We use a special recipe to create a waffle that’s crisp on the outside while light and airy inside!

An ancient legend tells of a great Belgian King whose love for fine food was exceeded only by his adoration of his beautiful daughter. All the kings of Europe and all the Eastern potentates pleaded for her hand, bringing gifts of dazzling jewels and worldly treasures to help press their courtship. But the King of Belgian could not bring himself to give the lovely princess to any man.

Then one day, a Belgian chef appeared at court and presented the King with a fantastic new delicacy which he called a Belgian Waffle! Crispy, golden outside, fluffy, buttery and delicate inside...it was quite the most delecta-ble pastry his Royal Highness had ever tasted.

The King offered the stranger dazzling jewels and worldly treasures in return for the secret recipe of his incredible Belgian Waffle. But to no avail. The chef would reveal nothing unless the King finally offered him the princess’ hand in marriage.

And that, dear friends, is how the Belgian Waffle (just like the ones we can serve you here) turned a chef into a prince and gave the whole world a dish fit for a King!

The origin of the name Newport News is traditionally believed to come from the fact that on the voyages of Captain Christopher Newport, between England and Jamestown, along with provisions, Captain Newport also returned with “Newes.”

Actually, the name Newport News originated 100 years earlier on the original voyage of Christopher Columbus. During his journey to the New World his navigator was a Greek sailor whose name was also Chris. In order not to confuse the two Chris’s, the navigator was referred to as Chris Two.

Besides navigator, Chris Two was also the ship’s cook. It seems that Chris Two was a

much better cook than navigator and before long, Columbus’ ships were lost.

Running low on food and water, Columbus went to his navigator and ordered him to find a port where they could replenish their supplies. Chris Two told Columbus that there were no ports in the New World so Columbus told Chris Two to find a “New Port.”

The next day, after sighting land, Columbus asked Chris Two if that was the new port, upon which Chris Two replied, “Sir, if that’s a new port, it’s news to me!”
