Concentration: the ability to give something our undivided attention to the exclusion of other distractions.
S2 Squash Psychology:
Introduction to Goal Setting in Squash
What is Goal Setting?
Goal setting is a mental training technique that can be used to increase an individual’s commitment towards achieving a personal goal and this can be separated into short, medium and long term goals.
What types of goals are there? These goals can be broken down into three categories:
● Outcome goals● Performance goals● Process goals
Outcome goals deal with specific results in competition.
Performance goals deal with helping an athlete make improvements over a period of time.
Process goals are the aspects a competitor should be concentrating on when carrying out a specific skill.
This SMART acronym aims to break down five key aspects to achieving goals. This is to help ensure all areas are focused on the individual making them effective - some simple examples are:
● Specific – I will attend 4 squads per week● Measurable – I will write this down in my training
diary● Attainable – I believe I can manage this while
balancing my school commitments● Relevant – This will make me a better squash
player● Time bound – I will keep this attendance
throughout Phase 3
