We humans have a tendency to categorize things. We like to fit ideasinto neat boxes and consider ourselves a certain type of person. I'm anintrovert. He's a sports fan. We're active people. There's an element of reassurance that comes from knowing who we are. Yet, there's alsosomething exciting about letting these strict identifiers dissolve. Maybeyou like reading a book at home and going out and socializing. Perhapsyou enjoy the opera and watching football.

Nowhere is it better to rid yourself of these limitations than out on thewater. Owning a Meridian opens up a world of possibilities, and takingtime to explore each of them leads to unexpected moments and lifelongmemories.

In this issue of Meridian Lines, you’ll read about owners who do just that. There’s the Boston-area couple who enjoy taking their 441 to Cape Cod'sProvincetown for adrenaline-pumping kite surfing, but are equally con-tent to bob lazily in Boston Harbor and watch the sunset.

The next time your inner explorer kicks in, consider following in the foot-steps of Darlene and Bruce Reuser. The couple recently traversed theGreat Loop and the Down East Loop on their Meridian. When your softerside surfaces, take a page out of Ray and Sarah Hilton's playbook. Theyuse their 441 to spend quality time with their kids and grandkids on thegorgeous waters of Charleston.

Meridian owners’ experiences are as varied as they are, but one thing thatwill never change is Meridian's focus on quality engineering, craftsman-ship, style and comfort. This commitment to excellence never wavers, sothat you can let loose and explore the many different sides of yourself.

Any Way You Want It

Work like a captain, play like a pirate.

That’s Kurt and Tracy Kaufman’s motto, and it couldn’t be more fit-ting. Kurt is a 777 captain for United Airlines and, now that theirchildren are grown, the couple spends much of their free time explor-ing the Chesapeake Bay on their Meridian 441 Sedan.

“The boat is definitely a happy place,” Kurt says. “Even though wehave a lot of fun on it, it’s very low-key, very relaxing.”

The Kaufmans’ three daughters recently flew the coop, with Alyssa(25) finishing up pharmacy school at Virginia Commonwealth Univer-sity in Richmond; Ashley (22) graduating from Virginia Tech andapplying to med school; and Savannah (18) just entering her freshmanyear at Christopher Newport University in Virginia. After their daugh-ters’ departures, the couple looked for a new activity to sharetogether. They have since made it their mission to explore as much ofthe Chesapeake as possible onboard their 441, named Wild Hare.

“Now that we are empty nesters, we are going to become serious pirates,”Tracy says with a laugh. “But we’re nice pirates.”

The Kaufmans purchased their Meridian from MarineMax Joppa, just north-east of Baltimore. Kurt, a former tournament water-skier and driver, wasused to smaller vessels—20-footers at most—but decided it was time to adda yacht to their small fleet for overnighting and hosting friends.

“One of the things we were looking for was livability,” he says, lauding thetwo staterooms and two heads of the Meridian 441. “You have all the con-veniences of home that you can move around on the water.” The flybridgestyle appealed to them for its roomy layout. “You’re not all over the top ofeach other,” he adds. “The Meridian has met all of our expectations. Thelivability has gone hand-in-hand with the entertaining. We didn’t have tosacrifice one to get the other.”

The couple was so impressed with what their Meridian could offer, theyeven convinced friends Paul and Joy Merski to purchase their own Meridian. As an airline pilot, Kurt knows a thing or two about being in the captain’sseat and says the 441 has all the bells and whistles. “I love the way theMeridian handles. It handles like it’s on rails on the water,” he says, addingthat the Zeus propulsion system makes it a cinch getting in and out of slipsor busy marinas. “It takes the guesswork out of it and practically does it all

on its own.” Kurt is quick to point out, however, that his pilot nature some-times propels him to do things the old fashioned way without the joystick, just for fun.

Though they reside in Fredericksburg, Virginia, the Kaufmans keep Wild Harein Baltimore where they have easy access to the bay and to their favoritehang-out spots. Annapolis is a go-to destination when the couple are in themood for a vibrant nightlife scene. “That waterfront area is just really richin that boating tradition, and the entertainment, bars and pubs are justgreat,” Kurt says. “It attracts a fun bunch of people.”

For a low-key weekend, the Kaufmans head to St. Michaels, on the bay’seastern shore. A quaint maritime destination, St. Michaels offers fantasticdining and shopping along with several inns and bed and breakfasts. “It’s kind of a quieter town,” Kurt says. “The restaurants and shops are second to none, and it ’s a favorite getaway with a lot of boaters on the Chesapeake.”

For Tracy, a second-grade teacher in Spotsylvania County, St. Michaels isperfect for browsing boutiques for marine-chic décor to personalize WildHare. “I have had a lot of fun decorating,” she says. “It looks like a little

model home. I’m very sentimental, so I like to collect things that remind usof our adventures.” In fact, St. Michaels is where she first discovered theircherished motto on a decorative plaque.

Owning a Meridian has opened many doors for Kurt and Tracy, including opportunities to meet other boaters at MarineMax outings, such as weekend-long events to St. Michaels, one of which the couple attended this past fall. The outing featured boat christenings, docktail parties and dinners wherefellow water lovers could share in the camaraderie of being part of the largerMarineMax family.

Meridian Lines Magazine | 13

“The people are so genuine and fun,” Tracy says. “We all have the samemindset and good attitudes. There ’s no drama. We have made friends withsome very authentic people.” Kurt adds: “With MarineMax, you wind upwith lifelong friends rather than just a salesman who sells you a product andmoves on.”

Soon, the Kaufmans will move Wild Hare south for a spell to Solomons Island, where the Chesapeake and the Patuxent River meet in CalvertCounty, Maryland. Then they’re planning on moving it down to Florida’seast coast for a few months over the winter. “My plan is to never have towinterize the boat,” Kurt says with a laugh.

For Tracy, simply being onboard delivers all the fun she needs. Whetherheading to a new place or sticking around old haunts, as long as she ’s onboating time, she ’s happy. “I call it my chill place,” she says. “I get on thereand I don’t think about anything else. I can totally decompress. It’s good, clean therapy.”

“The 441 is our fifth boat and our third Meridian,” Ray says. “The yachts are so livable. We love them.”

ALL IN THE FAMILYSarah and Ray Hilton (above) love their Meridian for its ampleroom to fit their kids and grandkids.

The couple ’s 441 Sedan Bridge is named Sarah Ann for Ray’s bride ofmany years. “We ’ve been married since we were teenagers,” Sarahsmiles. Perhaps fittingly, the Hiltons live in romantic Charleston, the landof Spanish moss and horse-drawn carriages. After serving in the military,Ray decided to take up study at dental school in South Carolina. Today,he and Sarah work together—he as the doc, she as the office assistant—at their own practice, Hilton Dental.

One might think Sarah and Ray were always raised on boating, giventheir love for cruising. But, although Ray’s dad always enjoyed boats, thecouple ’s on-water life began largely after they got married. The militaryfates found them living near the water when they were stationed in Gro-ton, Connecticut, and Miami, piquing their interest in the cruisinglifestyle. After their move to Charleston, the couple started frequentinglocal boat shows where they became acquainted with Meridians. Theywere deeply impressed with the comfort and layout of the yachts.

Soon enough, these boat show visits led them to local Meridian Yachtsdealer Rick Hall of Hall Marine. “We ’ve bought all of our Meridians from Hall, so we ’ve worked with them for many years now,”Ray says. “They have just taken good care of us. They know their prod-ucts, and the service is amazing.” As for why a Meridian, the answer isbound up with their ever-expanding family. “The Meridians just have the most livable layout,” Sarah says. “They fit our family, our kids and grandkids.”

Lucky for those kids and grandkids, they live close by and can enjoy theMeridian with Sarah and Ray. The Hiltons’ daughter, Denise, and herhusband, Chadwick, live right in Charleston with their boys, Thomas(11) and Lee (6). The Hiltons’ son, David, and his wife, Melissa, live astone ’s throw away in Charlotte with their three children, Jackson (7),Luke (4) and Anna Caroline (2). “The grandkids really like to spend thenight on the boat. It ’s an adventure for them,” Ray says.

“The 441 is great because we can take out just a couple of the kids or thewhole family,” Sarah adds. “The little ones like to ‘claim’ the boat astheirs.”

The grandkids aren’t the only ones who love staying on the boat. Sarahand Ray’s favorite memories are often formed onboard, including acruise to Beaufort, South Carolina, for a family wedding. They cruisedright down from Charleston, explored historic Main Street, famous forits leather goods, and tried some wonderful restaurants.

With luck, they’ll have more time to pursue some of their bigger cruising dreams in the coming years. “It’s tough to take time off as adentist,” Ray shares, “but we would love to take the Intracoastal all theway down to Florida or cruise to The Bahamas.”

Their home of Charleston has limitless options itself for explo-ration, including historic churches, plantations and gardens aroundthe city. Patriot Point Naval and Maritime Museum, one of their favorite attractions, features an aircraft carrier, destroyer and sub-marine that are open to the public. Visitors can also catch militaryreenactments and weapons demonstrations on special holidays. It ’s

WORLD TRAVELER The dewy hillsides of Scotland starkly contrast with the bright blue skies and aqua waters Meridian owners hopeto experience on every outing. not all pomp and circumstance, though. The Hiltons enjoy the local base-ball team, the Charleston RiverDogs—owned in part by actor BillMurray—from the water too, as the stadium abuts the Ashley River.

“The Meridian is almost like having a condo on the water,” Ray says.“The flybridge gives such excellent visibility. It ’s totally heated and air-conditioned. You can go up there on the hottest, swampiest day and stillhave an amazing time.” Sarah couldn’t agree more about their favoritefeature. “It ’s a wonderful place on the boat to eat and hang out. Every-thing you need is up on the bridge.”

The Hiltons credit their 441 with helping them not only discover new places, but also meet new people, particularly at their home base, Ripley Yacht Club.“We’re really friendly with the folks at our marina,” Ray says. “Some peo-ple live on their boats. You get to be like neighbors. It’s really nice.”

With a surplus of friends, a large family and endless cruising possibilitiesat home and beyond, Sarah and Ray can safely confirm: there ’s no suchthing as too much of a good thing.

AT SEA, AT HOME The Hiltons enjoy their home city from a new view—onboard their 441. The Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge(above) provides a picture-perfect backdrop.

“Our marina’s location enables us just a two-week run to either Canadaor the Bahamas,” Darlene gushes. “These days, we live on the boat forabout six months a year. We are always exploring.” And the Reusersaren’t all talk. These two have accomplished more cruising over the last10 years than many people ever dream of.

As the “II” in Miss Darlin II implies, the 580 is the Reusers’ second Meridian.Bruce bought their first—in fact, the very first Meridian 459 off the line—after falling in love at the Seattle Meridian Yachts factory in 2007. He namedit Miss Darlin for Darlene, and the couple accomplished their first majorcruising adventure that year: America’s “Great Circle Loop.”

For ambitious cruisers looking for a new challenge, the Great Circle Loopis a continuous waterway that encircles the eastern portion of NorthAmerica, stretching all the way down to the Bahamas and up to Canada. It includes the Atlantic and Gulf Intracoastal waterways, the Great Lakes, the Canadian Heritage Canals and scores of smaller inland riversthrough the South and Midwest. In short, it is an extremely varied and rewarding cruise.

But Bruce and Darlene were ready for more. “After doing the Great CircleLoop, we wanted to find a Pilothouse to reduce our weather exposure,”Darlene says. “We already knew that Meridian gave us everything wewanted and more onboard.” After a visit to their local MarineMax, MissDarlin II came into the Reusers’ lives, and the rest is history.

The couple ’s love for cruising has only grown with their second yacht, and they’ve taken their 580 to many islands of the Bahamas, includingThe Abacos and The Exumas. Still, they longed for another great adven-ture. Two years ago they found it, embarking on the cruise of a lifetime:the “Down East Loop.” This spectacular cruise encompasses much of theNortheastern United States and Canada, with each cruiser making somedetours for special sights of personal interest along the way. The Reuserscount this loop as one of their favorite memories and gave Meridian Linesan inside perspective on this incredible adventure.

To understand Bruce and Darlene Reuser’s adventurous boating philosophy, oneonly need look as far as their marina arrangement. While the couple lives inCloverdale, California, their beloved Meridian 580 Pilothouse, Miss Darlin II, callsNew Johnsonville, Tennessee, home.

CIRCLE GAMEBruce and Darlene Reuser and their fellow Meridian-owningfriends traversed the Rideau Canal (top center) and passed theStatue of Liberty on their Down East Loop trip.

The couple kicked off their journey with a Meridian Owners Rendezvous inWrightsville Beach, North Carolina, where they met up with other Merid-ian enthusiasts to prepare for the great trip North. Close pals Pete and LynnWalton and their boat, Kiwi II, joined the Reusers for this loop journey. After catching up down south, the crew set off northward up the Intra-coastal. The first stop on the docket was Kingston, Ontario, where everyonecruised up the Rideau Canal to Ottawa. A World Heritage Site, the Rideaudid not disappoint. The group particularly enjoyed the climax of the Rideau, the Flight of Eight, an architecturally stunning stair-step set of locks. “Al-most all of the locks are still operated by hand,” Darlene says. “It was abeautiful and relaxing trip.”

From there, the friends cruised the Saint Lawrence River through Montrealand Quebec City. “The Saint Lawrence is a beautiful river—wide and deep, with a vast array of sea life, including seals and many types of whales,” Dar-lene says. “As you travel away from Quebec City, the river becomes moreserene and peaceful as the towns and villages become few and far between.”The quiet stretch seemed to the Reusers like the perfect spot to admire someof the local animals. But, as with many adventures, there were some unex-pected hiccups along the way.

O CANADAThe Great Circle Loop provides stunning views both urban(Quebec, above) and natural (Percé Rock, below left). South ofthe border, Darlene gets her hands on some lobster (below.)

“We left our marina in a light drizzle and took off for our next planned stop, which was the Saguenay Fjord,” Darlene shares. “By the time we arrived, the winds were howling with gusts up to 50 miles per hour. The Kiwi IIfound space at the marina, but Miss Darlin II had to find space in thecrowded harbor. The next morning, our plan was to pull up the hook and doa little whale watching. You can imagine our surprise to find the anchor wedropped in 18 feet was now sitting in just 2 feet of water!”

Thankfully, with a team effort and a few dips in the freezing water, thefriends pulled into a deeper cove. Happily, the day turned out to be beauti-ful, and the group was treated to a show by local whales.

From there, the group set out to Riviera de Madeline, a small French-speakinghamlet. They sampled some delicious poutine, and built a fire on land withnew-found friends, enjoying s’mores under the stars. They cruised along theGaspe Peninsula, taking pictures at storied Percé Rock, one of the most pho-tographed natural rock formations in Canada. Onward still, they went to

profiles

Prince Edward Island where they rented bikes, visited the community onwhich the novel “Anne of Green Gables” is based and took a side trip to lovelyBras D’Or Lake in Nova Scotia. The next stop, Halifax, was a favorite, and theReusers recommend it to boaters who like a side of maritime history with theircruising. “The Maritime Museum there is really interesting with lots of factsand articles from the Halifax explosion and the Titanic,” Darlene says.

Thankfully, the crew encountered no further trouble, and their return to theU.S. proved just as fun as their adventures abroad. “We crossed the Bay ofFundy and, as we approached the U.S. side, we could see that it was filledwith lobster pots as far as you could see,” Darlene recalls. “After we clearedcustoms, we purchased lobsters from a fisherman on the dock and had afeast!” Bellies full, they worked their way down the coast, visiting Boston,Martha’s Vineyard, Nantucket, Newport and, ultimately, New York City. For some, so much cruising might seem like a crazy challenge, but for theReusers, that’s what spending time on the water is all about—making newfriends and exploring new places.

Raymarine (a part of FLIR, the world leader in thermal imaging technology) has developed one of the most advanced night visioncameras. The T Series camera creates pictures by detecting and displaying small changes in heat, rather than light. Every object, evenice, generates thermal energy, some of which might not be invisibleto the naked eye. The Raymarine thermal night vision camera is capable of detecting that energy and turning it into easily under-standable video. Enjoy enhanced visibility and situational awarenesswhile boating at night, easier docking in low light, improved naviga-tion, and increased boat security and surveillance.

Plus, with a convenient thermal camera application available rightfrom your Raymarine Multifunction Display home screen, you cancontrol the system with the touch of a finger. The application can bedisplayed full-screen, or in a window alongside other navigation datasuch as electronic charts or radar.

Boating at night has always been a unique experience. With Raymarine thermal night vision technology, it’s uniquely empowering as well.Visit raymarine.com for more information.

Perhaps it comes as no surprise then that, as of press time, the Reusers areon the hook again. They have left their home marina on a cruise of theirown design: down the Tennessee River to the Ohio, then on to the Mississippi. Reporting to Lines from the water, Darlene says, “The Mississippi River is wild and commercial! It is more of an adventure thana joy ride but it makes you feel like you are looking through a secret window that most people never see. We spent all day yesterday passingtowboats pushing their barges with all the commodities that keep America moving.” Tonight, she reports, they’re in Mud Island, Memphis, enjoying cool blues and hot barbecue.

What exciting mysteries the rest of this trip holds for the couple, no one can guess. Luckily, that’s exactly what Bruce and Darlene love aboutadventuring on their Meridian.

For Boston-area residents Rand Currier and wife Paula Foley, there’s only one wayto get to Cape Cod: by boat. The couple’s Meridian 441 Sedan Bridge, named theDesignated Diver, provides access to numerous locations and experiences alongthe Massachusetts shoreline to fit their fun-loving lifestyle.

Instead of sitting in five hours of traffic from Boston to the Cape, theycan take their time whale watching and catching fish en route instead.“We entertain, we fish, we use it as a transport vehicle,” Rand says of the441, which they purchased from Boston’s Russo Marine. “It just haseverything we need. It ’s perfectly set up.”

Naturally, the couple often uses Designated Diver to go scuba diving.Rand has been a diver for most of his life and remembers his father tak-ing him out at an early age. Paula got her certification about eight yearsago, and the pair have been diving together ever since. “I like the quiet of

being in a whole other atmosphere and world,” Paula says. “It ’s not likeanything you can describe until you’re there.”

Their favorite diving grounds near Rockport, Gloucester and Salem areprime for Paula’s favorite, lobster. But the three towns provide plenty ofother recreation when not underwater. A hike through Rockport ’s Halibut Point State Park offers quintessential New England views of oldlighthouses and crashing waves. Gloucester is known for its beautiful vistas, as well as the artsy feel of its streets. Salem, the famous location ofthe 1692 witch trials, is the couple ’s favorite destination for “HauntedHappenings,” a month-long spooky Halloween celebration.

When the couple heads south onboard Diver, they swap their scuba gearfor kite surfing. Rand calls the stretch from Martha’s Vineyard to

The dogs don’t even wait for the dinghy to hit the beach before they’reoff and running. “I think they like to go to Provincetown and Long Beachmore than we do,” Rand jokes.

After an eventful day along the Massachusetts coast, Rand and Paula headback to Boston Harbor for quick access to restaurants and nightlife. Theyparticularly enjoy the Seaport District, where they say dinner at Legal SeaFoods or the Empire Restaurant and Lounge is a must. “It ’s a new, vi-brant part of Boston,” Rand says. “They built a series of docks there, soit ’s convenient.”

Though often on the go, their end goal is always the same: relaxation.Sometimes, just being onboard their Meridian is all the escape they need.“Maybe we ’ll hang out at one of the islands and drop the fishing lines in,”Paula says. “Or we ’ll have appetizers and take in the sunset.”

It doesn’t matter, she explains. Wherever they go and whatever they doaround the Cape, “the Meridian is a great place to not set an alarm clockor have an agenda.”

A truly exceptional service refuses to be content with the way thingsare. Rather, it insists on always looking for ways to improve and develop offerings that are consistently bigger and better. NBOA Marine Insurance, which has served yacht owners for more than 30 years, has come up with a policy that proves it's far from restingon its laurels.

The Ironshore Premier Watercraft Policy, developed in conjunctionwith Ironshore Indemnity Inc., provides coverage for boats valuedup to $750,000—perfect for small vessels and larger pleasure yachtswith its broad range of coverage options and competitively low premiums. The plan includes options such as Sport Fishing Endorsements, Occasional Charter, and Captain and Crew Liability.

“In working with the team at Ironshore, we’ve put together a pro-gram that we believe is the best available option for the recreationalboater out there today,” says Jeffrey Berndt, Senior Vice President atNBOA. “Having been involved in the marine insurance business forover 30 years, I think this is our finest effort.”

Everyone wants to own a private island, but unless you're JohnnyDepp or Leonardo DiCaprio, that dream is unlikely to become a reality. Luckily for Meridian owners, there is an alternative thatjust might top a personal island. Hop onboard your Meridian—aprivate and stunning haven itself—and cruise to one of severalFlorida islands reachable only by boat. Leave the crowds, touristsand traffic behind, and soak up true peace and quiet.

DRY TORTUGASSeventy miles west of Key West, you’ll find 100-square miles of sparklingblue water and seven small islands. Dry Tortugas National Park’s mostimmediately recognizable feature is Fort Jefferson, a hexagonal brickfortress taking up one of the islands. The largest masonry structure in theAmericas, Fort Jefferson saw active use until the 1930s. A guided tour takesabout four hours and includes the opportunity to snorkel with providedequipment. If you’d rather bring your own snorkeling gear, the Dry Tortu-gas’ vibrant barrier reef offers several first-rate dive sites: the Windjammer,an iron-hulled ship that sank in 1901 after hitting the Loggerhead Reef;Texas Rock, which offers ideal photographing opportunities and plentifulsea life; Fort Jefferson’s moat wall, a magical experience at twilight; and Little Africa, a shallow, protected area suitable for kids and adults alike. Obtain a free boat permit for your Meridian at the park headquarters at Garden Key. drytortugasinfo.com

ELLIOTT KEYThe northernmost point of the Florida Keys, Elliott Key offers a sense of true remoteness (though a large open grass area is used for helicopter landing in case of emergency). Pineapple farming once thrived on the island, which now primarily hosts campers, picnickers and hikers who wantto get away from it all. No general store and no garbage collection meansguests must provide for themselves and leave the island as they found it.Dock your Meridian at any one of the harbor’s 36 slips, which have anovernight docking fee of $25, and spend a night under the stars. In the daylight hours, take a dip in the water from your yacht or head to the island’s designated beach area. STILTSVILLE IN BISCAYNE NATIONAL PARKOkay, Stiltsville isn’t exactly an island. But Meridian owners won’t want tomiss this unique bit of history off the Atlantic Coast. In the early 1920s, several Floridians built a dozen or so get-away homes on the flats at the tipof Key Biscayne. Legend has it that many of these colorful shacks helpedrum-runners smuggle in their goods during the Prohibition years. Eventually, this saltwater community of sorts grew to nearly 30 shacks, including onebuilt by Captain Eddie “Crawfish” Walker, who sold bait, beer and chilau, his special crawfish chowder. Having weathered several hurricanes andyears of debate between owners and the government, the smattering ofperched homes is now managed by the Stiltsville Trust. You may take in theseven remaining painted beauties from the bow of your Meridian, but besure to contact the Trust if you’d like to access or rent one of the homes.stiltsvilletrust.org
