Feels like spring

The unexpected death of 16-year-old Islander Middle School student, Jim Holt, on Feb. 21 represents an intense personal loss for many people across King County.
The young man with extreme disabilities who could not speak was loved and cherished and cel-ebrated. By all accounts, from school bus drivers to surgeons to school administrators, teachers, parapros and fellow students, Jim was an integral and even an essen-tial part of their daily lives. Each felt a personal connection to Jim and his family.
They referred to themselves as ‘Team Jim.’
Jim had genetic disorder, a tri-nomial translocation of the lower
part of the 16th and 17th chromo-somes. Pregnancies that involve defects of the 16th chromosome usually end in miscarriage. As such, a child with the defect is rare. The babies who do make it usually do not live long. The defects cause severe mental and physical retardation and seizures.
For his parents, Kathy Holt and Steve Holt, the fact that their tiny baby boy had extreme medi-cal issues came as a surprise. He arrived on Christmas Day, just two weeks early. But he weighed only four pounds. The doctors at Children’s Hospital told his par-ents that there was a 90 percent chance that he would not live beyond a year.
After a few days in the hospital, they took him home with their older son, Thomas, and learned
how to care for him. From birth, he required 24-hour
care. He could only walk a few steps unassisted. He would not eat by mouth and was instead fed every two hours through a gastro-intestinal tube. He had a seizure disorder. He had between 20 and 30 a day — some barely noticeable, but others were grand mal seizures that might last several minutes. He could choke or lose consciousness and might require a 911 call. His lungs were compromised and he often developed pneumonia.
Jim’s mental ability was that of a 10-month-old, his mother said.
He could hear, but it was not certain how much or what he understood from words. He had some vision, but they were not sure how much. But what they were certain about was that he could communicate. He could not speak, but he was vocal, his mother laughed. “He made him-self known.”

sR-520 bridge closed again this weekend
The State Route 520 float-ing bridge will be closed this weekend, March 15 through March 18.
Crews will close the bridge beginning at 11 p.m. on Friday and will reopen 520 by 5 a.m. on Monday morning.
Due to the closure and a Sounders match on Saturday night, the I-90 express lanes will run in the westbound direc-tion from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday.
23rd annual sogetsu Ikebana exhibition this weekend
The 23rd annual Sogetsu Ike-bana exhibition will be held on Saturday, March 16, and Sunday, March 17, at the Mercer Island Community and Event Center.
The event will run from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday.

State Legislature has new commenting system for bills
In the 2013 Legislature session, comments from the public can now be submitted on bills being considered by the House and Senate.
As part of a new pilot project, comments are seen by members of the Legislature.
To comment on a bill, the public can set up an account, and comment on any of the bills under con-sideration.
Legislators and staff will not be able to respond to individual comments, and anyone looking for a spe-cific response is advised to contact their legislator directly or by calling the Legislative hotline at (800) 562-6000.
Mercer Island spring recycling event is April 13
The annual spring recy-cling event on Mercer Island will take place on Saturday, April 13, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Mercer Island boat launch.
Items accepted at the event include: tires, motor oil, filters and antifreeze, lead acid batteries and house-hold goods and clothing. Porcelain toilets and sinks are accepted for a $10 fee, while propane tanks are a $5 fee, as are appliances and scrap metal. Refrigerators, freezers and air condition-ers are accepted for a $10 fee, the same with mattress-es. All fees are cash only.
Computers and televi-sions will not be accepted, and neither will clean-ing products or household chemicals.

Answer the call for the Boys & Girls Club Phone-a-Thon
The Mercer Island Boys & Girls Club is hosting its annual Phone-a-Thon this week, through Thursday, March 14.
Donations are being asked to help with programs at the club and to provide schol-arships. Last year the club provided $60,000 in schol-arships to local students.

the proposed I-90 tolling has been released by the City of Mercer Island after its unanimous adoption at the City Council meet-ing on March 4. The final draft of the plan shows that litigation may be necessary and calls for the city to initiate coalition building, lobbying, public engage-ment, review of federal authority to toll, and other action items that will aid the city in responding to the state’s proposal.
The plan introduction states, “The Mercer Island City Council opposes the imposition of the proposed tolls on Interstate 90 in the
central Puget Sound region. Tolls will have a signifi-cant financial impact on all those who live, work, visit, attend schools or own busi-nesses not only on Mercer Island, but throughout the region.”
The city has hired Washington, D.C., legal counsel to review fed-eral approval to toll, and a lobbyist to advocate in Olympia. The city is meet-ing with other cities to start forming coalitions. The City Council will provide regular updates at Council meetings.

are up. Twenty-six single family home sales were finalized in February compared to just nine a year ago. The median sale price for the single fam-ily homes sold last month was $955,000, up from $865,000 a year ago. Just
one condo sold a year ago on the Island for $169,000. Last month, four condos were sold with a median price of $227,500.
The number of sales that were pending (not yet finalized) last month was up significantly to 46 (both homes and condos) this past month. That number
is 25 more than a year ago. The number of closed sales are up as well — from just 10 closures finalized for the month a year ago to 30 last month, a rate of one a day.
More activity has appeared with the addi-tion of 62 new listings for both homes and condos last month, up from just 45 added in February a year ago.

EYE ON MI | science fair seasonsaid. But if he heard another child cry, he would get upset.
He did not sleep more than a few hours at night. He would often be up at 1 or 3 a.m. and would remain awake. His mother would get up too, she said. As she worked from home, she used the time to work through the early morning hours.
From the time he was 3 years old, Jim was in spe-cial education in the Mercer Island School District. His care and schooling involved dozens of people.
He was not toilet trained. But, like any mother, Holt learned to change his diaper just about anywhere.
But at school, there was a special changing table that can be lowered then lifted. There was other special equipment: a tricycle, a spe-cial chair with an attached table.
His father Steve and step-mother Pattie, in Renton, were very involved in Jim’s life. After Jim was born, Steve Holt told his supervisors at Boeing that his focus would be on his family — that he would be available for his son, Jim, whenever he need-ed to be.
Jim also had two older step-
siblings, Kat and Selby, and his grandmother, Dorothy, who doted on him. He was accepted and celebrated by the people at St. Andrews Presbyterian church in Renton.
Students fussed over Jim when he was at Island Park, then when he moved on to middle school, where there was a whole new world to embrace him. Students com-peted for the chance to be with him.
He was a rock star, his older brother Thomas often said.
There were many hospital stays. Each time, his mother said, there were cards and picture from students at school.
His mother cannot say enough about all of the people who rallied around Jim from the very begin-ning. There were doctors and nurses, of course, but also neighbors, bus drivers, school staff and fellow stu-dents who befriended and protected Jim. They were all a part of ‘Team Jim.’
Holt worried if people would resent Jim because he required so much time and attention.
For the most part, it appears they took it all in stride.
“I cannot say enough about the school district and the people who loved and cared for him,” she said.
He died on the morning
of Feb. 21. It was mid-win-ter break for Mercer Island School District students, and Jim was at home with a care-giver.
It was unexpected.Jim had gone past the
13-year milestone, his moth-er said. “He had 10 surger-ies, and we thought we were kind of done with the major issues.”
He was prone to having pneumonia or similar crises. But she did not expect this. He had not been ill.
More than 400 Islanders attended the service for Jim at Mercer Island Presbyterian Church on Feb. 26. The ser-vice was lead by Rev. Scott Anderson of St. Andrew in Renton.
“I am also a member of ‘Team Jim,’” Rev. Anderson said, adding that Jim was a “gift” to our congregation.
“During services, Jim would sometimes have some-thing to say,” Rev. Anderson said, explaining that he would wait for Jim to finish until to continuing.
“It was hard sometimes to have Jim, but astonishing, at the same time,” he said.
“We needed him as much as he needed us.”

Trash, loose gravel on Mercer Ways is very dangerous
Sunday, March 3, was sunny and sort of warm, and I used the day to start my sea-son of regularly cycling around the Island, but...
The shoulders of East and West Mercer Ways (the way all around the Island’s 14-mile circumference) and a bit of the North Mercer throughways were unride-able in many places due to the winter’s accumulations of gravel, sand, glass, mossy blowdown, sticks, limbs (roadkills, ewwwwww!) and in one place, an 8-inch tree trunk! Unsafe at any speed on a bike! Add the ever-present moisture on the east side, and it is danger-ous to ride upon! With the constant tension between cyclists and motorists (and don’t forget pedestrians!), I try to ride the shoulders as much as possible — which is almost impossible right now.
I have contacted city maintenance to help clean this up, but to no avail. Can they please run the street sweeper around the Mercer Ways and sweep the paved
shoulders and sidewalk areas and a foot of clearance over the edge just to keep the extra stuff from coming back on the pave-ment!? Winter always leaves its debris, and it’s time to clean it up for safety if they can spare the equipment and driver time.
Motorists and cyclists and pedestrians will be happier, safer and more congenial if you will!

‘Snoopy citizens’ get personal information
There is something wrong with the law when any snoopy citizen can get my personal information from the city just by asking for it. I received the following email from the City of Mercer Island attorney.

I am writing to advise you that the city has received two public records requests from Marty Gale and Claus Jensen for a copy of the list of email addresses the city has put together to provide updates regard-ing the I-90 tolling proposal.
Under state law, we must release a copy of the list (which includes just your email address) to the requestors. We will be releas-ing the list tomorrow.
I apologize for this situation and for any unsolicited email you may receive as a result. Please know that the city takes your privacy seriously and wish we were legally able to handle this differently.

I consider my personal email private and strongly object that the city is forced by law to give out this information because someone would like to see who is receiving information about the I-90 tolling. There is no possible reason why these people need this information, and I will call them out for what they are.

Feb. 24Purse theft: An 18-year-old woman’s purse was stolen when she held an open house and showing in the 7800 block of 79th Avenue S.E., in a South end neighbor-hood west of the Lakes. The purse contained $80 in cash, and the total loss was $382.
Feb. 26Burglaries: Suspects broke into a home in the 4100 block of 94th Avenue S.E.,
in a neighborhood east of Covenant Shores, through a rear basement window. They shattered the window, pried the handle open and entered the home but left without stealing any items, as the alarm may have activated upon their entry. The bur-glary happened between 11 a.m., Feb. 25, and 11:15 a.m., Feb. 26.A window screen was removed from a residence in a neighborhood northwest of Pioneer Park, in the 6200 block of 82nd Avenue S.E., sometime between 12 and
3 p.m. The resident came home to find the window open, but entry was not apparent and no items were stolen.Malicious Mischief: Someone punched in two vending machines, containing soda and candy, trying to get the money inside sometime overnight in the 9700 block of S.E. 36th Street. The dam-age was estimated at $200.criMinal iMPersonation: Callers pretending to be U.S. Customs agents and an assistant district attorney contacted a 62-year-old North end woman at 12:30 p.m. The callers tried to get $1,500 from the woman by telling her that she must pay a fine for online purchases of prescription drugs and she would be arrested if she did not pay. They wanted her to meet them at the Seattle Federal Court House to pay the money. Keys theft: A Bellevue woman’s house keys were stolen out of her purse while she was at work in the Island Corporate Center building in the 7500 block of S.E. 24th Street. No other items were taken from her purse.
Feb. 27accident: A vehicle struck
a Shorewood manage-ment golf cart at 2:10 p.m. in the 9000 block of West Shorewood Drive while exit-ing a parking garage. The golf cart had the right of way but was in the middle of the road, causing a shorter reaction time for the other driver. The golf cart was not damaged.
Feb. 28accident: A head-on colli-sion occurred at 6:01 p.m. in the intersection of S.E. 27th Street and 78th Avenue S.E. when a van, driven by a 20-year-old woman, crossed in front of an Audi. Both vehicles had a green light, but the van was making a left-hand turn and failed to yield. Both vehicles’ airbags deployed and an aid unit responded to the scene. No injuries were reported. The Audi was towed with damages. One witness was present. hit and run: A 28-year-old resident of Mississippi was found facedown in the road in the 8000 block of East Mercer Way at 5:10 p.m. The victim did not know what happened, but said that he felt pain in his knee and lower back before falling to the ground. He was taken to
Overlake Hospital.
March 1stolen vehicle: A resident reported a parked vehicle that was “out of place” in the 2900 block of 81st Place S.E. Police found that the vehicle had been stolen out of Renton. Burglary: A burglar found a hidden key and used it to enter a home in the 6000 block of S.E. 22nd Street, in the Faben Point neighbor-hood, sometime after Feb. 24. Jewelry was stolen, and the estimated loss was $3,000.
March 2car Prowls: A stereo was stolen out of a vehicle’s
dashboard in the 2200 block of 82nd Avenue S.E., the neighborhood west of the Mercer Island Community and Event Center, sometime overnight. The SUV was parked, unlocked, in the vic-tim’s driveway. Nothing was damaged.A Chrysler PT cruiser was prowled in the same block that night, and music CDs, $40 in cash, a vehicle regis-tration and flash drive were stolen. theft: A package delivered by FedEx to an 81-year-old man was opened and its contents were stolen in the 7700 block of S.E. 22nd Street, on the North end. The package had contained an iPad case, and the estimated loss was $150.
March 4dui: Police arrested a 33-year-old man at 2:19 a.m. in the 6000 block of westbound I-90 after stopping his vehicle for several lane travel violations. Police observed an open 12-pack of beer and cans in the backseat. A strong odor of intoxicants was present, and the driver admitted consuming three beers. He failed sobriety tests and was released to a sober friend after standard process-ing.

Halldor Jon Bjarnason October 22, 1939 – February 27, 2013
Bud, as he was known by his family and friends, was born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He died peacefully on February 27, 2013.
After he received his Business Administration Degree with honors in Winnipeg, the west called to him. Bud lived in Banff, Alberta for a summer driving a tour bus. He loved the west so much he moved to Vancouver, B.C. and never looked back. He said the mountains called to him. His first job was in the temporary help business. He loved it, and was happy when his company relocated him to Seattle, Washington.
Bud made his home on Mercer Island, with his loving wife Sandy, whom he met in Vancouver before his move. There they raised two children, Greg and Susan, and started the company Molly Brown Temps. Inc., a temporary staffing company. Molly Brown became a great local business where many friends and family worked. Bud retired in 2006, handing the reins to his son.
In Bud’s leisure time he enjoyed sailing and travelling. He loved cruising on his boat the Molly Brown in the San Juan Islands and Desolation Sound. His boating friends would often find him head down in the engine compartment tinkering, which he loved just as much as sailing. He also enjoyed ski vacations, touring Europe, and especially warming his bones in Hawaii. Banff spoke to his soul and he went every chance he got.
He is survived by his son, Greg Bjarnason (Stacy), his daughter, Susan Wais (Ken), grand-children, Sarah and Bligh Bjarnason, Greta and Josephine Wais, sister Shirley Syms (Leigh) and his nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his wife, Sandra Bjarnason, mother, Una Bjarnason, and father, Halldor Bjarnason.
He will be missed dearly.Bud will be remembered on Wednesday March 13, 2013 at

The Mercer Island Police Department reported 11 arrests and 808 total calls for service in February.
Seven burglaries oc-curred, in addition to one robbery, four cases of assault, five identity thefts
and 20 thefts, including vehicle prowls and mail theft.
The traffic report shows 11 total accidents, two hit-and-runs, one pedes-trian/vehicle accident, one DUI accident and two DUI arrests, and 174 total cita-tions, including 25 parking tickets.

was broken into at the Island Corporate Center on Tuesday afternoon, March 5. A suit-case containing $500,000 in S. Kashi & Sons jewelry was stolen out of the vehicle, a Nissan with a Florida license plate, in the parking lot at 7525 S.E. 24th Street. S. Kashi & Sons is a whole-sale com-pany located in New York City. A sec-ond suitcase, which contained the victim’s clothes and personal items for the business trip, was also stolen and the loss was $300.
The 38-year-old salesman had arrived in Seattle, from New York, the previous day and stopped for a brief break on Mercer Island after show-ing his company’s jewelry at various jewelry stores in
the greater Seattle area. He carried the piece of luggage with the jewelry in and out of each store, according to the police report. The lug-gage contained hundreds of
costly pieces of jewelry — engagement rings, bridal jewelry, fash-ion rings and more.
While the s a l e s m a n was at lunch inside Island Crust Cafe for about 25 min-utes, a large Office Depot truck blocked his view of his
vehicle. Sometime after 1:44 p.m.,
the thief shattered the hatch-back window of the Nissan. The cost of repair is an esti-mated $300.

I have called Mercer Island my home for more than 40 years. Before joining the Legislature, I served for years as a City Councilmember and mayor. I am so proud to represent my fellow Islanders in Olympia, and I wear my com-munity on my sleeve every day as a legislator.
That is why I have intro-duced legislation that will help protect Islanders from the impact of tolling on I-90.
There is no question that tolling will dispropor-tionately affect those of us who live on Mercer Island. Left unaccompanied by safeguards for residents, this could fundamentally change the character of our community. I believe, like you, that something must be done to mitigate the impact of these tolls.
The current tolling plan only involves the float-ing bridge section of I-90, which would ensure a free exit eastward towards Bellevue. More needs to be done to expand this free-dom of mobility for Mercer Islanders.
The bill I am sponsoring
compels the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) to consider measures to
protect residents of Mercer Island when implementing tolls on I-90. It also lays out three specific recommendations for how to achieve that protection.
The first would allow Washington citizens to cross one tolled section without having to
pay the fee. This straight-forward approach is the most basic, but would still ensure that we have at least one way to leave the Island without being hit with toll fees.
The second would let Islanders select one direc-tion of the bridge to be exempt from paying a toll. This would protect those living on Mercer Island who have to leave every day to go to Seattle or Bellevue to work or get children to school. It would also provide each of us with the flexibility to choose which direction is best for us personally.
The final option would be to only charge driv-ers the toll if they crossed the full span of the I-90 bridge from Bellevue to Seattle. This would protect daily commuters on and off Mercer Island while at
the same time reducing through traffic.
WSDOT would also be empowered to consider other methods of mitigat-ing the impacts of tolling. This would include many of the positive ideas that have come from the Mercer Island community, such as a maximum monthly or annual amount regardless of how often we leave the Island.
With proper mitigation for Mercer Island resi-dents, tolling could actu-ally have a positive impact on our community. All of the other drivers who have been using I-90 as a way to avoid 520 tolls will return to using the best route for them — meaning significantly less traffic running through our community every day.
The decision to toll I-90 was set in motion in 2009, and reversing course at this stage is unlikely to occur
at the legislative level. Approval will still need to be sought out from the federal government, and — at least currently — implementation is in the hands of WSDOT, but the discussion is all but settled in Olympia.
The Legislature will pass an authorization for tolls on I-90, either with my
amendments or over my objections. I will, howev-er, do every-thing within my power to protect my fellow Islanders from the impacts
of these tolls — starting with this legislation and continuing with whatever needs to be done.

In her recent Mercer Island Reporter piece, Representative Judy Clibborn claims concern about the effects that I-90
tolling will have on Mercer Island residents, businesses and employees. However, her expressed concern about the deleterious effects of I-90 tolling on Mercer Island is seriously
undercut by her roll-out of a $10 billion transporta-tion funding package that allocates not a single dime towards SR-520 construc-tion. Instead, a $1.4 billion funding shortfall will be
borne entirely by those travelling on I-90.
To decrease that bur-den, Rep. Clibborn has spon-sored HB 1945, outlining possible I-90 toll protection for Island residents. Yet, the bill only directs WSDOT to “explore options to mitigate any dispropor-tionate impact” of tolling. Presently unknown are where this exploration will lead and whether or not that mitigation will be permanent. Once tolling is established, the same gantries that offer free pas-sage one year can be easily reprogrammed, at the drop of a budgetary shortfall the next year, to collect full fare from all travelers.
Furthermore, by appear-ing to mitigate Mercer Islanders’ I-90 tolling concerns, HB 1945 under-mines the need for a full environmental impact study to comprehensively analyze the impacts of tolling I-90 on the entire Puget Sound region and I-90 corridor.
Additionally, Rep. Clibborn’s claim that the current tolling plan
involves tolling only the floating section of I-90 is contradicted by a WSDOT presenta-tion in the 2008 SR-520 Tolling Implementation Committee Report, in which segmented tolls, both on the east and west approaches to the Island, are offered as alternatives 3 and 4. Indeed, the current WSDOT website shows three potential gantry sites, including the East Channel Bridge. At the Jan. 7, 2013, Mercer Island City Council meeting, WSDOT’s tolling director, Craig Stone, and Judy Clibborn offered no clarification on the final plans.
Unfortunately, users of I-90 do not know what to believe. In her recent Reporter article (March 6, 2013), Rep. Clibborn states, “The decision to toll I-90 was set in motion in 2009…” Yet, in early 2008, Rep. Clibborn spon-sored ESHB 3096, which required WSDOT to work with FHWA to determine what steps would be need-ed to toll the Interstate 90 bridge. Then, in the Seattle Times on March 13, 2009, she declares that tolling I-90 “…isn’t on the table and it won’t be,” since it would be unfair to force drivers using one bridge to pay for something they are not using.
Mercer Island employ-ees, students, residents and all who use I-90, from Seattle to Spokane, are owed the truth. Judy Clibborn’s mitigation proposal is no solution for Mercer Island, just as tolling I-90 is neither an answer for a pervasive shortage of transporta-tion funding or for traffic congestion. Funneling of funds from an existing interstate to fund another project sets no limit on expenditures, establishing a flawed precedent for the entire country. Piecemeal tolling, adding portions of roads to the tolling menu, will increase congestion as drivers shift routes seeking less expensive options. A better solution would be state and regional trans-portation funding pack-ages that spread costs more broadly, accompanied by trimming unnecessary expenditures.
I-90 users must not resign themselves to the unprecedented tolling of an existing interstate highway to fund another project. The decision to toll I-90 may have been set into motion, but we must let our legislators hear that such a precedent is unac-ceptable.

A little boy was asked if he understood the mean-ing of Easter. He replied, “Sure, that’s when the bunny comes out of the tomb hop-ing to see his shadow.”
Definitely a case of mis-taken identity. And yet the youngster’s confusion about the most significant week of the Christian calendar is not unique.
Holy Week seems a bit like the movie “Groundhog Day.” Every year, Christians observe the same thing. Palm Sunday. Maundy Thursday. Good Friday. Holy Saturday and Easter Sunday. The hymns are the same. The Scripture read-ings are the same. We do it all over again year after year.
But what is it all about, anyway? For the benefit of those Islanders who do not observe the Christian holi-days, consider Christianity
as a two-act play.In Act One, the Creator
seeks to communicate His love for His creation by coming into the world and taking the name Jesus (or Jeshua, meaning “the Lord saves”). Becoming skin and bones, the Almighty expe-riences the joys and sorrows of the human con-dition personal-ly (Christmas).
The events of holy week com-prise the Second Act of redemp-tion’s drama. This incarna-tion of Deity is praised for his miracles, demonstrating power over nature all the while alleviating human suffering. His teaching reveals the selfish inclina-tion with which everyone is born as he calls for repen-tance. People applaud Jesus as if he were a grand parade marshal (Palm Sunday).
Jesus, an observant Jew, proceeds to celebrate Passover with his closest friends. During the Seder he suggests he will give his life in order to provide the ultimate exodus. He will lead them from a captivity worse than slavery in Egypt (Maundy Thursday).
But Jesus’ popularity is short-lived. By the time palm branches carpet-
ing the cobblestone streets of Jerusalem have turned brown and brittle, the courtroom of public opin-ion has turned against him. Claiming to be “the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world,” Jesus is cruci-
fied on a Roman cross (Good Friday).
While his critics breathe a sigh of relief, his follow-ers are beside themselves. His lifeless body lies buried. His “truths,” seem-ing to be nothing
but lies. The disciples lock themselves behind closed doors fearing for their lives (Holy Saturday).
But you can’t keep this good man down. Death can-not confine Jesus to a grave. By coming back to life, Jesus proved that his sacrifice for the sin of humanity was complete (Easter).
Much like the repeated holidays of my Jewish neigh-bors’ calendar, Holy Week for Christ followers has a Groundhog Day repetition. But not without purpose and not without meaning. Christians live in the shad-ow of that meaning!

Islander’s art collection featured at BAM
Billie Jones Moffitt’s col-lection is on loan for the BAM’s “Maneki Neko: Japan’s Beckoning Cats – From Talisman to Pop Icon” exhibit, which is featured at the museum through August.
Moffitt, a Mercer Island High School graduate, donated the collection to the Mingei International
Museum, in San Diego, after 25 years of collecting.
Since the early 15th century, a f a b r i c a t e d cat with an upraised paw has been con-sidered a good luck charm in the Japanese culture. The show features a collection of over 150 cats, all made in the 19th and 20th centuries.
Moffitt’s parents, Jay and Mary Jayne Jones, still reside on Mercer Island.
Summer 2013 Mostly Music in the Park lineup announced
The Mercer Island Arts Council has released the summer 2013 lineup for Mostly Music in the Park.
Set in Mercerdale Park, the concert series features something for everyone, and this summer includes a special tribute to the Beatles in honor of the 50th anniversary of the group’s first album.

mer will only be held on Thursday evenings, due
to budget c ons t r a i nt s . Concerts will run from 7 to 8:30 p.m. except for the final concert, which will be held on Sunday, Aug. 25, at the Luther B u r b a n k Amphitheater.
The first concert will be on July 25,
featuring the swing band Portage Bay Big Band, followed by classic rock’s Dynamite Limbo on Aug. 1. The Cajun/zydeco band Swamp Soul will perform on Aug. 8. The popu-lar Beatles tribute band, Nowhere Men, will per-form on Aug. 15, while KoKo Joe will perform its classic and country music on Aug. 22.
The final concert of the summer will be on Aug. 25 at the amphitheater in Luther Burbank Park. The Russian Chamber Orchestra is scheduled to play.

Community news A Holy Week primer to prepare for Easter
The series on Mercer High School graduates who became winemakers contin-ues with Paul and Marilyn Portteus, owners of Portteus Winery, one of the pioneer wineries in Washington state. There were only 14 wineries in the state when they began in 1981. Now there are over 600.
Not only are they pio-neer winemakers, Paul and Marilyn are Mercer Island pioneers. As a young boy, Paul delivered the Seattle Times on the southeast end of the Island and fre-quented hydroplane driver Bill Muncey’s Thriftway before it became the South end QFC. Both Paul and Marilyn attended Mercer Island schools from kinder-garten. In first grade, Paul and Marilyn had a reading class together. Paul gradu-ated in 1967; Marilyn, in 1966.
They both moved onto the Island around 1952. Paul’s par-ents bought a former gov-ernor’s sum-mer home on East Mercer Way. Paul’s parents still live there. Marilyn Dehn’s family first lived in Shorewood and then moved to Lansdowne Lane. Marilyn’s dad came to Washington state to work on the B52 for Boeing; he later worked on the 747. Both of Marilyn’s parents have died.
“I grew up with wine on the table,” said Paul. “My father was introduced to wine in Belgium during World War II. In fact, there
was a Reporter article a few years ago about my father’s service in Belgium. He
marched well into his 80s with fellow soldiers, commem-orating the Battle of the Bulge.
“In addition, my Uncle Howard made beer and wine in his base-ment. Our fami-lies would join for Sunday suppers and enjoy his cellar
endeavors,” he said.When Paul was at Camp
Orkila, he received post-cards from his folks, who were vacationing in Napa Valley in 1961. Paul still has those postcards.
“In 1968 I left home and bought a houseboat on Northlake Way. Being underage and entertain-ing a lot, I set up a home brewery to supply my guests’ needs. In 1970 after my junior year at the University of Washington, I took one of the UW’s charter flights to Europe and spent four months on a motorcycle from London to Spain to Norway, ending in Amsterdam. I visited all the wine regions as well as testing the local beers. I bought Bordeaux in France for 13 cents a bottle and wine in Spain was 10 cents. Imagine that!”
For his 21st birthday, Paul received a suitcase full of wine from his parents. There were 21 splits of wine of vari-ous vintages from California and France.
“In the early ’70s, I made trips to visit friends in south-ern California, always stop-ping in Napa and Sonoma along the way,” said Paul. “So I guess wine was in my
blood!”Marilyn Dehn became
Marilyn Portteus in 1973, and the newly weds con-tinued visiting Napa and Sonoma, buying wine and enjoying the vineyards and the wine country.
“By 1977 we shifted our interest in wine to searching for an opportunity to join the wine industry. After reading reports in Seattle newspapers on pioneering wine grow-ing in our own Washington state, we changed our search from California to Eastern Washington,” Paul said. “We found the perfect vineyard site in the hills above the town of Zillah after a year’s research. We now have 74 estate acres of grapes and produce around 11,000 cases of wines, mostly reds.”
They grow zinfandel, san-giovese, syrah, petite sirah, cabernet franc, malbec, mer-lot, cabernet sauvignon and chardonnay. All Portteus wines are estate-bottled. Approximately 20 percent of the harvest is sold to other wineries.
Paul was once named one of America’s Great Cabernet Producers by Wine Enthusiast Magazine. The Rattlesnake Hills, where Paul and Marilyn planted their first grapes, was autho-rized as an official American Viticultural Area (AVA) in 2006. Seth and David, Paul and Marilyn’s sons, have joined the winemaking team.
The winery is open for tast-ings seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is closed on Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day. It is located in Zillah at 5201 Highland Drive and can be reached at (509) 829-

have a few seconds of fame in Merrill Gardens’ 20th anniversary video.
Residents from each of the company’s 56 senior living communities in nine states are featured. The video, produced to highlight each commu-nity’s unique character-istics, shows the seniors “dancing into the future.”

Each Merrill Gardens community was given a video camera and asked to submit a unique con-tribution in the form of a short video clip that was then edited into the final five-minute video mon-tage. Residents and team members are seen danc-ing in various locations around the country.
Merrill Gardens began operations with one com-munity in Seattle in 1993. Now more than 8,000 seniors reside at the 56 locations in nine states. Merrill Gardens has over 2,700 team members and many of them are also featured in the 20th anni-versary video.

Hendricks, a National Honor Society member, is the president of the Schools A g a i n s t Cancer Club at MIHS, where she is also the chief financial officer for Mercer Trade Inc. and a Running Start par-
ticipant. She volunteers with Young Life student leader-ship, Youth Task Force and Relay for Life, and owns
KayGee Photography. The daughter of John and Denise Hendricks, she plans to attend Chapman U n i v e r s i t y in Orange, California.
Kothari is the National Honor Society president at MIHS, where he is also a mem-
ber of the Mock Trial Team. As a rower for the Mt. Baker Rowing Club men’s varsity team, he has
achieved second place in the Northwest Region 8+ Boat. He has also been a member of the MIHS swim team. For his Eagle Scout project, he organized a men’s cloth-ing drive on the Island and
obtained more than 1,100 winter clothing items for the Seattle Union Gospel Mission. He has volun-teered around the grounds of the Mercer Island P r e s b y t e r i a n Church. In col-lege he plans to

Ten teams of stu-dents from West Mercer Elementary, Islander Middle School and Mercer Island High School com-peted in the Seattle Area Regional Destination ImagiNation Tournament on March 2 in Issaquah.
Each team had worked together since last fall in preparation for this com-petition, with the guidance of West Mercer teach-ers, Mr. Headlee and Mr. Reyes.
At the tournament, teams competed in mul-tiple varied challenges uti-lizing the core principles of the program, which are creativity, teamwork and problem-solving.
Six teams placed in the tournament, and the four first-place teams will continue on to compete in the State Tournament and represent the Seattle
Metro Area on April 6 in Wenatchee. Teams winning that competi-tion will move on to the Global Tournament, held in Knoxville, Tenn., dur-ing May.

Mercer Island football player to play in Italy in Global Bowl
Mercer Island High School quarterback Alec Bean will play in Italy this spring as part of the Team Stars & Stripes football team.
Bean, a senior, is the only player from Washington on the team and one of three quarterbacks who will play in the Global Bowl against the Italian U19 National Team on April 13 in Turin, Italy. The team will face the top Italian players at Primo Nebiolo Stadium, the home of the local club team Giaguari Torino.
Team Stars & Stripes features American play-ers from across the United States, from 10 high schools in six states.
Bean and the team will be in Italy in the week leading up to the game, traveling throughout Italy.
This year’s Team Stars & Stripes is coached by Catalina Foothills coach Jeff Scurran, along with coaches from across the country.
Mercer Island fourth-grade select team wins tournament
The Mercer Island girls select fourth-grade basket-ball team recently won the season-ending tournament for the Cascade League.
The girls competed in the gold bracket in the tour-nament, eventually beating the No. 1 seed EBC team for the championship. The final score was 23-20, after Annabelle Gersch hit a last-minute 3-point shot to give Mercer Island the win.
The team includes: Audrey Nordstrom, Niteeka Narayan, Charlise Barokas, Renee White, Annabel Gersch, Giselle Johnson and Molly Moffitt. The team was coached by Leo
Asuan.
MI 8th-grade team wins district basketball championship
The Mercer Island eighth-grade boys ETL bas-ketball team won the dis-trict championship during the first weekend in March.
On their way to the title, Mercer Island beat Puyallup 40-35 in the quarterfinals, followed by a 37-24 win over Bellevue in the semi-finals.
Mercer Island faced three-time defending cham-pion Bothell in the finals. The Islanders led the game throughout and won 40-36.
The team finished the season with a 16-2 league
record and was 24-6 over-all.
The eighth-grade team included: Jacob Evans, Jack Smith, Blake Swanson, Sami El Rafeey, Ethan Chen, Will Krause, Jaelin Tate, Shain Scott, Bligh Bjarnason, Justin Myers, David Sims and Jack Delay. The team was coached by Patrick Frost and David Kelley.
Island native named Pac-12 Player of the Week
Mercer Island native and Eastside Catholic graduate Matt Boyd was named a Pac-12 Player of the Week for Feb. 18-24.
Boyd, a pitcher, helped Oregon State defeat San Diego State, 2-0. He pitched for 8 1/3 innings, striking out a career-high nine bat-ters in the Beavers’ win. Boyd allowed five hits and
batters reached third base just once during his time on the mound. It was Boyd’s fourth start of his career. The team, which won all five games that week, is 8-0 this season, the team’s best start since 1962.
Boyd leads OSU with 13 strikeouts in 15 1/3 innings this season, with opponents hitting .196 off him. It is his first Pac-12 pitcher of the week honor.
