Prodigal Bikes is very pleased to announce its first African Night at the Village Hall in Merriott, on Saturday 8th July. We start the evening at 6pm with an African Drumming Workshop with Sharon Stone from Organic Rhythm. Sharon will bring along 80 genuine African drums from Ghana and
will teach us some African songs to play together. A lot of fun is guaranteed! We then have a Kenyan style meal cooked for us by the team at My Kitchen, with starter snacks served during the drumming, and a main course and dessert. There will be a licensed bar serving African themed or produced drinks and a raffle too. We hope to raise enough to ship around 40 of the 150 bikes in our first shipment to Kenya this Autumn, to give to children there, who would otherwise, face long walks to school each day. Further details of this event can be found on page 3.

On Saturday July 1st between 10.00am and 3.00pm , over 30 homes in Merriott will be holding sales on their drives, at the Tithe Barn or at the Social Club.
This is mainly in aid of the “Crewkerne Relay for Life” which is raising money for Cancer Research, although other
charities, community groups and businesses will hopefully benefit.
People are invited to buy maps showing the locations of these sales for £1, avail-able from Osbornes, the Social Club, Crewkerne Library and various stalls on the day.
This is a great community event; local businesses and groups will be having special offers, the Church will be selling cakes, the Social Club will be having it’s monthly market with various sales, stalls and bacon butties and there will be tombolas and a grand raffle included on the day.
Be a part of this by buying a map, browsing for a bargain or having a stall yourself.

Merriott School ran a successful maths week at the beginning of June. The school has been working all year at improving its maths teaching by using approach called ‘Mastery Mathematics’. This involves teaching which spends much longer at using mathematical equipment and later leading on to using pictorial representation to help the children understand key math-ematical concepts such as place-value and calculating. The school is now also spending more time on reasoning and problem-solving aspects of mathematics.
Maths Week was about celebrating how important maths is in our lives and raising the profile of the subject. During the week, Maths leader Mr Pearse, put out daily challenges and quizzes for the children to participate in before school and during lessons. At the start of the week, Merriott and Haselbury School ran a joint parent workshop with the purpose of showing how parents can help at home and work in
partnership to support these new approaches. Maths Consultant , Jo Cronin, who has been working with both schools this year, led the session and shared lots of useful tips.
Another successful part of the week was to invite parents in to talk about how they use maths in their work. The children listened to the talks and asked the visitors questions. Mr Smith, head teacher explained; “We were really pleased how the week went and show how important maths is. The children are showing much more positive attitudes to maths over the year through this new approach and are more confident at attempting reasoning and problems-solving questions in assessments.”

It is good to see that the refurbishment of the courts seems to have generated a considerable amount of enthusiasm, with both courts often in use.
Two reminders though please:
The surface is not suitable for football, skateboard or bicycle use. The courts are solely for tennis and basketball, with players using soft sole shoes please.
It is also very important that the nets are lowered after play and not over strained, the straps are set at the regulation height.

One is at the top of Broadshard, the other at Furringdon Cross.
MPC opposed the one at Furringdon Cross, but apparently consent is almost automatic because of the government drive for improved communications.

Kelly Marshall will be running a taster session on Wednesday July 12th at the Village Hall, and regular classes start on Wednesday 6th September. We had good fun and lots of food at our Merriott Gardening Club’s Garden Party & Plant Sale held on Sunday 21st May. It was a busy and very enjoyable afternoon, with many new villagers coming along and stock-ing up with plants for their new gar-dens. And, of course, the weather, after a disastrous week, could not have been better. The Jurassic Coasters swing, dance and classic jazz band played all afternoon in between clotted cream teas!
Upcoming Events: Tuesday 25th July A talk on the Care and Maintenance of Climbing Plants by a representative of the Gardens Group Gold Club. Meet at the Tithe Barn, Church Street at 7.30pm.
Refreshments and Raffle All very welcome non-members £2. For more details please contact Barbara on 72298. Barbara Byford

RAISE THE ROOF! We have all the permissions we need to go ahead with the repairs to the south aisle roof, and we now know that it is going to cost £19,500 (+VAT). Our In-surers will pay £7,500, leaving
us £12,000 to find ourselves. We have already some generous donations to-wards this target – a sincere thank you to those people. We have committed our-selves to doing this work before the onset of winter, so now have a fairly tight deadline to raise the shortfall. The
church is of course applying for grants and you will notice that various events will be happening to help raise funds. But please can I ask for your personal help in two ways. Firstly, could you and your family consider organising a small or large fundraising event to help the cause? And secondly, please would you consider making a donation? Inside this Messenger you will find an A4 flyer ex-plaining how you can do this.
PS. If half the people in Merriott gave £10 each, we would be home and dry
(literally, since we are talking about a roof!) Thank you.
ON A BRIGHTER NOTE ... There are quite a few special services coming up this month, not least a visit from Bishop Ruth to lead a Confirmation Service at the start of the month. Our new curate Rev Nick Clarke joins us in July and we will formally welcome him at a joint Ben-efice service at the end of the month. Come and join in at Beer and Hymns in Dinnington and at the Deanery Songs of Praise too. Apparently the views are
magnificent. We also have our Garden Party and 16 Bells Choir Concert. Lots going on this month - further details elsewhere in the Messenger.

W h a t S t ay s t h e S a m e by Janet Lailey A cliff-top terrace from which to gaze. Eyes claimed for hours by the glitter of a sea blue beyond imagining, beyond a peacock’s iridescence. Marble pillars once supported pedimented shade, over a mosaic floor cool to the feet. A constant little breeze – here, it must be a zephyr – twirls dust and, I now see, cigarette ends.
Some things have changed since those others kicked off their sandals and sipped their wine, she arranging her pleated tunic to recline on cushions, he shading his eyes to assess distant shipping.
Now, to reach the villa, we climb a stony little track, which we would never have found if we hadn’t had the guide-book. Up a steep slope, from the dump where dust lorries are parked: where slaves once swept the courtyard.
Pushing between oleanders to the cliff top, we find that the pillars have long rolled away, eroded, gone. Only their footprint has persisted, level with the tattered tessellated floor: we trace a line of seamed marble discs burnished by centuries of sand-blasting, shining up into the sun’s eye.
Some things have stayed the same --the mesmerising sea, far below, seemingly sloping up to join paler sky at a dark line of horizon; the silhouettes of ships, - tankers or triremes.
And the particle of grit blown into my eye - - that’s the same!
Long before guide-books, or the parked lorries, her sympathetic husband, putting down his wine, would have carefully dabbed her flinching iris; then as now, that would hardly shift the unendurable, timeless irritation, of the grain of sand, blown into my eye by that everlasting zephyr.

The Marquetry Society, which is a National and International organisa-tion and to which our Group is affiliated, runs an annual Exhibition and Competition show, to which members are invited to enter. One of our members, Ron Webster, designed and entered a Plaque to the appropri-ate section and it turns out that he was awarded a Third in the group entered, plus it was also awarded Best in Show!! On top of all that he has been asked if he would provide a write-up on how he went about it for publication in the next quarterly of the Marquetarian, our Society magazine.
The entrants to the annual show are mainly from Britain, but sometimes there are some from abroad and the magazine is distributed to all members, home and abroad, so this is a great honour for our member, who is relatively new to marquetry, having been a member for only two or three years.
This is good news for our little group. If anyone would like to see what Marquetry is about, come and see us in the Blake room in the Village Hall any Monday afternoon, from 2pm to 4pm and we will put you in the picture!!Alternatively, go to marquetry.org (one of the most visited sites after Google!) or contact me via email: williken@ btinternet. com or 01460 74567. The Merriott Youth Football Club held their 30th anniversary presentation at Merriott Recreation Ground on Saturday 3rd June. The Chairman, Paul Lawrence said “We had to celebrate an amazing achievement”. Founders, Monica and Dave Hayden, started the first ever team training in 1986 and first registered Merriott Youth in September 1987. Unfortunately Monica wasn’t able to attend the presentation due to ill health, but Dave was there to celebrate. John Shearing, representing the Somerset FA, and Paul Merley, from the Yeovil & District Youth League, also attended. The presentation was attended by 16 teams from under 6’s to under 15’s, as well as 26 Managers and Coaches with 220 players, boys and girls, receiving a 30th anniversary medal and some individuals receiving Player of the Year’ and ‘Manager‘ and ‘Coaches’ Awards. There was a BBQ, five inflatables with a mini football pitch, music, teas and coffees and ice cream.

Look good, feel good Spring usually heralds the start of the warmer weather and our thoughts turn towards holidays and summer clothes.
Our hard working feet are often neglected throughout the winter months, and now is the perfect time to give your feet some well-deserved attention! Callous peel is a relaxing treat-ment that removes calloused skin on the heels of the feet. A gentle, effective treatment to reveal beautiful soft skin. For a complete pamper it can incorporated into a pedicure - bliss!
Silky smooth skin is also a must - waxing is a great way to remove unwanted hair to reveal beautiful skin. If you are unsure about waxing or about what it entails, please give me a call and I will be happy to answer any questions you may have.
As we age our eyebrows can become sparse and lose definition. Tinting helps restore lost definition, giving the face a more youthful appearance. Lash tinting is perfect for busy women, or those who want to look good splashing in the pool. No need to worry about mascara running or smudging!
So go on, treat yourself and make this summer your most beautiful summer yet!
