Christ assures, “Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.” (Matthew 5:7)

“Go and learn what this means, ‘I desire mercy (ELEOS), not sacrifice.’ For I have come to call not the righteous but sinners.” (Matthew 9:13)

“Take my yoke upon you and learn from me…” (Matthew 11:29)

Some faith traditions appeal to God for mercy and forgiveness on nearly every occasion God’s people gather for worship. For these, singing “The Kyrie” is an expected worship ritual, based on various

Scriptures (among them, Psalm 51:1, Psalm 57:1, Matthew 20:29-34, Mark 10:46-52, Luke 18:35-43). Traditional wording is: “Lord, have mercy upon us. Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us.”

All Christians can call on God with confidence, for our life experiences teach us that we can rely on this truth: God is merciful. “As the

eyes of servants look to the hand of their master, as the eyes of a maid to the hand of her mistress, so our eyes look to the Lord our God, until God has mercy on us. Have mercy upon us, O God, have

mercy…It’s far more than the re-vamped name of Creve Coeur’s hospital! Mercy is a God-given gift. One definition: “Mercy is when God does not give us what we deserve.” You’ve heard this definition out of me before, because it’s a personal favorite of mine!

In Exodus 33, God reassures Moses, “My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.” (precursor of Christ’s promise in Matthew 11:28 - “Come to me,… and I will give you rest”).

Moses qualifies Israel’s proposed exodus, “If you will not go, do not carry us up from here…” (verse 15).

God responds, “I will do the very thing that you have asked…” (verse 17)

Moses counters, “Show me your glory, I pray.” (verse 18)

God answers, “I will make all my goodness pass before you, and will proclaim before you the name, ‘Yahweh’; and I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious , and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy.” (verse 19)

A BLUE STAR THANK YOU to everyone who has helped me to realize my goal of playing trumpet with Blue Stars Drum and Bugle Corps. I am blessed once again to be playing in the Blue Stars’ horn line. Our 2013 Blue Stars’ show is entitled, “VOODOO.” Spring training will be May 24–June 20. Our corps will be touring the country June 21–August 10. I am pleased that many of you were able to share in the February 1 cheeseburger soup evening at church hosted by my family. I sincerely thank you for your financial gifts and for all of your expressions of support and encouragement! Each one of you is a blessing to me. With gratitude, Sarah Wilson

…FOR THE GIFT Carl and Marsha Ramey donated a wheelbarrow to church. Your gift will be put to much faithful use caring for this scenic patch of God's Holy Ground!

A SPECIAL THANKS ON THE recent Ivy Chapel workday on May 11 that benefitted from many participants, making for a very productive event. The Trustees were so pleased with the turnout and the resulting shortened list of chores that they've promised a respite from workdays for 'a while'...

Helping with everything from moving mulch to dusting air vents and caring for the memorial garden and fountain were: Ronn and Dottie Foster, Tom Glenn, Mark Gerdes, Sarah Heend, Earl Kreder, Gary Lindhorst, Linda and Steve Lowry, Frank Purviance, Brenda Otterson, Marsha Ramey, Russ Washburn, Ralph Weiland, Bruce Wilking and Don Wolff. We hope this list is inclusive and apologize if we missed any of the much-appreciated workers.

If you need pastoral care June 16-23, please contact Rev. Dale Bartels:

636-532-0540, EXT. 23 (church); 636-236-5797 (cell); 636-458-2894 (home).

June 16-22 will be our Alpha Omega Youth 2013 Summer Mission Trip to Joplin. Pastor Dan and additional adults will be accompanying our youth on this trip. While Pastor Dan is out of the area, Rev. Bartels (St. John’s UCC-Chesterfield) has graciously offered to be available for Ivy Chapel UCC Emergency Pastoral Care needs.

If needed, please contact Rev. Bartels.

mercy upon us; for we have had more than enough of contempt.” (Psalm 123:2-3)

God’s mercy is an amazing and enduring source of help. The Rev. Larry Peacock, Director of Rolling Ridge Retreat Center in Massachusetts, marvels:

“There is something deeper than trouble. It is mercy. God’s amazing grace. Carrying, lifting, holding us in all seasons.

There is something more powerful than despair. It is mercy. God’s amazing love. Seeing us through dark nights, waves of sadness, mountains of grief.

There is something longer lasting than pain. It is mercy. God’s healing touch. Bringing us hope, leading us to joy, teaching us to sing.”

(from Prayers for Hope: Words of Faith for Difficult Times by Peacock)

Trust in the steadfast love and in the eternal goodness of God. Go into the world, inspired by one of the Apostle Paul’s salutations. The opening of each of his Letters to Timothy bears this distinctive greeting: “Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.” Grace, mercy and peace, Pastor Dan

“Let your mercy come to me, that I may live…” (Psalm 119:77)

“If one part suffers, all the parts suffer with it; if one part is honored, all the parts share its joy.”

(1 Corinthians 16:26)

If you pray, pray more than ever today, for many people in the town of Moore are unable to utter a single word to God in their shock and sorrow. Their hearts are locked down today. Your prayer may be the prayer they would say if they could.

If you cling to God, cling more than ever today, for the trust of some people in Moore is as shattered as flattened schools and the bodies of children. Their arms are limp today. Your clinging might be the clinging they would do if they could.

If you hope, hope more than ever today, for some people in Moore are wondering with Job why they were ever born and whether life can be good again. Their eyes cannot find the horizon today. Your hope may be the light they would see if they could.

One of my friends often blogs about "Things I'm loving." I absolutely love this idea. Its such a great reminder of things to be thankful for. I often find myself getting so angry about such little things, but when you think about it, we all have it pretty darn good. So, I'd like to take the time to write down some "things I'm loving." I encourage you to do the same. When you have all the good things written down in front of you, the things you previously thought were "bad" turns out to be not that bad.

So, without further ado, Things I'm Loving:

1. A loving husband who supports me and my non traditional work schedule. I could not do all that I do without him. He works a full day, comes home, takes over Miller and makes dinner 2-3 times a week. A good dinner too.. not just microwaving tv dinners!

2. A crazy active child. I know that at times I'm overwhelmed by his energy, but I really am so thankful to have such a smart, happy, healthy, inquisitive child. And, he is the most handsome child ever.

3. A loving and supportive family. They may not live close to us, but they do whatever they can to try and be there for us when we need them.

4. A loving and supportive church family. You guys seriously are the most amazing people and like our family especially since we don't have family in the immediate vicinity.

5. A wonderful, funny and engaging choir to work with on a weekly basis. Seriously, go thank a choir member. They bring so much to worship. We work hard all year, and they never complain. I love you guys.

6. My students. My piano studio has swelled to over 25 students now. We just had our recital, and yes, there were definitely some times where I got a little teary eyed. I love each student as if they were my own and want to see them succeed so badly. I also enjoy watching their parents as they play something they never thought possible. I always push my students come recital time, and at times, it is hard. Students cry. I get frustrated, but the recital makes it all worth it.

7. The theater. Having the opportunity to introduce so many to the theater is

UPDATE: For many years our congregation has supported a ministry of affordable

housing, helping to fund and construct new homes in St. Louis City and County through Habitat for Humanity. This year our coalition of area UCC congregations elected to take on the rehabilitation of an existing home rather than help with new construction. While this year's project is taking longer to develop than in past years, we look forward to the new challenges and opportunities of working on a rehab.

Habitat has lined up a buyer for one of its rehab properties and she has acquired the necessary financing. We will be working with her to rehab a single-family brick house located at 420 Fassen Street in the Carondolet area of south St. Louis, MO. In its present configuration it has two bedrooms, one bath and approximately 1,202 square feet of living space. It also has an unfinished basement and a detached garage. The house was built in 1904. Because the house is likely to have lead paint, Habitat will hire a contractor to gut the inside of the house. So we are waiting on a schedule for that work. As soon as we have that information, the UCC Habitat committee will schedule the work of volunteers from the 25 United Church of Christ congregations involved in this ministry.

Part of our participation in this affordable housing ministry is financial. Our coalition strives to be recognized as a Habitat for Humanity Builder Sponsor ($65,000). Your financial support is greatly appreciated for this local mission work that has a great personal impact on the well-being of neighbors in need.

Extra yo-yos will be provided for those willing to give it a try. Come join the fun and welcome in summer. For information please contact Marsha Ramey at [email protected] or 636-405-2576.

Among our congregation's intentional acts of caring for God's earth this EASTER SEASON included: Memorial Garden (planting and tending flowers; putting our fountain into warm weather service); Vegetable Garden (tilling; planting; weeding; ongoing care); County Highway Clean-up (youth and adults picked up trash along "our adopted mile"); SLA Spring Gathering (4 Ivy Chapel ambassadors participated); MMS Conference Women's Retreat at Camp MO-Val (Ivy women participated); Mountain-moving! (a mountain of mulch, that is—moved from corner of our parking lot to locations all around church grounds; Matthew 17:20); One Precious Tree (on Ivy Chapel Workday, volunteers planted the red oak given to our congregation by our Missouri Mid-South Conference UCC). To God be the glory!

WATCH FOR MORE ON SURVEY

Thank you to everyone who took time to complete the Ivy Chapel congregational survey. We received 51 responses, most of which were completed online. The results will now be analyzed and used by the Council and the Marketing Committee to determine the core values of our church. These will be an essential part of our upcoming marketing efforts.

We will share some of the results and insights here in the Ivy Vine over the next few months.

If you have any questions or comments about the survey or how the results will be used, please contact Rich Heend, [email protected].

just amazing. I literally get the chance to grow the next generation of fine art supporters. We will never see the arts succeed if we don't encourage our children to appreciate and enjoy it.

8. Our house, food, water, indoor plumbing, clothes, air conditioning, heat, I could really go on and on. As I'm looking at this, I'm realizing that I have so many "things I'm loving," but it is getting rather lengthy. Maybe I'll continue the "Things I'm Loving" for July. Sure, I am tired. I am worn out, and I have to go give a child a bath, but let's face it, I have so much to be thankful for. I know I need to take some more time to thank the Lord for all the good things he has done in my life.

Anyway, summer is upon us and choir is on vacation. If you have any ideas to make summer worship more spectacular, let me know. I'd love to hear it. If you haven't received the summer music schedule, and you think you are on it, please email me for a copy. Otherwise, I'm doing two shows this summer. Its going to be one busy summer. If you are interested in seeing a show this summer let me know. I will be performing at the Fringe Festival with a one act musical premier about Asperger syndrome. It is really good, heartwarming and provides great insight into the mind of a person with Asperger syndrome. If children are more your thing, I will be performing Suessical, the Musical with Shrewsbury Community Theater in July.

Help the Tornado Victims!

Most of us can't imagine the emotional and physical devastation that the people and pets of Oklahoma must

be experiencing due to the recent storms and tornados: however, we can help. The UCC National Disaster

Ministries' has suggested several possible ways:

1. First and foremost, PRAY for the people and communities impacted and all those who serve as first

responder emergency personnel.

2. Make a gift payable to the United Church of Christ and mark in the memo portion "Tornado/storms", mail

to United Church of Christ, Financial Services, 700 Prospect Avenue E., Cleveland, OH 44115.

3. Make a gift payable to the United Church of Christ and mark in the memo portion "Tornado/storms"

then give to Sue Lindhorst in a sealed envelope and I will mail them to UCC, Financial Services.

4. - Make a secure on-line donation (go to http://www.ucc.org/disaster/) and scroll down to the

Donate Emergency USA Fund box. Put "Tornados/Storms" in the comment section.

Let those folks feel the love and generosity of Ivy!
