    3.2 Quality rankings

Since its inception, Mercedes-Benz had maintained a rep-utation for its quality and durability. Objective measureslooking at passenger vehicles, such as J. D. Power sur-veys, demonstrated a downturn in reputation in these cri-teria in the late 1990s and early 2000s. By mid-2005,Mercedes temporarily returned to the industry averagefor initial quality, a measure of problems after the first90 days of ownership, according to J. D. Power.[25] InJ. D. Powers Initial Quality Study for the first quar-ter of 2007, Mercedes showed dramatic improvementby climbing from 25th to 5th place and earning severalawards for its models.[26] For 2008, Mercedes-Benzs ini-tial quality rating improved by yet another mark, to fourthplace.[27] On top of this accolade, it also received the Plat-inum Plant Quality Award for its Mercedes Sindelfin-gen, Germany assembly plant.[27] J. D. Powers 2011 USInitial Quality and Vehicle Dependability Studies bothranked Mercedes-Benz vehicles above average in buildquality and reliability.[28][29] In the 2011 UK J. D. PowerSurvey, Mercedes cars rated above average.[30] A 2014iSeeCars.com study for Reuters found Mercedes to havethe lowest vehicle recall rate.[31]

    4.3 Car nomenclature

Until 1994, Mercedes-Benz used an alphanumeric systemfor categorising their vehicles, consisting of a number se-quence approximately equal to the engines displacementin liters multiplied by 100, followed by an arrangementof alphabetical suffixes indicating body style and enginetype.

C indicates a coupe or cabriolet body style (forexample, the CL and CLK models, although the C-Class is an exception, as it is also offered as a sedan).

D indicates the vehicle is equipped with a dieselengine.

E (for Einspritzung) indicates the vehicles en-gine is equipped with petrol fuel injection. In mostcases (the 600 limousine and Mercedes E-Class be-ing the exceptions), if neither E or D is present, the vehicle has a petrol engine with a carburettor.

G was originally used for the Gelndewagen off-road vehicle, but is now applied to Mercedes SUVsin general (for example, the GLA and GLK).

K was used in the 1930s, indicating a super-charger (Kompressor) equipped engine. One ex-ception is the SSK, where K indicates Kurz (short-wheelbase).

L indicates Leicht (lightweight) for sportingmodels, and Lang (long-wheelbase) for sedanmodels.

R indicates Rennen (racing), used for racingcars (for example, the 300SLR).

S Sonderklasse Special class for flagship mod-els, including the S-Class, and the SL-Class, SLRMcLaren and SLS sportscars.

T indicates Touring and an estate (or stationwagon) body style.

Some models in the 1950s also had lower-case letters (b,c, and d) to indicate specific trim levels. For other mod-els, the numeric part of the designation does not match theengine displacement. This was done to show the modelsposition in the model range independent of displacementor in the price matrix. For these vehicles, the actual dis-placement in liters is suffixed to the model designation. An exception was the 190-class with the numeric designa-tion of 190 as to denote its entry level in the model alongwith the displacement label on the right side of the boot(190E 2.3 for 2.3-litre 4-cylinder petrol motor, 190D 2.5for 2.5-litre 5-cylinder diesel motor, and so forth). Someolder models (such as the SS and SSK) did not have anumber as part of the designation at all.For the 1994 model year, Mercedes-Benz revised thenaming system. Models were divided into classes de-noted by an arrangement of up to three letters (see Cur-rent model range above), followed by a three-digit (ortwo-digit for AMG models, with the number approxi-mately equal to the displacement in litres multiplied by10) number related to the engine displacement as before.Variants of the same model such as an estate version ora vehicle with a diesel engine are no longer given a sepa-rate letter. The SLR, SLS and GT supercars do not carrya numerical designation.Today, many numerical designations no longer reflectthe engines actual displacement but more of the rela-tive performance and marketing position. Despite its en-gine displacement in two litres, the powerplant in the A45AMG produces 355 brake horsepower so the designation

Anotherexample is the E250 CGI having greater performancethan the E200 CGI due to the different engine tuning eventhough both have 1.8-litre engines. From the marketingperspective, E200 seems more upscale than E180. 4.3.1 2015 and beyond

Rationalisation of the model nomenclature was an-nounced in November 2014 for future models.[34][35] Thechanges consolidate many confusing nomenclature andtheir placements in the model range such as CL-Classis now called the S-Class Coup. The naming struc-ture is divided into four categories: core, off-road vehi-cle/SUV, 4-door coup, and roadster. G-Class, V-Class,and Mercedes-AMG GT are unaffected by the change.Note: The CLA is positioned between the A- and B-Classmodels, while the CLS sits between the E- and S-Classes.In addition to the revised nomenclature, Mercedes-Benzhas new nomenclature for the drive systems.

    4.4 Environmental record

Mercedes-Benz has developed multi concept cars with al-ternative propulsion, such as hybrid-electric, fully elec-tric, and fuel-cell powertrains. At the 2007 Frankfurtmotor show, Mercedes-Benz showed seven hybrid mod-els, including the F700 concept car, powered by a hybrid-electric drivetrain featuring the DiesOtto engine.[36][37] In2009, Mercedes-Benz displayed three BlueZERO con-cepts at the North American International Auto Show. Each car features a different powertrain - battery-electric,fuel-cell electric, and gasoline-electric hybrid.[38][39] Inthe same year, Mercedes also showed the Vision S500PHEV concept with a 19 miles (31 km) all-electric rangeand CO2 emissions of 74 grams/km in the New EuropeanDriving Cycle.[40]

Since 2002, Mercedes-Benz has developed the F-Cellfuel cell vehicle. The current version, based on the B-Class, has a 250-mile range and is available for lease, withvolume production scheduled to begin in 2014. Mer-cedes has also announced the SLS AMG E-Cell, a fullyelectric version of the SLS sports car, with deliveries ex-pected in 2013.[41] The Mercedes-Benz S400 BlueHY-BRID[42] was launched in 2009, and is the first productionautomotive hybrid in the world to use a lithium-ion bat-tery.[43][44][45] In mid-2010, production commenced onthe Vito E-Cell all-electric van. Mercedes expects 100vehicles to be produced by the end of 2010 and a further2000 by the end of 2011.[46]

In 2008, Mercedes-Benz announced that it would havea demonstration fleet of small electric cars in two tothree years.[47] Mercedes-Benz and Smart are prepar-ing for the widespread uptake of electric vehicles (EVs)in the UK by beginning the installation of rechargingpoints across their dealer networks. So far 20 Elektrobayrecharging units, produced in the UK by Brighton-basedElektromotive, have been installed at seven locations aspart of a pilot project, and further expansion of the ini-tiative is planned later in 2010.[48]

In the United States, Mercedes-Benz was assessed arecord US$30.66 million fine for their decision to notmeet the federal corporate average fuel economy stan-dard in 2009.[49] Certain Mercedes-Benz cars, includ-ing the S550 and all AMG models sold in the UnitedStates, also face an additional gas guzzler tax.[50] How-ever, newer AMG models fitted with the M157 enginewill not be subject to the gas-guzzler tax, due to im-proved fuel economy,[51] and newer models powered bythe M276 and M278 engines will have better fuel econ-omy. In 2008, Mercedes also had the worst CO2 aver-age of all major European manufacturers, ranking 14thout of 14 manufacturers.[52] Mercedes was also the worstmanufacturer in 2007 and 2006 in terms of average CO2levels, with 181 g and 188 g of CO2 emitted per km,respectively.[53]

Mercedes-Benz brand in 1926 had both already enjoyedsuccess in the new sport of motor racing throughout theirseparate histories. A single Benz competed in the worldsfirst motor race, the 1894 ParisRouen, where mileRoger finished 14th in 10 hours 1 minute. Throughout itslong history, the company has been involved in a rangeof motorsport activities, including sports car racing andrallying. On several occasions Mercedes-Benz has with-drawn completely from motorsport for a significant pe-riod, notably in the late 1930s, and after the 1955 LeMans disaster, where a Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR rammedanother car (An Austin-Healey), took off into the stands, and killed more than 80 spectators. Stirling Moss andco-driver Denis Jenkinson made history by winning the1955 Mille Miglia road race in Italy during a record-breaking drive with an average speed of almost 98 mphin a Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR.[60]

Although there was some activity in the intervening years,it was not until 1987 that Mercedes-Benz returned tofront line competition, returning to Le Mans, DeutscheTourenwagen Meisterschaft (DTM), and Formula Onewith Sauber. The 1990s saw Mercedes-Benz purchaseBritish engine builder Ilmor (now Mercedes-Benz HighPerformance Engines), and campaign IndyCars underthe USAC/CART rules, eventually winning the 1994 In-

dianapolis 500 and 1994 CART IndyCar World SeriesChampionship with Al Unser, Jr. at the wheel. The 1990salso saw the return of Mercedes-Benz to GT racing, andthe Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR, both of which took thecompany to new heights by dominating the FIAs GT1class.Mercedes-Benz is currently active in three forms of mo-torsport, Formula Three, DTM and Formula One.

Mercedes-Benz took part in the world championship in1954 and 1955, but despite being successful with twochampionship titles for Juan-Manuel Fangio,[61] the com-pany left the sport after just two seasons. Fangio is con-sidered by many to be the best F1 driver in history.[62]

Mercedes-Benz returned as an engine supplier in the1990s and part-owned Team McLaren for some years,to which it has supplied engines engineered by Ilmor[63]since 1995. This partnership brought success, includingdrivers championships for Mika Hkkinen in 1998 and1999, and for Lewis Hamilton in 2008, as well as a con-structors championship in 1998. The collaboration withMcLaren had been extended into the production of road-going cars such as the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren. In 2007, McLaren-Mercedes was fined a record US$100million for stealing confidential Ferrari technical data.[64]

In 2009, Ross Brawn's newly conceived Formula Oneteam, Brawn GP used Mercedes engines to help win theconstructors championship, and Jenson Button to be-come champion in the F1 drivers championship. At theend of the season, Mercedes-Benz sold its 40% stake in

    8 Innovations

Numerous technological innovations have been intro-duced on Mercedes-Benz automobiles throughout themany years of their production, including:

The internal combustion engine automobile wasdeveloped independently by Benz and Daimler &Maybach in 1886

Daimler invented the honeycomb radiator of thetype still used on all water-cooled vehicles today

Daimler invented the float carburetor which wasused until replaced by fuel injection

The drop chassis the car originally designatedthe Mercedes by Daimler was also the first carwith a modern configuration, having the carriagelowered and set between the front and rear wheels, with a front engine and powered rear wheels. Allearlier cars were horseless carriages, which hadhigh centres of gravity and various engine/drive-train configurations

The first passenger road car to have brakes on allfour wheels (1924)[72]

In 1936, the Mercedes-Benz 260 D was the firstdiesel powered passenger car.

Mercedes-Benz were the first to offer direct fuel in-jection on the Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing

The safety cage or "safety cell" construction withfront and rear crumple zones was first developed byMercedes-Benz in 1951. This is considered by manyas the most important innovation in automobile con-struction from a safety standpoint[5]

In 1959, Mercedes-Benz patented a device that pre-vents drive wheels from spinning by interveningat the engine, transmission, or brakes. In 1987,Mercedes-Benz applied its patent by introducing atraction control system that worked under both brak-ing and acceleration

an Anti-Lock Brake system (ABS) was first offeredon the W116 450SEL 6.9. They became standardon the W126 S-Class starting production in 1979and first sold in most markets in 1980.

Airbags were first introduced in the European mar-ket, beginning with model year 1981 S-Class.

Mercedes-Benz was the first to introduce pre-tensioners to seat belts on the 1981 S-Class. Inthe event of a crash, a pre-tensioner will tighten thebelt instantaneously, removing any 'slack' in the belt, which prevents the occupant from jerking forwardin a crash

Electronic Stability Programme (ESP), brake as-sist,[73] and many other types of safety equip-ment were all developed, tested, and implementedinto passenger cars first by Mercedes-Benz.Mercedes-Benz has not made a large fuss about itsinnovations, and has even licensed them for use bycompetitors in the name of improving automobileand passenger safety. As a result, crumple zones andanti-lock brakes (ABS) are now standard on all mod-ern vehicles.[5]

    Mercedes M156 engine

The (W211) E320 CDI which has a variable geom-etry turbocharger (VGT) 3.0-litre V6 common raildiesel engine (producing 224 hp or 167 kW), setthree world endurance records. It covered 100,000miles (160,000 km) in a record time, with an aver-age speed of 224.823 km/h (139.70 mph). Threeidentical cars did the endurance run (one set aboverecord) and the other two cars set world records fortime taken to cover 100,000 kilometres (62,137 mi)and 50,000 miles (80,000 km) respectively. Af-ter all three cars had completed the run, their com-bined distance was 300,000 miles (480,000 km) (allrecords were FIA approved).[74]

Mercedes-Benz pioneered a system called Pre-Safeto detect an imminent crash and prepares the carssafety systems to respond optimally. It also calcu-lates the optimal braking force required to avoid anaccident in emergency situations, and makes it im-mediately available for when the driver depresses thebrake pedal. Occupants are also prepared by tight-ening the seat belt, closing the sunroof and windows, and moving the seats into the optimal position.

At 181 horsepower per litre, the M133 engineinstalled in Mercedes-Benz A45 AMG is the

most powerful series production four-cylinder tur-bocharged motor (as of June 2013) and has one ofthe highest power density for a passenger vehicle.[75]

Half a century of vehicle safety innovation helped winMercedes-Benz the Safety Award at the 2007 What Car?Awards.[72]

In the 1980s, Mercedes built the worlds first robot car, together with the team of Professor Ernst Dickmanns atBundeswehr University Munich.[76] Partially encouragedby Dickmanns success, in 1987 the European UnionsEUREKA programme initiated the Prometheus Projecton autonomous vehicles, funded to the tune of nearly800 million. A culmination point was achieved in1995, when Dickmanns re-engineered autonomous S-Class Mercedes took a long trip from Munich in Bavariato Copenhagen in Denmark, and back. On highways, therobot achieved speeds exceeding 175 km/h (109 mph)(permissible in some areas of the German Autobahn). The cars abilities has heavily influenced robot car re-search and funding decisions worldwide.

    9 Tuners

Several companies have become car tuners (or modi-fiers) of Mercedes Benz, in order to increase performanceand/or luxury to a given model.AMG is Mercedes-Benzs in-house performance-tuningdivision, specialising in high-performance versions ofmost Mercedes-Benz cars. AMG engines are all hand-built,[77] and each completed engine receives a tag withthe signature of the engineer who built it. AMG hasbeen wholly owned by Mercedes-Benz since 1999.[78]The 2009 SLS AMG, a revival of the 300SL Gullwing,is the first car to be entirely developed by AMG.There are numerous independent tuners includingBrabus, Carlsson, Kleemann and Renntech.

    10 Sponsorships

In football, Mercedes-Benz sponsors Germany NationalFootball Team. Mercedes-Benz sponsors Bundesliga clubVfB Stuttgart and provides the naming rights for theirstadium, the Mercedes-Benz Arena. The company alsoholds the naming rights to the Mercedes-Benz Super-dome in New Orleans, Louisiana.[79]
