O U R O N ' S H I S T O R Y O U R O N ' S H I S T O R Y N A T IN A T IO U R O N ' S H I S T O R Y N A T Iather of American Rocketry and a pioneer of space exploration, Robert FGoddard was born in Worcester, Massachusetts on October 5, 1882.

During his lifetime he was made fun of for his idea of constructing a space

flight machine. In 1926, he launched the world's first liquid-fueled rocket

on a farm near Auburn, Massachusetts. The rocket rose 41 feet for a 2.5-

second flight and landed 184 feet away in a cabbage field. Goddard died in

1945 and did not live to see his dream of his rockets reaching into space

come true. But Goddard's work established the groundwork for American

rocketry. On May 1, 1959, the newly established National Aeronautics and

Space Administration named the Goddard Space Flight Center in his honor.

It is difficult to say what is impossible, for the dream of yesterday is the hope of today and the reality of tomorrow. Robert H. Goddard.
