Educational Leadership Seminars and Workshops from the Mercer County Educational Service Center, Celina, Ohio

The Mercer County Educational Service Center, Celina, OH offers a variety of school leader and teacher leader workshops aimed at increasing student achievement and educator productivity. All trainings are conducted in cooperation with Curriculum Management Systems, Inc. (CMSi), with licensed trainers. • The Three Minute Classroom Walk-Through Training is an exclusive approach to supervision for

any educational leader responsible for mentoring and supervising teachers who desires to move supervision to a collaborative level, which can have a powerful impact on student achievement. This two-day training includes visitations to actual classrooms.

• The Three Minute Walk-Through Follow-up is designed for districts that have had administrators trained in the Downey (3 Minute) Walk-Through Training. The follow-up can be customized to meet the administrators’ needs.

• Advanced Classroom Walk-Through Training is designed for those who have completed the initial level walk-through and have some experience using walk-throughs in their school. This advanced training provides supervised practice in the basic walk-through protocol and the reflective process. This is a two-day training.

• SchoolView: Gathering Trend Data on Curricular and Instructional Classroom Practices (School Visitation Protocol) is a diagnostic data-gathering tool that principals and other school leaders can use to gather trend data regarding curricular and instructional practices in the classroom. This observational data can be used for needs assessment and changes in classroom practices as a result of staff development initiatives. One day training.

• Raising Student Test Scores: A Baker’s Dozen Ways presents to teachers, school-based administrators, and other instructional leaders 13 powerful strategies to raise student test scores. This one-day seminar focuses on working with low-performing students with effective approaches to improve student achievement and also works with high performance schools who seek continued student growth.

• Examining Student Work for Standards Alignment and Real-World/Test-Item Formats is designed for school-based administrators and teacher participants to examine classroom artifacts of student work and calibrate those artifacts with state standards and tested objectives. The calibration process provides educators with feedback regarding the grade level and cognition type of student work.

• Deep Curriculum Alignment is an intensive two-day seminar that implements proven strategies to improve student achievement via curriculum alignment. The seminar provides individuals with the knowledge and theoretical base as well as the practical steps to construct teacher-friendly curriculum guides that increase the congruence between the written, taught, and tested curricula in classrooms, schools, and school districts and that will lead to substantial gains in student achievement on high-stakes tests currently in use.

The Three-Minute Classroom Walk-Through Learn a classroom visitation protocol that inspires reflective discussion between you and your teachers! This two-day training includes theory, hands-on practice, and visitations to actual classrooms. process How the underlying premises of the approach, which is informal and non-judgmental in

nature, focus on the development of staff through reflective choice How the reflective conversation and questions complement the classroom walk throughs How reflective questions are phrased How dynamic, new “reflective conversation dialogues” are conducted How frequent classroom visitations and the walk through process are supported by a strong

research base

The ultimate goals of this training are to create:

Reflective, self-directed, self-analytical, interdependent teachers who examine their own practices (even those who initially are at the dependent level)

Teachers who are continually willing to improve their teaching Teachers who are committed to teaching the district curriculum and working for ever-higher

Coping with High Stakes Testing: Deep Curriculum Alignment

A workshop for curriculum designers, curriculum directors, and others whose daily

work focuses on the development of a tightly aligned curriculum

Deep curriculum alignment is adjusting what is taught to align with what is measured on the high-stakes test. It increases the fit between what children learn and how they are assessed. Achievement is assured and gains are evident almost immediately. It is a complex process involving intensive effort and skill in curriculum design, delivery, and monitoring. Based on the work of Fenwick English, Betty Steffy, Carolyn Downey and others, you will be trained to focus on what it truly important in the school improvement process. The ultimate goal of this training is to provide educators with the ability to create a curriculum document which will guide teaching that will promote higher student achievement as it is measured on high-stakes tests.

The topics covered during this two-day session include:

Principles of alignment between the written, taught, and tested curriculum

Rationale for curriculum alignment

Foundational concepts of deep alignment

Specialized terminology used in the deep alignment process

Sociological perspective of cultural capital and how it relates to students and tests

You will also learn how to:

Backload publicly-released test items into the curriculum

Deconstruct test items Determine the context, content, and cognitive level for

alignment Develop parallel test items Check for text/test alignment Design curriculum guides from state standards Develop a multi-year plan for curriculum review Design a curriculum guide format and its critical

components Evaluate curriculum documents
