HOLIDAY, CHRISTMAS AWARDS PARTY S. Ross
The choice for our year-end get together this year was fantastic. Our room was decorated to the nines thanks to Carol Ross and her helper Elves, Mateo, Victoria, Diana, Joanne, Rudy, Victoria and Cheryl. Actually it was a group effort. It was a beautiful winter day San Diego style. We had a gift exchange this year. It was one of those fun exchanges where one may go and pick a gift from the table OR take a gift from someone else. It sounds terrible but is actually loads of fun. A gift may only be "stolen" twice, and then it is dead as they call it in the game.
The high light of the day was awarding the person chosen as our Member of the Year. President Victoria presented the award to Rudy Hradecky. Rudy is our Director of Proper Procedures and one of those guys who make things happen when it needs to be done. Rudy helps make our Section a fun place to be when we have an event or function. As they say behind every man is women and Cheryl is always behind Rudy, and us helping to "get er done." THANK YOU RUDY and CHERYL.

THE GIFT EXCHANGE This was the first year for our gift exchange it seems everyone had fun . Numbers were drawn beginning with one and that person got to go to the table and pick out their choice. After some lifting and shaking the choice was made. Number two drawn and that person could go to the gift table or take the gift, that number one hadjust picked and so on. I don't recall who went first but it was interesting from there on

OUR MEMBER OF THE YEAR FOR 2018
Victoria the San Diego Section President presented Mr.Rudy Hradecky with our section's Member of the Year award. The President and the Board of Directors select a member of the section each year who has made the section a fun place to be for our functions, events and overall well being of the section.

Joanne has a vehicle which I happen to know has a bottle in it.
Nune has a box of chocolates
Janette is not showing her hand. Must be something nice!
Needless to say not all these items made it home with the original owner but for sure everyone went home with a prize worth keeping. Undoubtedly there was some re-gifting going on but that is part of the deal. Maybe the board will do it again next year. Having fun is the key word.

PagodaFest Jeff Brook
PagodaFest is coming to San Diego in 2019! What is PagodaFest you might ask? In a nutshell, PagodaFest is about and for Pagoda owners and enthusiasts worldwide who own or otherwise enjoy the iconic Mercedes-Benz 230 SL, 250 SL, and 280 SL roadsters and convertibles and want to learn more about these cars. Sponsored by the International Pagoda SL Group (www.sl113.org), PagodaFest is not formally affiliated with MBCA. Most Pagoda members
own other Mercedes cars and are members of MBCA. Historically, Pagoda events have drawn 25-30 or more Pagoda cars with attendance from all over the United States, Canada, Europe, and even as far away as Australia. PagodaFest San Diego will be the first Pagoda-focused event to take place west of the Mississippi. PagodaFest San Diego will be headquartered at the Grand Pacific Palisades resort in Carlsbad, with car activities scheduled for both Friday, October 4, at the Flower Fields adjacent the Grand Pacific, and a drive starting from the Grand Pacific on Saturday, October 5, and winding throughout portions of San Diego County. At the Flower Fields, technical sessions and interactive presentations are planned to educate PagodaFest attendees on the features, operation and maintenance of their Pagoda cars. Also, there will be a Pagoda Marketplace enabling attendees and vendors to sell, buy and trade all things Pagoda. In the afternoon we will have a Pagoda Showcase to show off your Pagoda on the lush grounds of the Flower Fields. A perfect setting for socializing with fellow Pagoda enthusiasts. We will end our first day with one of the things for which San Diego is best known, namely a Fiesta dinner with mariachi music, traditional dancers, and a Pagoda piñata! The drive on Saturday will be a Pagoda Poker Run, and is a self-paced leisurely tour through several of San Diego County's scenic sights while competing with fellow Pagoda drivers for the best hand of poker. At each of five planned stops, Poker Run participants will be given a card ultimately forming a five-card poker hand. Prizes will be given for the best (and also the worst!) poker hand at a celebratory awards dinner that evening at the Encinitas Ranch Golf Resort overlooking the beautiful San Diego coastal bluffs. Here you can watch the sunset over the Pacific Ocean while enjoying your favorite beverage and friends while being warmed by the outdoor fireplace. Awards will be given to the winners of the Showcase and the Poker Run, and raffle prizes awarded. All of the above fun and excitement is conveniently available in one all-inclusive PagodaPASS ticket. If you are interested in learning more about PagodaFest, or to buy tickets, please visit the official PagodaFest website http://www.pagodafest.com. However, the number of PagodaPASSes is limited and
we expect them to sell out soon. So if you have a Pagoda we hope that you will act quickly and join us for two days of social and technical Pagoda fun! See you at PagodaFest in 2019! THE SAN DIEGO SECTION INVITES YOU AND ENCOURAGES YOU TO JOIN THE MBCA, AND THE SAN DIEGO SECTION, UNLESS YOU ARE ALREADY A MEMBER.

La Jolla Christmas Parade
Sunday December 2, 201
Due to unusual circumstance and fate the Mercedes-Benz Club played a key role of the La Jolla Christmas Parade. The Packard Club had been contacted earlier in the year to provide cars to transport dignitaries in the parade. Anybody who is anybody in San Diego was in the parade. As sometimes happens the Packard Club did not have enough Packards to transport all the important people who needed a ride. Other car clubs were providing cars but still not enough. The Parade organizer Ms. Kerr contacted the Packard Regional Director Richard Schauer and said "Help"! Since I was already committed with our Packard I offered up one of our Mercedes-Benz so Carol drove the 560SL. Of course they wanted the top down. For some reason the top did not want to come down. An emergency run to Onager Corp. was made for assistance. Fast forward after an hour or so the top gave up and come down. We had two Mercedes-Benz in the parade and one Packard driven by Marjo Miller and Dion Dyer who are also members of the Mercedes-Benz Club. Oskar Kristen drove his 1960 190SL. Oskar has quite a load in his SL. His dignitary was Erika Torri, the Cultural Marshall
Carol and the San Diego Chief of Police, David Nisleit
Some of the dignitaries choose not to go with their assigned driver causing the Parade Director a lot of grief. One California assemblyman ditched a Packard for a new BMW. In fact he showed up at the parade at the last minute in the BMW. This is one of the cases which I thought was rude. This caused two cars to drive the parade with no one. One vehicle broke down the, San Diego Police Museum vintage paddy wagon. It had a modern engine but it failed to proceed. This resulted in the San Diego Chief of Police riding with Carol in the 560SL. The Chief went straight to Carol when his ride would not start. It was a musical cars program by the time we got underway.

WIN a CHICKeN DINNer
We Have a CHICKeN DINNer WINNer ! Diana Kruse nailed it.
This is a 1935 Mercedes-Benz 130H. The H stands for heck which is German for rear. It was the first production rear engine car made by Mercedes-Benz. The engine is four cylinder 1308cc, water cooled with a four speed transmission and produces 26hp. The car has a top speed of 56mph. It was in production from 1933 to 1935. A man named Josef Ganz a Hungarian born engineer, who became a German citizen, was the leading proponent of the rear engine car and was actually the first to use the term
Volkswagen. He was a consultant for Mercedes-Benz in the development of this car. Fernando Porsche was also on the team and Ganz worked for several automakers in developing the rear engine concept. He is considered the father of the Volkswagen. Ganz was a writer for an automobile magazine, Motor-Kritik, and was critical of the German car builders for not building an affordable car for the working man. He actually presented the concept of an affordable car to Hitler in 1933. But, alas Josef was Jewish and was critical of the German car makers, so he was arrested by the Gestapo and decided to move to Switzerland. Thus Porsche got his picture taken with Adolph and all the credit.
The Standard Superior sales brochure for 1934. Note the term Volkswagen
The Standard superior second prototype. Standard was a motorcycle company that agreed to produce the automobile. It was powered by a two cylinder two stoke 396 cc engine

BUTTONWILLOW DRIVING EVENTS 2019
SATURDAYS, Feb. 16th; Aug. 10th; and Dec. 7th; 2019 8:30 AM to 4:00PM
Fast facts about Buttonwillow
This is an opportunity for members of the Mercedes Club to participate in a one-day driving experience, either on an individual basis or as an organized membership gathering. This is a one-day performance driving and learning event on how to become a better driver and to learn more about the performance handling aspects of your Mercedes. Although this event held at a racetrack is referred to as performance driving, this is not what one’s primary reason for going to Buttonwillow is about. One will be given the opportunity to learn to drive our Mercedes more safely and competently by being taught by a professional driver. We will learn about speed, cornering, braking, and more importantly the capability of our Mercedes or other automobile as well as our own driving capabilities. After instruction, you may if you want take to the track solo and see how you do. Buttonwillow Raceway Park is a motorsports park in Kern County, California, 10 miles (16 km) north of the town of Buttonwillow and 28 miles (45 km) northwest of Bakersfield. It is located just off the Buttonwillow exit on I-5. Constructed during World War 1 by world famous racing driver Dario Resta, it is now owned and operated by the California Sports Car Club, a region of SCCA. Buttonwillow is the "flagship" track of Cal Club, and is also the location of the Cal Club's administrative offices. (Courtesy of Wikipedia) You can visit the Buttonwillow Raceway website: buttonwillowraceway.com. The 2019 schedule for the following Saturdays is as follows: February 16th, August 10th, and December 7th. THE POINT IS DO NOT BE INTIMIDATED BY THE TERMS RACE TRACK, PERFORMANCE DRIVING ETC. THIS IS AN OPPORTUNITY OF A LIFE TIME TO LEARN ABOUT YOUR CARS PERFORMACE, SAFETY FEATURES AND HOW TO USE THEM SAFELY AND EFFECTIVELY. ANYONE WHO HAS PARTICIPATED IN THESE EVENTS HAS LEFT A MUCH BETTER DRIVER AND HAD A BARREL OF FUN LEARNING ABOUT THE SAFETY FEATURES OF THEIR CAR. WOMEN HAVE ALWAYS DONE VERY WELL IN THESE EVENTS AND WE HOPE TO SEE ALL OF YOU THERE WITH US HAVING SOME FUN! Since the event is a one-day event, a suggested schedule would be to arrive by Friday late afternoon, plan on staying overnight Saturday at one of the local motels, and leaving Sunday morning at your leisure. Lodging is available about 10 miles away at Motel 6 located just off the freeway south of the track. Phone 661/764-5121. Reservations for these events can fill quickly. Please feel free to contact Rudy Hradecky (PHONE: 619.246.2094 or email: [email protected]) as early as possible so that we could reserve some slots. The cost is $195.00 for the one day, and helmets can be rented at the track for $15.00. A $15.00 credit at the gift shop is also included. Rag top convertibles are not allowed, although SL’s with an automatic roll bar are. BUTTON WILLOW PERFORMANCE DRIVING UPDATE The dates for the Buttonwillow Performance Driving Course being sponsored by the MBCA San Diego section is SATURDAYS, Feb. 16th; Aug. 10th; and Dec. 7th; 2019. Registration is handled through the Buttonwillow website: buttonwillowraceway.com. The cost is $195.00 for the one day, and helmets can be rented at the track for $15.00. The cost includes lunch, a $15.00 credit at the track store, and classroom instruction. Rag top convertibles are not allowed, but SL models with the roll bar are allowed.
