Research statement
I am a second language development and bilingualism researcher. More specifically, I look at the learning and teaching of English as a second language across the lifespan, both in terms of teaching methods and language learning outcomes but also the cognitive effects that ensue from it. I look at early English introductory programs at primary school level; (optimal) second language learning and teaching methods at secondary and tertiary level and foreign and second language attrition and retention. When a new language is learned, it exerts an influence on earlier learned languages. In my research I therefore also look at first language attrition and the cognitive effects that accompany the conflict resolution resulting rom language competition. Since 2018, I have been the PI of the Bilingualism and Aging Lab (BALAB), which focuses on bilingualism studies in older adults, most notably the effects of introducing a bilingual experience later in life: what are the cognitive and social effects of teaching older adults a new language? My research is not only applied in the societal relevance it carries, but also in that it applies insights from an array of disciplines: linguistics, cognitive psychology, cognitive aging, neuroscience, medical sciences, and second and foreign language pedagogy.

Teaching statement
I see university teaching to be inextricably linked to research: already at the BA level, students should see the research their lecturers do, to place their textbooks into perspective. I view teaching as fully on a par with research as to university staff’s premier tasks. In addition, being a female scientist, I am fully aware that I have a role model function for my female students and actively try to engage my most talented (female) students to become research assistants, on their way to becoming independent researchers themselves. Student evaluations for my courses are consistently good and I feel reflect my goal of constantly critically looking at and innovating existing courses, for instance by adding more recent research papers to the course readings list but also through constantly looking for new activating teaching methods. Holding the English linguistics chair of the English Language & Culture program, where most students initially opt for a literature path, I find it important to enthuse students for language science.

Knowledge valorization statement
I feel that as an applied linguist working on English linguistics I have the responsibility to share my research outcomes with as wide a range of audiences as possible and in that process make secondary school students choosing their tertiary education aware of the importance of language science and the modern foreign languages in general. My research topics are ideally suited for knowledge dissemination and directly touch societal issues: can you ever lose your mother tongue? Is earlier always better when it comes to English language education? What are the best ays to teach English at secondary school? What are the major challenges western society is facing the coming decades with an increasingly aging population, many speakers of whom have a culturally and linguistically diverse background? As such, I make a conscious effort to seek out opportunities such as radio and television appearances, but also enjoy smaller-scale activities, such as kitchen table conversations with the general public, pop-up lectures in the public sphere, and acting as knowledge consultant in various media. I carry out site visits to Bilingual program schools in the Netherlands as part of the accreditation process by Nuffic. Crucially, I often collaborate with the Scholierenacademie Groningen to engage in workshops aimed at secondary school students in the North.
