We have had a wonderful start to the term, welcoming some new enrolments and supporting our 2017 Kindergarten children and families to have a smooth start. It has been so wonderful to see over 50 smiling little faces ready to start their primary school learning journey at our wonderful school. Following recent planning days and analysing parent, student and staff survey data that was collected last term (this will be shared in our Annual School Report), we have decided to re-introduce our Newsletter, in a new format. We will be trialling having two Newsletters per term, one in Week 1 and one in Week 5. These Newsletters will be sent home on the Friday. Permission and information notes will also be sent home on Fridays when required. Whilst we will endeavour to send all notes home on a Friday, some may be sent home on other days when required to go out with short notice. Maintaining up to date and effective communication can sometimes be challenging as a result of having 415 students and 350 families attending our school. We have a large, busy school that works hard to offer many varied opportunities. Coordinating these, often while liaising with other busy schools and organisations, not to mention working around the weather, can at times mean dates and activities change at short notice. Whilst we will be sending out a Newsletter to give an overview of key events, teaching and learning programs, dates and initiatives, sometimes dates and events may change. When this is the case, updates will be posted on Facebook and/or School Stream. With many notes coming home, and with us wanting to keep our Facebook site, School Stream app and Web Site up to date, having a Newsletter every 5 weeks will ensure that we can keep all methods of communication as up to date as possible without taking too much time away from planning our great activities and supporting your children. We hope you like our new Newsletter and that it gives a clear insight into upcoming events and programs at our innovative and engaging school. While it has been sent home as a paper copy this time, to avoid wastage and to support our environmental education messages, future Newsletters will be available on our web site and will be linked to School Stream and Facebook only. Please contact the office on (02) 6495 1266 if you are unable to access the Newsletter via any of these methods. School Communication: Our varied forms of school communication will offer families access to the following information: School Newsletter: Will include an overview of upcoming events, activities, key dates (particularly in Week 1 when a Term calendar is outlined), policy changes and Stage News. Library, Japanese, Art, Sport, Technology and Health News will also be included when relevant. School Stream: Will address calendar changes and will contain links to Newsletters, and digital permission notes. This app will also allow us to send digital alerts and messages to families, as well as allow families to contact us regarding positive feedback, concerns and absences. Facebook: This public site is for sharing positive stories, photos, event reminders and for promoting the amazing things students, families and staff are doing at our school.

2016

Principal’s Messages: Welcome to Term 4! With many notes coming home, and with us wanting to keep our Facebook site, School Stream app and Web Site up to date, having a Newsletter

every 5 weeks will ensure that we can keep all methods of communication as up to date as possible without taking too much time away from planning our great activities and supporting your children. School Communication: Our varied forms of school communication will offer families access to the following information:

School Web Site: All of our permission and information notes can be accessed via the Handouts section. The calendar will show a view of coming events. A wealth of information about our Department of Education, public schools, Merimbula Public School, staff, policies and detailed news stories can be found on our web site. Our School Plans, Annual School Reports and information about staff and programs can also be accessed. Important Dates/Calendar Items: Please remember that in a busy school we can have unavoidable external and internal interruptions that will require events to change dates/times. To keep up to date with what is happening, please download our School Stream app or check Facebook regularly throughout the term for updates and alerts. Class Timetables and Extra Curricular Events: When relevant, usually at the beginning of each term, our Newsletter will let you know when regular extra-curricular (music rehearsals, sport team training, and non-playground lunch activities) occur throughout the week. Information regarding particular extra-curricular events will mostly be shared via permission and information notes. Sport and Performing Arts notes are grouped separately within the Handouts section of our web site. These notes are only sent home to participating students. How Will I know What Notes Go Home? Each Friday we will put a post on Facebook to let you know which notes have been sent home. How Will I Know What Is On Each Week? You can check the Newsletter, School Stream or Web Site Calendar to see what is on each week. Each week we will also post, via Facebook, a list of the week’s key events. The “Big Events” taking place will be outlined in the school Newsletter. Staffing and Staff Leave – Term 4: Thank you to Mr Unicomb for supporting Tanja Public School by relieving as Principal there at the end of Term 3. The feedback has been so positive and the Tanja community and Principal were very appreciative of you using your talents to lead and manage their school at short notice.

Some staff will be taking leave in Term 4. I will be on leave from October 13 to November 4.

Ms Bain will be Relieving as Principal from October 13-18, with Mr David Willis teaching 6B and Mr Adam Hughes Relieving as Stage 3 Assistant Principal. From November 16 to 18 Ms Bain will be on leave. Mrs Adele Mackey will be teaching 6B during this time and Mr Adam Hughes Relieving as Stage 3 Assistant Principal. The following classroom teachers will also be taking leave: from November 24 to December 14, Mrs Lisa Kellaway will be taking leave (replaced by Ms Lauren Dixon on 6K); from December 6 to 14 Mrs Beth Smith will be on leave (replaced by Ms Ashley Braden on 3S); from December 12 to 20 Ms Fiona Beasley will be on leave (replaced by Mrs Dot Green on FB); from November 9-December 20 Mrs Kate Shook will take leave (replaced by Mrs Mary Pearce); and from December 12 to 16 Mrs Jenni Smith will be on leave (replaced by Mrs Erna Gaynor on 1S). School Administration and Support Staff Case Study: On Tuesday I had the privilege of travelling to Sydney with Mrs Jenny Smith (our Administration Manager) and Mrs Kelly McCormack (Learning Support Officer FB). We were invited to speak with the Presidents and coordinators of a range of Departmental groups and advisory committees on best practice in supporting the professional learning and development of school support staff. I am very proud that our school was selected to showcase our ‘best practice’ and share the wonderful things the support staff at Merimbula Public School are doing to empower our children to be the best that they can be. New resources for schools will soon be rolled out following our input and participation. I hope you enjoy our new Newsletter and Term 4! Ms Michelle Hulme, Principal

Year 3 students can apply to be a Junior House Captain; Year 4 students can apply to be a: Library, Bus, Flag or Technology Monitor; and/or House Captain (or Vice Captain); Year 5 students can apply for all positions that Year 4 students apply for, as well as a School Leader Position. Students interested in a range of leadership positions will be asked to list in order of priority what position they would prefer. EOIs are due to Mrs Hulme (via the office) by Monday, November 7, when they will be considered by a panel. After the EOIs are read, applicants will be informed if they are invited to give a speech, and be voted on by their peers. This process takes place as some positions have over 40 applicants and it would be impossible to hold so many speeches for the children to vote on. House Captain and School Leader voting (anonymous preferential voting) will take place later in the term. Information about the speeches will be sent home to successful EOI applicants and uploaded on the web site in the coming weeks. Other monitor positions are filled based on applications. Please contact your child’s Stage Leader/Assistant Principal if you require more information. Music Room Change: From next week all music classes will be taught in classrooms. Music tutorial groups and band rehearsals will take place in the hall. Some technology changes will be taking place in our Music Room, making it a ‘Technology Room’. Japanese Club will also take place in the room on Mondays at recess (1.35-1.55pm). Learning Support News: In the coming fortnight, classroom teachers will be contacting the parents/caregivers of students who: receive Integration Funding Support OR; are in a support class. If your child receives this support and you do not hear from his/her teacher, please contact the school. We would like to have teachers, support staff and parents/caregivers work together to support students that have Individual Education Plans to have a smooth transition to 2017, by holding some Integration and Transition Planning Meetings throughout Term 4. We look forward to arranging a mutually convenient time to meet with you to support your child.

School Counsellor News: Congratulations to Ms Pauline Allan who has been appointed permanent School Counsellor for Merimbula Public School. We are so fortunate to be able to keep her, as she has been doing such a great job since commencing here in Term 3! Ms Allan’s workdays will now change to Monday and Friday at our school. She will be supporting other schools Tuesday-Thursday. Anti-Racism Contact Officer Update: Mrs Janelle Hodsdon is our new Anti-Racism Contact Officer (ARCO). Please contact Mrs Hodsdon or Ms Hulme if you have any concerns regarding racism, would like information about our school’s Anti-Racism Policy or would like to gain more information about how we support our children through implementing the policy. Mrs Hodsdon and Ms Hulme recently enjoyed completing updated training in this area to support our school and community. School Photos and Late Orders: School Photos should arrive before the next Newsletter comes out in Week 5. We will aim to send them home with the Newsletter. Parents still wishing to order/pay for photos can go to the School Photographer web site: www.theschoolphotographer.com.au and select the “Click here for Online Payments” button. You will then be asked to enter details to make a payment online. Alternately, parents can call the School Photographer’s office on 9674 9824 as they will take credit card payments over the phone (Note – there is a processing fee of $5 for phone payments). Parents can also post a money order to the School Photographer as an alternative payment method. Please contact our office on 64951266 if you require the address. CHEQUES ARE NO LONGER ACCEPTED DUE TO A CHANGE IN BANK POLICY. Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) New Award System: We are currently in the process of implementing a new award system at Merimbula Public School. This decision was made after a thorough evaluation of the current system and feedback from students, staff and parents was received.

Please take the time to make yourself familiar with the model below. We are currently trialling aspects of this system and it will be fully implemented at the start of the 2017 school year. We understand that our older students may have received several Principal’s Awards throughout their years at our school. If they would like to bring them in, we will take them into account and record the number they have (as Bronze Awards) in our new online system, as they strive towards higher award levels. If you have any questions about the new system, please contact us – Vanessa Bain for the PBL Team.

I hope you all had a relaxing and fun time over the school holidays (and perhaps even managed to read a few books)! This term, most stages will continue working on projects that we started in Term 3. ES1 and Stage 1 students began to learn about parts of a computer, and we will now practise how to log on to the Department’s student portal to access our library software, Oliver. Stage 2 and Stage 3 students will learn about the Information Process Skills model, which will develop their research and critical literacy skills. The next batch of school holidays will be here before we know it, so now is the time to really start hunting for library books that may be hiding around your homes! I will be sending home notices in the next few weeks letting students know which books they have not returned. Parents and carers, your assistance in finding these books would be greatly appreciated. Get ready for another action-packed term in the library! As always, keep reading my library champions! - Mrs Feneck

Healthy Food News from Crunch and Sip: Summer fruits - Summer fruits are often the fruit children love the most. And with scrumptious stone fruits, mouth-watering melons and beautiful berries on offer, who can blame them! A small container of mixed berries, sliced peach or nectarine, or chopped

Today we have sent home a note requesting medical information. Term 4

2016

The Big Events!

Kindergarten Orientation Program – Welcome to our Kindergarten Family 2017!

Jackson Cup – Nov. 16 TBC

The Jackson Cup is a Merimbula Public School tradition! The much coveted and hotly contested Jackson Cup was originally, and for several years, only challenged in Senior Boys' Soccer between the two school sporting Houses at the time, Kookaburras and Swans. This inaugural cup was first contested in 1973.

In 2016 Years 3-6 students will participate in a Netball/Soccer Gala Day @ Berrambool. There is a free BBQ for 3-6. K-2 students will take part in a range of games and activities at school. All students get a lemonade icy pole at the end of the day.

For more details about the Jackson Cup, and its namesake Percy Jackson, visit our web site page: http://www.merimbula-p.schools.nsw.edu.au/history-of-jackson-cup

Stage 3 Mini Fete – Friday, October 21:

School Swimming Scheme Year 2 students will be taking part in the School Swimming Scheme in Weeks 8 and 9 this term (November 28 – December 9). Places usually fill up fast, however if the odd seat on the bus is available then non-swimmers from Years 3 and 4 are welcome to enrol. This program is funded by the Department of Education, therefore there is no cost for instructors. Children only need to pay for the bus, and pool entry (unless they have a season pass).

Elective Sports Years 3-6 All Years 3 to 6 students will have the opportunity to choose their own sport program for Weeks 4, 6, 7 and 8 (Fridays) and Week 9 (on Thursday). Some traditional sports and ball games will take place at the school and some students will have the opportunity to attend other venues in the local area (with minimal entry costs to some venues). Students will take part in the same activity over the 5 weeks. Sport during these weeks will be held from 9.45-11.15am. Selection forms will be sent home in the coming week. Some preferences fill up fast, so get your notes and money in quick!

Class Party

Days: To celebrate a wonderful year at

Merimbula Public School, year groups will be taking part in ‘Class Party Day Excursions’ in the last week of term. Notes for these excursions have been sent home today for Stages 1 and 2. They will be going to the movies, Spencer Park and Stage 1 will also be having a Disco during the school day! When details for the Stage 3 Magic Mountain excursion, and the Kindergarten excursion, are finalised, notes will also be sent home for these students.

National Bandanna Day – SRC Fundraiser: The SRC are supporting the National Bandanna Day to raise money for CANTEEN (supporting young people living with cancer) on Friday October 28. Bandannas will be on sale from Monday October 24, to wear on this day. They will cost $4 each and will be sold by the SRC Leaders, outside the office before school throughout the week.

Our Kindergarten Orientation Program commenced early in Term 2. Students and their carers met with our principal and toured the school to find out why it is so great!

We were so excited to have our Kindy Welcome Picnics this week! Next week we will have an Information Session in the Hall and Kindy Activities in the classrooms from 9.30-11am. In Week 3 classroom visits will take place from 9.30-11am, and in Week 4 from 9.30am – 12.15pm as our new friends will stay for lunch!

Stage 3 students will be holding their Mini Fete

next week! Students take $5 to $20 to spend on

this day, taking part in sideshow games,

challenges and guessing competitions. Everyone

learns about money and mathematics in a real

world context while funds raised reduce the cost

for the Stage 3 Excursion to Jindabyne.

Parents/Carers are welcome to attend.
