a No. 15 seed, the Colonials fell to eventual national runner-upMichigan State, 77-62, in the first round at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minn.In the 2010 NCAA Tournament, Robert Morris nearly upset No. 2 seed Villanova in the first round at theDunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, R.I., before falling, 73-70, in overtime. At 31 years old, Toole is the youngest head coach at the Division I level. Prior to coming to Robert Morris in 2007, Toole spent the 2006-07 season as an assistant at LafayetteCollege in Easton, Pa. While an assistant with the Leopards, Toole assisted in all facets of the program, from recruiting toplayer development. He was responsible for helping recruit student-athletes that helped lead Lafayetteto the 2010 Patriot League Tournament championship game against Lehigh. Between 2004 and 2006, Toole spent two years with The Hoop Group in Neptune, N.J. He served asthe director of the Eastern Invitational Basketball Clinic, where he handled logistical management forthe nation's largest high school exposure camp. Toole was a four-year starter at the Division I level, playing for Elon University (1998-2000) beforetransferring to the University of Pennsylvania (2000-03). Over his four-year career at Elon and Penn, Toole averaged 12.3 points per contest, finishing with1,341 points in 109 games. He also posted averages of 3.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.2 steals per contest.Toole, who married the former Brooke Kelly June 3, 2011, resides in the Pittsburgh suburb of Mt.Lebanon, Pa.

In a 51-44 victory over La Salle(11/25/11), the Colonials visited the charity stripe 34 times, converting 23 (67.6 percent).RMU has now won 32 consecutive games when visiting the charity stripe at least 30times in a game. The last loss for the Robert Morris came in the 2002 Northeast Confer-ence Tournament, when the Colonials suffered an 85-76 loss to UMBC (3/1/02) despitegoing 24-for-31 (77.4 percent) at the chalk. Through its first six games of the 2011-12campaign, RMU is averaging 26 free-throw attempts per contest.

A Gamer - Redshirt junior forward Russell Johnson seems to be settling in for RobertMorris at just the right time. Despite battling foul trouble in the 2011-12 season openeragainst Rider (11/11/11), Johnson has picked up his game. In RMU’s recently completedfive-game road swing, Johnson averaged 11.8 points and 6.6 rebounds per game whileshooting 47.6 percent (20-for-42) from the field, including 53.8 percent (7-for-13) fromlong range. He also added 11 assists, four blocks and four steals over that stretch. Theprogram’s active leading rebounder with 424 career caroms, Johnson needs to averagejust 3.0 rebounds in RMU’s final 25 regular-season games to become the 16th player inschool history to join the 500-rebound club.

Mr. Jones - Notes on Velton Jones’ 38-point performance in an 82-77 victory @ JamesMadison (11/22/11) ... The 38 points is tied for the fourth highest single-game total inschool history with former guard Gene Nabors (1995-2000), who finished with 38 in a72-52 win over Saint Francis (Pa.) (3/3/00) in the quarterfinals of the 2000 NortheastConference Tournament ... Four of RMU’s top five scoring games in school history havecome away from the Charles L. Sewall Center ... Jones scored 20 points in the first halfagainst the Dukes, becoming the first Colonial to score at least 20 points in a half sinceformer Colonial A.J. Jackson (2003-08) finished with 21 in the first half en route to a 39-point performance in an 89-77 win over Quinnipiac (2/12/06) ... Jones converted 15 freethrows against the Dukes, a career high and tied for the second highest single-gametotal in school history.

The Race Heats Up - Thanks to a career-high 38 points in an 82-77 victory @ James Madi-son (11/22/11), redshirt junior guard Velton Jones has a chance to become the first playerat Robert Morris to eclipse the 1,000-point plateau since former Colonial guard JeremyChappell (2005-09) turned the trick during the 2007-08 campaign. Jones enters Thurs-day’s game against Fairleigh Dickinson as the program’s active leading scorer with 775career points and would need to average 9.0 points over RMU’s final 25 regular-seasoncontests to become the 20th player in school history to reach 1,000 career points.

Streaker - Redshirt junior guard Velton Jones enters Thursday’s game against FairleighDickinson having reached double figures in scoring in each of his last 12 games datingback to last season, the longest active streak by a Colonial. Over that span Jones is aver-aging 17.3 points per contest. It’s the longest streak since former guard Tony Lee (2004-08) closed out his career with 12 straight double-figure scoring games.

Board Games - A big key to the success that Robert Morris has had over the last four sea-sons has been due in large part to the program’s ability to crash the boards. Since thebeginning of the 2007-08 campaign, Robert Morris owns a record of 72-11 (.867) whenthe Colonials are even or better in rebounding in a game, including a 69-9 (.885) markwhen outrebounding their opponent. In Andrew Toole’s two seasons as head coach, RMUhas posted a record of 17-5 (.773) when outrebounding its opponent.

Jones and Johnson have each appeared in 73 consecutive games forRMU, the longest active streak, while junior forward Lijah Thompson is next, having ap-peared in 50 consecutive games.

Defense Wins Championships - At the heart of the resurgence of the RMU basketballprogram over the last five seasons has been defense. Even with second-year head coachAndrew Toole on the sidelines, RMU’s attention to detail on defense hasn’t changed.Robert Morris improved to 69-13 (.841) since the beginning of the 2007-08 campaignwhen holding its opponent to 70 points or less thanks to a 51-44 win over La Salle(11/25/11), including a mark of 18-7 ( .720) under Toole.

Streak Snapped - One of the longest streaks in school history at Robert Morris wassnapped in a 51-44 win over La Salle (11/25/11) as part of the 2011 Philly Hoop GroupClassic. The Colonials finished 0-for-6 from beyond the arc against the Explorers, snap-ping a streak of 532 consecutive games in which RMU hit at least one three-pointer in agame. Coincidentally, RMU also finished 0-for-6 from downtown the last time it failedto hit a three-pointer but also won, posting an 84-66 victory over Long Island (2/20/93)at the Charles L. Sewall Center.

Steal City - The defensive pressure Robert Morris has turned up in its 4-2 start to the2011-12 campaign shouldn’t come as a surprise. In two seasons under head coach Andrew Toole, RMU owns a record7-3 (.700) when finishing with at least 10 steals in a game.

A Fresh Start - Robert Morris certainly wouldn’t be off to a 4-2 start without the contri-butions its received on the glass from its 2011-12 freshman class. Through the first sixgames, RMU’s four active freshmen have combined for 66 of the squad’s 219 rebounds(30.1%). The Charles L. Sewall Center

Robert Morris celebrated its 25th season of playing its home games at theCharles L. Sewall Center in 2009-10. The facility was dedicated in 1985 andnamed for the man who served Robert Morris as president from 1967 until 1989.

The Sewall Center has been the site where the Northeast Conference Tourna-ment champion has been crowned in men’s basketball a total of five times in thelast 26 years, with the Colonials winning four of those titles. RMU won the NECTournament on its home court in 1989, 1990, 1992 and 2009, while in 1986 No.2 seed Marist won the championship with a 57-56 win over No. 1 seed FairleighDickinson.

The 2009 NEC Tournament men's basketball championship game held at the Se-wall Center featured the first sell-out crowd in school history, with 3,227 fanspacked into the arena to watch Robert Morris post a 48-46 win over Mount St.Mary’s that was televised nationally on ESPN2. Former forward Dallas Green(2006-10) hit the game-winning shot with 2.2 seconds to play to help lift theColonials to their sixth NEC Tournament title. In addition, the Robert Morriswomen’s basketball team claimed back-to-back NEC Tournament champi-onships at the Sewall Center in 2007 and 2008.

In 2010-11, guard Karon Abraham paced Robert Morris by draining 59 three-pointers, while redshirtfreshman guard Coron Williams finished with 48. As a club, the Colonials finished fourth inthe NEC in 2010-11 with an average of 6.72 per game. A breakdown of the NEC’s top five teamsin three-pointers made since the 2001-02 campaign ...
