3.4 SENTENCES – CAPITAL LETTERS

Last week you learnt that names and places need capital letters. This week you will learn about another two times we use capital letters. Firstly, every time you start a new sentence you should use a capital letter. You will notice that every sentence on this page so far starts with a capital letter! After every full stop, you should write a capital letter. You should even use capital letters after question marks or exclamation marks. Just don’t use it after a comma as that is not the start of a new sentence. Write the words in the correct order to form a sentence.

1. made in the points game. basketball Paul nine

2. bad a Sarah hand. on cut her has

3. drink. hot tea too to This is

Joe and the Magic Genie By Joyce Furstenau

1 Joe Jameson found an old jar under the bridge near his house. He put the jar in his jacket pocket and played soldier with his little men. Later, he heard his mother calling him for supper, and so he ran home. 2 Joe forgot about the jar until it was time to go to bed. He took the jar from his jacket and tried to see what might have been in it before the jar had been thrown out. Was it juice? Was it jelly? Joe began wiping the dirt from the jar when a jet of smoke rose up and out of the mouth of the jar. A giant genie appeared. The genie was dressed in fancy orange pyjamas. He spoke in a very deep, but quiet voice. 3 "Thank you, Joe. I have been in that ginger jar for the past nine hundred years waiting for someone to find me and let me out," said the genie. 4 Joe's jaw fell. His eyes bulged. He jumped up and down on his bed and pinched himself. Joe asked the genie, "Are you really a genie, or is this just my imagination?" 5 The genie laughed deeply. He told Joe he was not dreaming. The genie told Joe he would grant him one very special wish for letting him out of the ginger jar. There was one hitch however: Joe's wish would come true for just one day. 6 Joe spent a long time thinking about his one wish. He thought about the many wishes he could make. Joe thought about wishing for money. But money would just be gone the next day. Joe thought about wishing for lots of toys. But he would only be able to play with the toys for one day. If he wished for a big house and a lot of friends, he would just have them for one short day. 7 Joe thought about wishing for a trip around the world. Then he realised he would not be able to enjoy a journey like that in one day. Joe finally asked the genie for a suggestion. The genie told Joe he could not give him advice. The genie repeated, "One wish for one day." 8 Joe spent several hours thinking about wishes. Finally, Joe made a decision. He said aloud, "I wish I could have a new wish come true every day for the rest of my life." 9 POOF! The genie and the ginger jar were gone. Joe was left alone. There was no magic sand left behind, no broken pieces of the ginger jar. There was no trace of the genie. Joe was upset. His face puckered up as if he were about to cry. But Joe thought about his wish. He would have to wait until tomorrow. He would make a new wish to see if the genie was telling the truth.

TERM 2 94

10 Joe went to sleep, hopeful that a new wish would be granted in the morning. He put on his pyjamas and slept soundly. 11 In the morning, Joe got up. He looked at himself in the mirror and said, "I sure wish I didn't have to get up today." POOF! Joe was back in bed. He remembered the genie's promise, but it was too late. No matter what he did, he could not get out of bed all day. Joe would have to wait until the next day to make a better wish. 12 Joe stayed in bed and went to sleep, even though he wasn't very tired. When he woke up the next day, he thought carefully about his one wish for the day. Finally, Joe made a wish. "I wish to be happy, just for today." There was no "POOF!" this time, but Joe was happy all day. No matter what happened all day long, Joe was happy. He had such a great day that he wished for the same thing the next day and the next. 13 From that day on, Joe lived a happy and wonderful life, and he never ran out of wishes.

Reading Comprehension 1. Where did Joe find the jar?

He found the jar under the bridge. He found the jar in the garden. He found the jar under a tree. He found the jar in a cave.

2. Why did Joe rub the jar? He wanted to rub off the jam. He wanted to rub off the dirt. He wanted to rub off the jelly. He wanted to rub off the label.

3. What was the "hitch" to the wish Joe got from the genie?

It would only last one year. It would only last one week. It would only last one month. It would only last one day.

4. What did Joe finally wish for? That he could have lots of friends

every day of his life. That he could have lots of money

every day of his life. That he could travel the world every

day of his life. That he could have one wish come true

every day of his life.

5. How did Joe know his wish had come true? He could not make another wish after

he wished he wouldn't have to get up. He could not get out of bed after he

wished he wouldn't have to get up. He could not comb his hair after he

wished he wouldn't have to get up. He could not see the genie after he

wished he wouldn't have to get up.
