Welcome...

At Tiffin University, our students endeavour to excel in both the classroom and the athletic arena. Our athletic programs have enjoyed tremendous success in recent years with conference championships, teams being nationally ranked and challenging at national tournaments. There have been numerous individual accolades including All-Americans, and it is no small accomplishment that in the past few years we have set new standards of excellence with our individual and team academic achievements. We expect our student-athletes to be just as successful in the classroom. A recent self study conducted by the university indicated that, of all the athletes who completed their eligibility at Tiffin University in the last five years, 95% of those athletes graduated. While many colleges would be ecstatic with these results, we will never be content until it is 100%. We are proud of our rich history and look forward to setting new milestones as we enter the NCAA Division II playing field and the highly competitive Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. We are proud of our athletes and what they have accomplished. They have been the force behind the winning tradition that has been established, and I am confident the future will also be highly successful for Tiffin University athletics.

- Lonny Allen Athletic Director

Welcome to this athletic season at Tiffin University. I invite you to watch and cheer for all of our women’s and men’s teams. Intercollegiate athletics play an important role at Tiffin University. The students who participate develop life-long friendships and learn leadership and teamwork skills, how to set goals and work hard to achieve those goals, how to deal with adversity, the importance of persistence, sportsmanship, and physical fitness, and other skills and abilities that contribute to satisfying and productive lives and careers. Our athletic program also provides visibility and name recognition for TU, helps develop a sense of excitement, morale and school spirit on campus, and provides opportunities for students, employees, alumni, and supporters to unite behind a common goal. We are especially proud of the high standards of conduct displayed by our coaches and players on and off the field.

John Hill enters his first year as Head Men’s Basketball Coach at Tiffin University, taking over for departing coach Rodney Martin. He will also serve as Associate Vice President for Development.

“This presents an opportunity for me to follow my passion and love of basketball,” Hill, who has served as Athletic Director and Associate Vice President for Development at Shenandoah University in Virginia since 2002, said. “I am coming back to my home town, my community, my family and friends. Tiffin is a great place to live, a great town with two great universities. It allows me to take a step up in the coaching world by leading an up and coming Division II program.”

Hill, a member of both the Tiffin Columbian and Heidelberg University Athletic Halls of Fame, came to Shenandoah after a 27 year career as the Athletic Director and Head Men’s Basketball Coach at Heidelberg College.

During those years, Hill won a school record 357 games. He also served at different times as head men’s tennis coach, head men’s cross country coach, head men’s golf coach and chair of the health, physical education and athletic training department.

Hill has had many accolades over his head coaching career. One of the highlights came in 1983-84, when Heidelberg qualified for the NCAA Tournament with a record of 24-7, 10-3 in the OAC, marking the first team at Heidelberg to eclipse 20 wins. In all, Hill coached Heidelberg basketball teams to five OAC runner-up finishes and two NCAA appearances.

Under Hill’s direction, the Shenandoah athletic department experienced unparalleled success. The football team won USA South Conference championships in both 2003 and 2004, the men’s basketball team won a school record 10 USA South Conference games in 2003-04 and the women’s lacrosse team played in the 2004 USA South Conference Tournament championship game.

Hill has also served as President of the Ohio Athletic Conference, Chair of the OAC’s Director’s of Athletics, a member of the NCAA Division III Regional Basketball Selection Committee, the NCAA National Women’s Soccer Committee and the NABC Ranking Committee.

In addition to his undergraduate work at Heidelberg, Hill earned a master’s degree from SUNY-Buffalo and an Education Specialist degree from Bowling Green State University. In addition to doctoral work at the United States Sports Academy, Hill has both Level I and Level III certification from the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA).

Coach Hill and his wife Maryl have five children - Nate, Carrie, Jason, Bryan, and Brittany - and four grandsons - Jaylen, Brady, Greyson, and Camden.

“This year we will feature a new look and new attitude. We are moving in a new direction.”

Assistant Coach Jerry Buccilla Jerry Buccilla enters his first season with the Tiffin University men’s basketball program as the Associate Head Men’s Basketball Coach. Prior to joining the Dragons basketball staff, Coach Buccilla was the Head Boy’s Basketball Coach at Fisher Catholic High School in Lancaster, Ohio. Coach Buccilla’s 2008-09 team was co-champions of the Mid State League Cardinal Division, finishing with a league record of 12 – 2 and an overall record of 15 - 7. Coach Buccilla was recognized as the Mid State League Cardinal Division Coach of the Year for the 2008-09 season. Prior to coaching at Fisher Catholic, Coach Buccilla served as Assistant Varsity Boy’s Basketball Coach at Thomas Worthington High School in Worthington, Ohio and was the Head Women’s Basketball Coach at Heidelberg College, his alma mater. During his playing days at Heidelberg College, Coach Buccilla garnered many honors, including All Ohio Athletic Conference citations for three seasons, AC Three Years; the Mike Gregory Award

Winner honoring the OAC Player of the Year, First Team Great Lakes Region, and NCAA Division III National Tournament East Regional MVP. He was inducted to the Heidelberg College Hall of Fame in 1999, while his 1983-84 Team was inducted in the Heidelberg Hall of Fame in 2008. Coach Buccilla follows a simple philosophy in coaching and life. “We have a saying, a strong belief that in basketball just like in life you must strive to do things right, “All the Time”. When a player does not take care of their business, when they do not strive to do things right, “All the Time”, they are setting themselves up and their team up for failure. Therefore, it is not good enough, not acceptable for players to strive to do things right just when they feel like it, or just when it may mean something to them, or just when the coach is watching or just when they are in the spotlight. Rather all players must work to do things right in practices and in games, “All the Time”. Players must sprint the floor, “All the Time”. Players must be in proper defensive position, “All the Time”. Players must be strong with the basketball, “All the Time”. Players must box out, “All the Time”, and so on. While we realize that mistakes will inevitably be made in the game of basketball as with life, we strongly believe that if each player is consistently striving to do things right, “All the Time”, then personal and team success will inevitably be achieved!” Coach Buccilla and his wife Lisa have five children - Kyla, Kassy, Brianna, Gino, and Helena.

Tiffin University enters its second season as a member of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Tiffin University is the league’s 14th full member and sponsors 18 of the GLIAC’s 20 championship sports. Located in on a 110-acre campus in Tiffin, Ohio, Tiffin University was founded in 1888 and is entering its 11th year of NCAA Division II status. Tiffin is the third institution from the state of Ohio to join the GLIAC. Ashland University, located in Ashland, Ohio, joined the league on July 1, 1995. The University of Findlay, in Findlay, Ohio, began competing in the league on July 1, 1997.

The GLIAC’s members in Michigan include: Ferris State University, Grand Valley State University, Hillsdale College, Lake Superior State University, Michigan Technological University, Northern Michigan University, Northwood University, Saginaw Valley State University, and Wayne State University. The University of Indianapolis competes as an associate member in the GLIAC in football and men’s and women’s swimming & diving.

The Gillmor Student Center has been the home arena for Tiffin University basketball since the 1988-89 season - and, like the saying goes, there’s no place like home. Since the basketball team began playing its games in the Gillmor Center, the Dragons have compiled an overall record of 175 wins and 109 losses. In the 20-year history of the center, TU has only had eight losing seasons on the floor. The Dragons have a winning percentage of .616 in the Gillmor Center, including a 72-12 record between 1988-1993. In addition to the main auditorium, the building also contains over 17 offices, shower and locker rooms, a training room, a bookstore, a media conference room, a Student Activities room, the Student Affairs offices, the Channel 10 broadcast center, the Tiffin University Hall of Fame, and Trophy Gallery. A complete renovation of the Gillmor Center was recently completed. The Dining Commons, the Osceola Theater, a student lounge, expanded recreation room, numerous new offices, and expanded parking areas are just a few of the new renovations. The complex nearly tripled in size and has grown to service even more of the Tiffin University community.
