“Entering its sixth year, Giving Tuesday is a global day of giving fueled by the power of social media and collaboration.”

Celebrated on the Tuesday following Thanksgivingand the widely recognized shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Giving Tuesday kicks off the

charitable season, when many focus on their holiday and end-of-year giving. Since its inaugural year in 2012, Giving Tuesday has become a movement that celebrates and supports giving and philanthropy with events throughout the year and a growing catalog of resources.

Giving Tuesday connects diverse groups of individuals, communities and organizations around the world for one common purpose: to celebrate andencourage giving. Thousands of influencers join forces, collaborate across sectors and continue to shape, grow and strengthen the philanthropic movement across the country.

Giving Tuesday harnesses the potential of social media and the generosity of people around the world to bring about real change in their communities. It provides a platform for them to encourage the donation of time, resources and talents to address local challenges. It also brings together the collective power of a unique blend of partner—nonprofits, civic organizations, businesses and corporations, as well as families and individuals—to encourage and amplify small acts of kindness.

As a part of the Giving Tuesday local movement, Mercyhealth DevelopmentFoundation invites YOU, our donors, to make a donation to our programs and services so that we may continue to care for our patients and their families in a meaningful way.

“It opens your mind and yourheart,” Lori Holland says whenasked what motivates her to

volunteer at the House of Mercy HomelessCenter in Janesville. “It’s also verypersonal for me. I have been blessed witha pretty great life these days, but it hasnot always been perfect, and I can relateto issues which can cause homelessness.”Lori explains that she has family

members who are going throughstruggles. “In my observation, many of

the homeless we see arestruggling with mentalhealth issues (depression, low self-esteem or self-worth), causing them toself-medicate and

leading to addiction issues. This causes avicious cycle and for many, they fallbetween the cracks with insurance andother assistance programs. They havenothing, so having a warm and safe placeto sleep is important.” And, since Lorihas been affected by the disease ofalcoholism, she has a strong empathy for those who suffer from addiction. “I understand how people get there and I want to be a help to them.”So, it’s no surprise that Lori has made

it her mission to help others whose lifecircumstances have put them “out on thestreet.” “For many, this is their everyday, normal life,” Lori adds. Three years ago, shortly after she started

work as a Patient Account Specialist –Medicare Hospital Billing and Part-timeFront Desk relief at Mercyhealth, Lorisigned up to volunteer at the House ofMercy. Now, she volunteers every Sundaynight, staying overnight so there is alwayssomeone on site, and filling in as needed. Her duties include making sure residentscomplete their daily chores (a requirementto live at the Center), refilling personalsupplies such as soaps and paper products

(which are all donated), and performingother tasks that keep things runningsmoothly. Lori says there is currently a huge

need for volunteers, as the Center isalmost always at its 25-family capacity, and how challenging it is for staff tocover vacant volunteer shifts as well as their everyday duties. “I wouldencourage anyone to sign up, as it’s probably one of the most interesting

and fulfilling things I’ve ever done. I’vemet incredible people from all walks oflife and heard many of their stories. And, the feeling you get is 10 times betterthan the work you do, and that’s evenafter a bad night.”When she is not volunteering at the

House of Mercy, Lori enjoys riding amotorcycle and spending time with herfamily which includes her husband, Dale, four children, three grandchildrenwho are “the love of her life,” a Germanshepherd and a puggle. She also has apassion for working in her flower andvegetable gardens in Juda, Wisconsin, where they have a farmette. “I like toplay in the dirt,” she says.Since 1996, when Mercyhealth

opened the facility at 320 Lincoln Streetin Janesville, the House of MercyHomeless Center has provided shelterand support to more than 6,300 people. If you are interested in volunteering atthe House of Mercy, please contactBrooke Anderson at (608) 754-0045. ❖
