Welcome Letter

Dear Mentoring Candidate

One of the many benefits of my time on the ACNEM Board is getting to know and interact with many of my colleagues throughout Australia and New Zealand. I have greatly benefited over my years spent in the field of nutritional and environmental medicine gaining knowledge from others and hope others can gain the same valuable insight from this mentoring program. I am very pleased that the ACNEM Board has initiated the ACNEM Mentoring Program.

The purpose of the ACNEM Mentoring Program is to help colleagues grow in their clinical practice by developing relationships with established members of ACNEM to gain experience and knowledge in the field of Nutritional and Environmental Medicine.

The Mentors that have kindly agreed to be involved in this exciting new initiative are more than willing to give back some of their time to this important area of medicine.

This will be an excellent program and the ACNEM Board is committed to ensuring that we build a strong knowledge base and clinical expertise among our members to enable a greater awareness, skill level, confidence and commitment to our patients, the community, other health care professionals and other stakeholders.

Therefore, on behalf of the ACNEM Board, I encourage you to sign up today!

Regards

Dr Christabelle YeohPresident

Mentoring Guidelines

Definition of a Mentor

A Mentoring Program or Mentorship is a relationship in which a more experienced or more knowledgeable person (Mentor) helps to guide a less experienced or less knowledgeable person (Mentee). The Mentor may be older or younger than the person being mentored, but they must have a certain area of expertise. In our case, all Mentors will be Fellows of ACNEM. Mentors have the ability to lead, inspire and motivate the Mentees by expanding their knowledge base, awareness, insight and perspective. It is becoming an increasingly popular way of providing guidance and support and is very common in many business, academic, research and clinical sectors for mentoring programs to exist. In summary, it is a great learning and development partnership between someone with vast experience and someone who wants to learn.

ACNEM Mentoring Program Objectives

The goal of the ACNEM Mentoring Program is to provide a pathway for ACNEM members or those who have completed the ACNEM Primary Modules to learn about how to get started and integrate nutritional and environmental medicine into their professional practice. It is designed to give ACNEM members a set of tools and ideas that they can use to build on to gain the necessary experience and confidence to practise Nutritional and Environmental Medicine. This program is also designed to provide support for the more experienced practitioner who would like to benefit from a Mentor in specialist areas or complex cases.

How the ACNEM Mentoring Program Works

The ACNEM Mentoring Program is a group program. There will be one Mentor for a group of up to four Mentees. Mentors and Mentees will meet for an hour every two weeks for six sessions over a three-month period. It is envisaged that there will be three Mentoring Programs run in each calendar year. All sessions will be conducted by the use of Skype technology. Meeting times will be scheduled in advance at a specific time and day each fortnight. Sessions will not be able to be changed because of someone’s inability to attend.
