Mercer’s Theory Script Characters: Jane (Adoptive Mother) Cynthia (Adoptive daughter) Misc: Granny, Sister, Adoptive Representative Scene 1: Anticipatory Stage This scene takes place at a family gathering, where Jane shows up alone. The family is gathered around the dining table. Granny: Hey Jane, how are you doing? Why didn’t you bring Nicholas? Jane: Oh Granny, you know how that goes. We are not dating anymore. Jane’s sister: You know Jane, those new dating sites seem to work for a lot of people now a days. Have you checked out eHarmony? Jane is now at her house contemplating her day before going to bed. She flips through the eHarmony website but then decides to close the site. She starts to imagine herself holding a baby, and raising a child. She looks up a theory about mother and child. She has a big smile on her face imagining what it would be like to have a child. Scene 2: Formal Stage This scene takes place in the adoptive services office.

Scene 1: Anticipatory Stage

This scene takes place at a family gathering, where Jane shows up alone. The family is gathered around the dining table.

Granny: Hey Jane, how are you doing? Why didnt you bring Nicholas?

Jane: Oh Granny, you know how that goes. We are not dating anymore.

Janes sister: You know Jane, those new dating sites seem to work for a lot of people now a days. Have you checked out eHarmony?

Jane is now at her house contemplating her day before going to bed. She flips through the eHarmony website but then decides to close the site. She starts to imagine herself holding a baby, and raising a child. She looks up a theory about mother and child. She has a big smile on her face imagining what it would be like to have a child.

Scene 2: Formal Stage

This scene takes place in the adoptive services office.

Social Worker: Okay, it seems as though you meet all the criteria to adopt a child today.

Jane: Thats great! When can I meet her?

Representative: Shes actually right out the door. Why dont we go out and meet her?

Jane. Okay, sure.

She looks in the mirror and fixes her makeup and clothes.

Representative and Jane walk out the door and meets Cynthia.Jane: Hi Cynthia! My name is Jane. It is very nice to meet you. I will be taking very good care of you. You can call me Mom if youd like. Or mommy, or Momma.. whichever you prefer!

Cynthia: Hi Jane.

Jane: Okay. So what should we do first? Do you want to go to an amusement park?

Johnny: I hate roller coasters.

Jane: Okay. Thats fine.. I hate roller coaster too. Oh, how about some pizza!

Johnny: Im vegetarian.

Jane: Oh, okay. Well how about we get home and get you acquainted with your new home.

Scene 3: Informal Stage

This scene takes place in the living room of Janes house. Cynthia is watching a cooking show on TV.

Jane: Hey there, honey. What are you watching?

Cynthia: Sofia the First. Shes a princess. I like her.

Jane: That sounds like a very nice princess. Can you tell me more about her?

Cynthia: Yes, well her mother married the King who has two children. Now Sofia has a new sister and brother.

Jane: Oh, that sounds like so much fun. Tell me what else do you like to do ?

Cynthia: Well I like to look like a princess.

Jane: Lets see if we can make you a princess today!

Scene ends with Jane playing with Cynthias hair.

Scene 4: Personal Stage

Jane drops off Cynthia at school

Jane: Have a great day at school, Honey. I love you

Cynthia: I love you too Mommy. See you later!
