Conventional System Architecture
The philosophy of a conventional system revolvesaround dividing the building into a number of areascalled zones. The detectors and callpoints withineach zone are then wired on dedicated circuits. In theevent of a detector or callpoint being triggered, the panel is able to identify which circuit contains thetriggered device and thereby indicate which zone thefire alarm has come from.
It is then necessary to manually search the indicatedzone to pinpoint the exact cause of the fire alarm.
Unwanted Alarms
Because most conventional detectors are simple twostate devices they can only be in either a normal orfire condition. Although modern components andgood system design can go some way to reducingpotential problems, it is not uncommon forconventional systems to generate unwanted alarmsdue to certain operating conditions or transientenvironmental conditions such as the presence ofsteam near to a smoke detector.
A key development aimed at reducing suchunwanted alarms has been the multi-criteria detector.Traditionally, detectors were designed to respond toparticular fire phenomena such as heat or thepresence of smoke. However, Cooper now offermulti-criteria devices, which contain both a smokesensing element and a thermal sensing element.
The fire alarm decision is taken by analysis of theresponses from both elements, resulting in improveddetection performance as well as greatly enhancedfalse alarm suppression.
Sounder Circuits
In addition to the detection circuits, there is also aneed for separate circuits of alarm annunciationdevices such as sounders and beacons to signal theexistence of a fire alarm condition to the buildingusers. For sounder circuit continuity monitoring tofunction effectively, sounder circuits have to be wiredin a single radial circuit, spurs and tees are notpermitted.
Almost every conventional fire panel will havefacilities for more than one sounder circuit andgenerally the higher the specification of the panel orthe higher the number of detection zones provided, the more sounder circuits will be provided.
Normally however there will be less sounder circuitsthan detection zone circuits so it will be necessary fora sounder circuit to provide cover for more than onezone.
This increases installation complexity by forcing thesounder wiring to follow different routes to that of thedetector wiring.
When designing a conventional system it is importantto ensure that the panel has adequate zone capacityfor the size and complexity of the building and thatthe panel can support the intended sounder circuitwiring and loading.

Detectors
Overview
The Menvier range of conventional detectors
have been specifically designed to operate with
Menvier control panels.
The Menvier optical detector MPD821 is suitable formost applications giving the fastest response to slowburning or smouldering fires which give rise to largevisible smoke particles.
The Menvier photo-thermal detector MPT951 willrespond quickly to fast clean burning fires yetmaintain the advantage of optical detectors whendetecting smouldering fires. The thermalenhancement of this detector allows a higher alarmthreshold which provides a greater rejection of falsealarms. The detector will also raise an alarm attemperatures exceeding 60ºC.
The Menvier fixed heat detectors MMT860 andMHT890 will detect temperatures above 77ºC and92ºC. The rate of rise heat detector MFR830 is usedto detect rapid increases in temperature with amaximum threshold of 60ºC.
These detectors are designed to be used inenvironments where the ambient conditions mightcause false alarms if smoke detection were to beused, for example where there is a high level of dust, fumes, steam or smoke under normal conditions.

Intelligent Addressable System Architecture
48
Intelligent Addressable Product Range
Standard conventional systems utilise simple twostate detectors, which simply provide a switch typesignal to the conventional control panel.
To enable the source of the alarm to be identified, each zone must be wired using a separate circuit, furthermore in the event of a fire alarm beingtriggered, the panel can only identify which zonecontains the triggered device, it is then necessary tomanually search the affected zone to discover theactual cause of the alarm.
Intelligent addressable systems overcome theselimitations, each fire detecting sensor or callpoint iselectronically coded with a unique identification or'address' which is programmed into the deviceduring installation.
The control panel is then able to conduct two waycommunication with any of the addressable devicesconnected to the system by using the unique addressnumber to define which device it wishes tocommunicate with. This operates in a similar mannerto that of a telephone number enablingcommunication between specific telephones.
Under normal conditions the control panelcontinuously interrogates each device in sequenceusing a low power digitally pulsedsignal, and analyses the reply to determine the statusof the sensor or callpoint.
In this manner, the panel can ascertain whether eachdevice is functioning correctly and also discover theamount of smoke or heat that the device is currentlysensing.
This technology allows the panel to make intelligentdecisions as to the appropriate action to take basedon the information it receives from the individualsensors.
This has many advantages, for example very slowbuild up of apparent smoke density seen by a sensorcan cause a warning or pre alarm condition to betriggered by the alarm panel prior to the situationbecoming serious enough to warrant a full alarm.
A typical practical benefit of this technology is thesituation whereby airborne dust particles enter smokedetectors and mimic the appearance of smoke, overtime the concentration of dust can increase to a pointwhere it can cause the detector to falsely trigger analarm condition. With an intelligent addressablesystem, a pre alarm condition will normally betriggered rather than a full alarm giving the buildingoperator the opportunity to clean or replace thesensor rather than suffer the disruption of anunwanted false alarm.
If whilst continually interrogating the smoke and heatsensors, the panel determines that the data gatheredfrom a specific device is appropriate to instigateeither a fire, fault or pre alarm condition, it uses theunique identifying number or address to determinewhich device is involved. Consequently the panel canpinpoint and identify precisely which device hastriggered the fire, fault or pre alarm condition.
This level of sophistication removes the need for eachzone of the building to be wired as a separate circuit. For this reason intelligent addressable systemcomponents are typically connected to the panelusing a small number of large loops thus greatlysimplifying the installation of the system and reducingthe installation cost.
Detectors instead of being simple two state devicesnow function as sensors continually communicatingwith the control panel and providing informationregarding the temperature or concentration ofsmoke in their local environment.
