Lourdes HospitalLourdes was originally known as Riverside Hospital which was founded by the municipality in 1905. The Diocese of Owensboro purchased the hospital in 1959 and in September of that year the Sisters of St. Francis of Tiffin, Ohio arrived to manage the facility. With the change in ownership came a new name: Lourdes in honor of Our Lady of Lourdes. The Sisters assumed sponsorship in 1963. In 1982, sponsorship was returned to the Diocese. In 1973, Lourdes moved from the downtown location to a new building located on Lone Oak Road in Paducah just off Interstate 24.

Lourdes enter into a management contract with Mercy Health System in 1989, and in 1991, the Sisters of Mercy became sponsors. The Sisters of Mercy joined other systems to form Catholic Health Partners in 1997. In July 2014 Catholic Health Partners underwent a name change to Mercy Health.

Lourdes serves as a regional referral center for a wide geographic region, including more than a dozen counties in western Kentucky, southern Illinois, southeast Missouri, and northwest Tennessee. More than 625 people have contributed to the Campaign for the Lourdes Hospice Care Center. Ray and Kay Eckstein were among the first donors to support the campaign, generously donating $1.5 million to the project. Once constructed, the center will bear the name, The Ray & Kay Hospice Care Center at Lourdes.

Lourdes partnered with the community to generate vital funding to build the Hospice Care Center and enhance hospice services for patients and families. They have established a clear goal -- that Mercy Health services will reduce variation and achieve at least Top Quartile performance as measured across all the STEEEP aims from the Institute of Medicine. These universal best practices aim for care that is Safe, Timely, Effective, Efficient, Equitable and Patient-centered.

Mercy Health is eager to collaborate with physicians as they continue to make their vision for healthcare into a reality by implementing these components of transformation:

They track their progress with regard to nationally designated quality measures, including the recommended elements of evidence-based care to prevent surgical infections and to treat heart attack, heart failure and pneumonia.

Their Performance Improvement Collaboratives, which are based on the Institute for Healthcare Improvement Breakthrough Series Collaborative model, bring together leaders and clinicians from throughout Mercy Health to achieve breakthrough progress in areas such as mortality and harm reduction, perinatal, emergency care, peri-operative and care coordination.

They are implementing CarePATH, a powerful electronic health record that enables coordinated patient care and up-to-date information-sharing among physicians' offices, the emergency department, and inpatient and outpatient hospital care teams.

Through the use of performance improvement strategies such as Lean Six Sigma, they are redesigning clinical processes to make them more efficient and effective and to increase our capability to provide safe care with a high degree of reliability.

Mercy Health has established executive academies that help their leaders enhance their ability to lead the way to safer, more effective care. They offer a Patient Safety Academy for hospital presidents, as well as a Physician Leadership Academy and a Nursing Leadership Academy.

They partner with the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), using IHI tools and resources and participating in several of the IHI’s clinical initiatives that bring together hospitals and physicians from across the country to learn innovative practices and share ideas and best practices.

Diversity & Inclusion: At Mercy, we believe that diversity and inclusion strengthen our culture, improve our decision-making and result in better care for all of our patients. Diversity and inclusion are crucial to our success as an organization and are grounded in our mission and core values. We welcome the different ideas, experiences, perspectives and talents of a diverse workforce. Improving diversity and inclusion throughout Mercy is directly tied to our health system’s 2009 – 2013 Strategic Direction, which includes the goal of attracting, developing and retaining a first-rate and diverse work force. We invite you to review Mercy’s Diversity/Inclusion 2009-2013 Strategic Plan, which is the main vehicle for achieving our diversity-focused goals. Also available for review is the brochure for Mercy Diversity and Inclusion entitled Fulfilling Our Mission: The Diversity Journey at Catholic Health Partners.

To help in promoting greater diversity and inclusion throughout our health system, each of our regional health systems has its own diversity council, as does Mercy's home office. The members of these Diversity Councils consist of a diverse cross section of regional associates who work together to raise awareness about the importance of diversity and inclusion and to plan and implement diversity- and inclusion-related activities and programs.

THE LOCATION

PADUCAH, KENTUCKY

Page 11: Mercy Health Lourdes Hospital, Executive Director Oncology Services Job Profile FINAL

Paducah, originally called Pekin, offers a history and culture as deep as the rivers that surround it, and is as beautiful and culturally diverse as ever. Located at the confluence of the Tennessee and Ohio rivers, Pekin was a mixed community of Native Americans and European settlers. This cultural interaction continued until William Clark, famed leader of the Lewis and Clark expedition, arrived in 1827 with a title deed to the land. He named the land Paducah and set out to design the historic city that exists today.

Paducah is the largest city in Kentucky's Jackson Purchase Region and the county seat of McCracken County, Kentucky. The population was 26,307 at the 2008 census. Twenty blocks of Downtown Paducah have been placed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is the hub for the Paducah Micropolitan Area, which includes McCracken, Ballard and Livingston counties in Kentucky and Massac County in Illinois; which had a population of 98,127 in 2006.

In August 2000, Paducah’s "Artist Relocation Program" was started to offer incentives for artists to relocate to its historical Downtown and Lower Town areas. The program has become a national model for using the arts for economic development, and has been awarded the Governors Award in the Arts, The Kentucky Chapter of the American Planning Association Distinguished Planning Award, The American Planning Association National Planning Award, and most recently Kentucky League of Cities' Enterprise Cities Award.

Lower Town, home of the Artist Relocation Program, is the oldest neighborhood in Paducah. As retail commerce moved toward the outskirts of town, efforts were made to preserve the architectural stylings, restoring the historic Victorian structures in the older parts of the city. The program helped that effort and became a catalyst for revitalizing the Downtown area. The Luthor F. Carson Center for the Performing Arts was also constructed. In September 2004 plans jelled to highlight Paducah's musical roots through the redevelopment of the South side of Downtown. The centerpiece of the effort is the renovation of Maggie Steed's Hotel Metropolitan, where legends such as Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Cab Calloway, Chick Webb's orchestra, B.B. King, Bobby "Blue" Bland, Ike and Tina Turner and other R & B and Blues legends polished their craft along what has become known as the Chitlin' circuit. Using this genre as a foundation, supporters hope to advertise Paducah's role in the history of American music.

Paducah's natural beauty has inspired artists from around the world to relocate here. The city's exciting riverfront is the site of steamboat dockings, fireworks, concerts and festivals throughout the year. The scenic 12-mile Dogwood Trail in mid-April is beautiful by day and glorious by night.

Paducah is also conveniently located halfway between St. Louis, Missouri and Nashville, Tennessee – so a quick trip to the city is never too far away.
