What a fortnight it has been! Let me give you a little summary. Ms Hyland and I travelled to Queanbeyan Education office last Thursday to meet with other executive staff, to listen to representatives from Community Services, Child Wellbeing and had a new online mental health resource intro-duced to us all. The information that we gathered will be very beneficial for the school when we assist our students and families in need. We secured a couple of good contacts and the online resource looks very useful indeed. On Wednesday Bev Stevenson and I took our 2 new Assets Management Unit (AMU) officers on a very detailed tour of the school (3 hours in fact). The pur-pose was to do a full condition assessment of the entire school so that maintenance jobs that have been outstanding for a while now and any new works, can be planned, funded and completed. These works will occur over the coming 12 months thanks to additional funding being released by the State Government to get all current and outstanding school maintenance jobs completed. Taking the jobs completed so far this year, the new roof works and the maintenance works coming, the school is looking at over 1.6 million dollars in upgrades and works to be realised by June of next year. What a tre-mendous result for our community and the effects will definitely be noticed by the students.

Principal Report Continued...
On Monday this week I announced to staff that the English position that has been filled temporarily at the school for a couple of years, will be filled permanently from the start of the 2020 school year. I had been in negotiations with staffing and will have a new teacher starting with us. I look forward to meeting our new teacher later this year when she comes to visit and introducing her to the school community at the start of next year. This week the fencing and scaffolding is being installed for the new roof. Work has begun on A Block. As the workers move around the school access to certain rooms and doorways will be seri-ously restricted for safety reasons. If you are coming to the school please use the main carpark and the main entrance. Work will continue from building to building until the end of the next school holidays. We will have a regular segment of photos in each newsletter to keep everyone up to date. I will kick off with the photos of the arrival of the equipment shed and the scaffolding partially set up. Finally last week’s Education Week activities organised by the SRC where fantastic. A student survey, environmental tree planting, a recycling program of plastic bottle lids and culminating on Friday with some very useful skills. I must say that my sessions on teaching students how to tie a tie where very well received by the majority of students. Most groups where even still busy when the next groups started turning up for their turn. A really enjoyable morning with the student body. Most students, including a couple of staff, did not realise how many tie knots there really are. Students where shown and then practiced the simple tie knot and the more skilled even learnt how to tie a Windsor knot. Well done to Riley Arabin who showed great skill being able to do the full double Windsor. For those that have forgotten the simple knot, here are the steps. Thankyou to all the staff that volunteered their skills for their own sessions. Hopefully now many students can iron a shirt, sew on a button, hem their trousers, change a tyre, boil a perfect egg and tie a tie. Ask them to show you their new found skills.

The Book Nook
Featuring this week in the Book Nook are the Children’s Book Council of Australia 2019 short listed titles. The CBCA reviews hundreds of titles published during the year and select 6 finalists across 6 categories. MHS purchases – all titles in the Older readers category selected titles in the Younger readers category selected titles in the Picture storybook category and has been doing so since 1992 in order to provide our school community with versatility of choice and to promote the goals of the CBCA – promote quality literature for young Australians support and encourage a wide range of Australian
writers and illustrators of children’s books and celebrate contributions to Australian children’s litera-
ture Titles are chosen based on strict criteria of quality writing, the development of characters and the inclusion of literary techniques. “Author and illustrator Elizabeth Honey has won many awards. Her novel '45 + 47 Stella Street and everything that happened' has won prizes in Australia and Europe, and her picture book 'Not a nibble!' won Australian Picture Book of the Year in 1997. 'There's nothing like seeing a shiny sticker on the front of your book,' she says. 'Recognition from readers - a letter, an email or an award - gives you a little warm feeling in your heart,' says Honey” http://education.abc.net.au/newsandarticles/blog/-/b/2034637/how-to-choose-award-winning-children-s-books All the titles are tagged with the keyword <shortlisted> followed by the year making them easy to trace through the library online database. So what are you waiting for? Go grab a great book for book week :)

LEARNING IN ENGLISH One of the exciting opportunities the English faculty have been involved in at MHS in 2019 is the Murrumburrah Integrated Learning Class (MILC) which includes one of our English teachers Ms Armstrong. During Education Week Ms Armstrong created digital posters with some of her stu-dents. The posters promoted Environment Week, one of the SRC’s education week activities. These can be seen in the photos on the following pages. Stage 5 English have been working with two teachers on their classes since term 2. The main class centres around the study of literature while the second teacher is focusing on developing literacy skills. In these classes students undertake wide reading of a book of their own choosing and work on a computer program designed to improve language and literacy skills. Additionally Mrs Middle-ton has been working with the students examining language in everyday situations. This has includ-ed examining newspaper articles and well known sayings of well-known people. The photos show Stage 5 Green working on interpreting the sayings of American businessman and presidential can-didate, Ross Perrot, who was known for his clever quotes including: “most people give up just when they're about to achieve success. They quit on the one yard line. They give up at the last minute of the game one foot from a winning touchdown”. Students put these ideas into language their peers could understand and they have been made in-to posters in the classroom. Year 11 Advanced English have been busy helping out Murrumburrah Primary School this year. We have sent down two groups to assist in the adjudication of the primary school’s public speaking competition and the recent spelling bee. It is always rewarding for the students to go back to their old primary school and to make a contribution to the learning of the students following them. Thanks to MPS for giving our students these opportunities. One thing we continue to work on is developing our students writing opportunities within and out of the classroom. We are looking at ways to work with the local Murrumburrah Writers Group and we continue to offer students opportunities to enter into writing competitions. This year we will be entering some student writing into the Lambing Flat Writing competition which closes at the end of term 3. Thanks to Ms Buttriss for her work with the debating teams in 2019. Congratulations to all of our debaters: Maria Raptis, Maddie Emms, Abbey Wade and Samantha Emms in the senior team and Bianca Burns, Xaydia Rowe, Jasmine Chesworth, Jayda Kelly and Melanie O’Farrell in the junior team. Debating is such a rewarding activity and we look forward to working with the students again in 2020. Happy reading! Ms Beck (HT English)

Students have used their literacy and coding skills to create an informational poster for Education Week. The focus of their project was to create posters that tackled Environmental issues we are facing. Using the MakeyMakey circuit board, students were able to create touch pads that al-lowed users to hear information and tips on how to look after our environment.

Education Week 2019—Every Student, Every Voice During Education Week, SRC held a variety of activities that involved the whole school. Activities included; A Student survey - giving every student the opportunity to have a voice about issues that
concern them. Activities based around peer mentoring. Students who had a talent in a particular area
(drama or voice) lead students in activities at break time, teaching them new skills and tech-niques.
Environmental education/concern - students were involved in planting new shrubs around the school grounds, viewing some environmental awareness videos in our IVY time. The SRC also launched our 'Envision Hands' campaign, where we are collecting plastic bottle lids to be melted down and used for bionic hands.
Life skills ‘Adulting classes’ activities included; * How to change a tyre - check oil and water * How to iron a shirt * How to sew on a button/fix a hem * How to boil/poach/scramble an egg * How to tie a Tie
Thank you to the staff and students at the school who got behind the initiative and supported the SRC this week. We hope the students learnt some new skills over the week.

Year 10 DAY On Tuesday 6th August, all Year 10 students participated in a day which focused on increasing their motivation and accountability during their schooling and also encouraging them to seek op-portunities after school. Robert Rutledge, (Branch Manager ACT & Southern NSW Region - ENGIE Services Australia) and Warren Mirtschin, (Area Sales Manager – Agriculture NSW with GRAYMONT), presented a fantas-tic talk with to students. Year 10 were pushed out of their comfort zone, put on the spot and made to really think about who they are as a person and how they can achieve to their full poten-tial in life. The students were then given information about the various Stage 6 courses that are on offer at Murrumburrah High School. Students were able to ask teachers questions about different subject areas as well as HSC and ATAR requirements. The students participated well throughout the whole day and each and every one of them walked away with some valuable life lessons. Below are a few of their comments about the day and the main message they received. “The main message I received from the session was to always show people respect” – Hayley Ches-worth “Stick to your work. Take up every opportunity. Always have a plan.” – Riley Arabin When asked what they could personally do to improve their future success in school, we had re-sponses such as; “Apply myself and manage disruptions” – Jordan Phelan “Keep my head down and get in and do the hard yards” – Elden Rowan “Ask more questions, study more and find a back-up plan” – Grace Shorrock I hope Year 10 take these important lessons with them through the rest of their schooling and into the future. IVY 9 IVY9 students had the opportunity to ask Year 12 students for advice regarding tips and techniques for senior schooling. Questions included: how did you know which subjects to select? how do you manage completing and submitting multiple
assessment tasks? what's a technique for completing an assessment task? why did you decide to complete the HSC? what subjects do you do? what's the difference between VET subjects and non-VET
subjects? do you have a study space at home? It was an enjoyable activity.
District Athletics Carnival Well done to all students who competed at the Riverina Athletics Carnival last week in Albury. Congratulations to Max Spackman who came 1st in Javlin and has qualified for State which will be held in Homebush in September.

Katrina Fanning Cup – Girls Tackle Football Carnival
On Monday 12th August, 13 brave Murrumburrah High School girls travelled to Cootamundra to take part in the Katrina Fanning Cup. It was a freezing day but that didn’t seem to bother our girls. Due to our low numbers we combined with Boorowa Central School to make up an Under 14s and Under 16s team. The day started off with the girls participating in various skills and drills where they learnt how to tackle correctly and how to brace themselves when being tackled. This session proved to be very beneficial for the games ahead. The Under 14s girls had a very successful day, winning all 3 games. The standouts of the day were Jasmin Chesworth, Hayley Hambrook and Regan Manton, who was our first try scorer for the day. The Under 16s played against the Barbarians which was a team made up of various schools. The girls played really well, showing some true grit in the tackles with Coralie Vasquez and Hunter Ings making a number of crucial try saving tackles. Loren Daley also showed some true form in the middle of the park. Overall it was a really successful day and the girls came away covered in mud but with massive smiles on their faces.
