The father of modern medicine Hippocrates is oftenquoted as saying “Let food be thy medicine andmedicine be thy food”.

Sadly, however, our western food supply does notcontain therapeutic levels of nutrients needed topromote optimal wellness and few people areactually consuming, the minimum recommendedintake of 3 fruits and 5 vegetables a day.

Some 20 years ago the American MedicalAssociation (AMA) advised doctors that providedtheir patients ate a healthy balanced diet, there wasno need for added vitamins and minerals. However,in recent years, the AMA has completely reversedits position and now promotes the use of dailynutritional supplements, to ensure that patientsachieve optimal levels of health.

To date there have been over 100,000 paperswritten on the subject of antioxidants and theirpositive effects on health. Within the realm of anti-ageing medicine, antioxidants are at the forefront oftreatment and research.

Currently, the highest known source of antioxidantsis found in the Acai berry which grows at the top ofvery special Monocot palm trees in the Amazon.Due to the complete lack of pollution and the richorganic soil in which it grows, this little purple berryis a nutritional treasure trove which boasts an arrayof every nutrient needed to maintain optimal health.

In many parts of Brazil theAcai berry is consumed on adaily basis in a variety ofdishes. And despite exposureto high levels of UV rays,Brazilians have a lowincidence of skin cancer andoften look years younger thantheir actual age. Theantioxidants found in the Acaiberry protect the body from the ravaging effects offree radicals which damage healthy cells, promoteinflammation and accelerate ageing throughout thebody.

Dr. Edward H. Szachowicz is a Plastic Surgeonbased in Minnesota, USA, who after a long period oftime working in a trauma hospital doing facialreconstructive surgery, now runs an anti-ageingclinic where he conducts elective, facialreconstructive surgery.

As part of his preoperative and postoperativetreatment strategy, Dr. Szachowicz routinelyprescribes the antioxidant rich; functional food andnutritional beverage ʻMona.Vieʼ to be taken toreduce the incidence of infection and to promotewound healing after surgery. Mona.Vieʼs mainingredient is none other than the Acai berry, incombination with 18 other nutrient dense fruits fromall over the world.

Most of the information required for everyday living isobtained through our eyes, yet only 17 per cent of thepopulation had a comprehensive eye examination in 2008.

This figure is surprising given how important our eyesight isto everyday living. Good vision is essential for driving, playingsports and fulfilling work and school tasks which is why itʼs soimportant that children, teens and parents incorporate regulareye examinations into their general health regime.

During an eye examination, an optometrist will assess yourvisual clarity while also looking for signs of possible eyeconditions or disease.

Regular eye examinations can lead to early detection ofconditions and diseases. If eye health is monitoredthroughout life, there is an increased likelihood that visionloss due to macular degeneration, amblyopia (lazy eye) andglaucoma can be prevented.

Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is the leadingcause of blindness in older people in Australia. AMD is aresult of age-related changes in the function of the macular. The macula is the central part of the retina on the back ofyour eye that is responsible for seeing fine detail and colour.

Amblyopia (Lazy Eye) is a condition in which the messagesent from the affected eye or eyes to the brain is of lowquality, making the sight of that eye poor. A person withamblyopia will have poor vision that cannot be correctedsimply with spectacles.

Glaucoma is a condition in which the nerve cells whichtransmit information from the eye to the brain becomedamaged. This prevents visual information from getting fromthe retina in the eye to the brain. Glaucoma is oftenassociated with a build-up of pressure in the eye. The eye isfilled with fluid which is constantly being replaced. Ifexcessive amounts of fluid are produced, or if it cannot drainaway properly, the pressure inside the eye can increase. Insome forms of glaucoma, the pressure inside the eye canbecome extremely high, but in other forms the pressure mayremain normal.

Parents should be leading by example and monitoring theirown and their childrenʼs eye health on a regular basis.Parents should be confident that their childrenʼs eye health isthe best it can be.

Hello to you all. SergeantTravis McCARTHY is currentlyon well earned recreationalleave and so I have thepleasure of filling in for him. It ismy pleasure to write on localpolicing issues that are part ofour community.

Over the past few months therehas been concern from peoplein the community due to thecongestion in Caroline SpringsBlvd with special attentionbeing paid to the businessesalong the growing shoppingprecinct between The Avenueand Lake Street. Due to this concern there nowhave been No Standing signserected along Caroline SpringsBlvd to stop motorists fromparking outside these shopsand leaving their vehiclesparked in the carriageway. Thisarea is now being policed andfines of $117 will be issued tooffending vehicles. By using themulti storey undercover carpark you will alleviate theseissues and it will allow you tospend your money on moreimportant things.

Police are also continuallyconducting operations in theCaroline Springs area to curvethe seemingly ever growingissues with ʻHoonʼ driving andother related traffic offencessuch as unlicensed and

He also tells patients whohave trouble fitting it intotheir routine that they mighttry flossing earlier in theevening, or even during abreak at work. "Although thebest time to floss is beforebed, getting it done is moreimportant than what time it's done."

Some patients report they stopped flossing because theynoticed that their gums bleed when they floss. "Thatmeans there are germs and inflammation in there.Patients should continue flossing, and the bleeding willusually stop within a week or two," says Dr. Singh. Thosewho don't floss due to arthritis or lack of dexterity can tryspecially designed plastic holders for dental floss.

DO I HAVE TO FLOSS ?Despite advice, recommendations and warnings fromdentists about the importance of regular flossing, manypeople admit they still don't do it, and countless more doit only in the days and weeks before or after their 6MONTHLY checkups and cleans.

The reasons patients cite for not flossing are many, butlack of time is the most common. Many patients feel guiltyabout not flossing daily, and some abandon the practiceall together.

"I request that my patients floss once a day for control ofcalculus and tartar build-up on their teeth because plaqueis continually developing on your teeth, causing cavitiesand gum disease, recommends Dr Singh of CarolineSprings Dental..

Dr. Singh tells people not to give up-flossing even two orthree times a week has its benefits, and it's far better thannot flossing at all. "At least get in there and break up thosecolonies of bacteria and germs so they aren'taccumulating for quite so long."
