Merrick HERALD www.liherald.com MAY 9 - 15, 2013 By SCOTT BRINTON [email protected] In 2008, Merokean Judy Goss, a former high-fashion model for the likes of Armani and L’Oréal, published her first book, “Break into Modeling for Under $20,” with St. Mar- tin’s Griffin. More magazine, where she was a casting editor and the national TV spokeswoman at the time, published a full-page piece in honor of the book’s launch. The mother of twin daughters, who were 4 at the time, had recently turned 40. “This is what 40 looks like,” read the headline. Goss, who was photographed in a flowered blouse, white pants and hoop ear- rings, radiated happiness, with a wide smile etched across her face. She was, as they say, on top of the world. A year and a half later, More, a fashion, beauty and health magazine aimed at women over 35, needed to cut its staff amid the Great Recession, and Goss was laid off. “I was pretty rattled,” she said. “You just have to move on.” Move on she did, and now she’s back tak- ing on the world. With eight months of sever- ance pay from More, Goss, who turns 45 this year, founded a national networking organi- zation, Over 40 Females, which is connecting over-40 women across the U.S., empowering them through motivational talks, events and articles to look deeply within themselves, find their callings and stand up for them- selves in an often male-dominated business world infatuated with youth culture. “Women over 40 feel underrepresented,” she said. “They feel a little like society sees them –– as disappearing.” Finding yourself after 40 Even in this era of seeming equality, Goss said, scores of over-40 women have given up the career plans they laid out in their teens and 20s to raise children, leaving the work force, partly or completely, for 10 or 20 years. In that time, they may have been divorced, gotten ill or both, while their work skills lan- guished. In their middle years, they may sud- denly find themselves alone after their chil- dren have grown up and moved on. They need a nurturing place to rebuild their lives. Or maybe nothing has gone wrong, but they need to find themselves beyond mother- hood. They must reinvent themselves, dis- cover the potential that lies within and make business connections. Enter Over 40 Females. The networking group enables women over 40 to gather for meetings, often at chic hotels and eateries. Mostly, they talk –– about themselves, their hopes, their plans –– and receive feedback from women who understand them. Many monthly meetings feature expert speakers who advise network members on the family, health, financial and career issues that they face. Over 40 Females’ motto is simple: “Con- nect. Encourage. Inspire.” A company is born The seeds of Over 40 Females were plant- ed in January 2010, when Goss began blog- ging about issues that over-40 women con- front. At the time she was working as a mar- keting director at a public relations firm, and had no idea where her blogging might take her. She just wanted to return to the work that she had done at More. A month later, the P.R. firm laid her off –– her second layoff in six months. At that point she decided she had to go it alone. “You’re not safe corporate. You’re not safe boutique. I thought, I have to do my own thing,” said Goss, who is married to Bruce Levitt, co- owner of Mur-Lee’s Men’s and Boys’ Shop in Lynbrook with his brother Harry. What, precisely, Goss would do after her second layoff was unclear. Slowly, through blogging, ideas began to emerge, and she started to hold small networking events in New York City. Over 40 Females, the company, was born in the fall of 2011, and over the past year and a half it has opened chapters in Arizona, Cal- ifornia, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illi- nois, Louisiana, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Texas. The goal is to for it to grow across the U.S. as well as internationally, said Goss, who is the com- pany’s chief executive officer. Overseeing the business side of Over 40 Females is Beth Mercante, of Lido Beach, its chief operating officer. Mercante, who also turns 45 this year, attended the company’s networking meetings for a year before join- ing its leadership team. So often, men, younger and older, “don’t understand what women over 40 are going through,” said Mercante, whose background is in commercial real estate and investment in Manhattan. Over 40 Females, she said, gives them the sense that someone values them. And, Mercante said, “The speakers are really fantastic.” Carlita Belgrove, 42, who owns Belgrove Appliances Inc. in Westchester, whose spe- cialty is restoring old and antique stoves, is a member of Over 40 Females’ Westchester chapter. “I love this particular group,” Bel- grove said. “They’re all very supportive. They’ve all been very positive.” What Over 40 Females is building, Bel- grove said, “is a network of successful busi- nesswomen all over the country.” She noted that a member of a networking group from New York could stop at chapter meetings anywhere they are held, meaning that Bel- grove could cultivate business relationships with women from any number of other states. “It’s ingenious,” she said. An Over 40 Females membership is $5.95 per month. Chapter leaders work on commis- sion. For more, check out over40females.com.
