Charity begins @ homeMerritt has quite a number of not just

homeless people, but folks with greatneeds, in spite of having some kind ofresidence. St. Michaels Anglican Churchhouses the Soup Bowl twice a week, andover the past 4 or 5 months at least 30new faces have shown up to have awarm meal. Some of these people havelived here for some time, and have falleninto difficult situations with the down-turn in the economy. Others admit thatthey were offered a bus ticket to Merritt, with the hint that life would be easierhere for them, at least for the winter.

Whatever the reason for the level ofincreased needs, with the ChristmasSeason upon us, St. Michaels, togetherwith a number of Nicola Valley Quilters, plan to make the season a bit brighter forat least 100 people. The Church Christmastree will be a Mitten Tree this year, with(hopefully) lots of mittens, gloves, scarvesand hats clipped to its branches. Underthe tree, will have 100 bags filled with per-sonal need items. The members of theQuilt Guild, and parishioners of St.Michaels are collecting items for eitherthe Mitten Tree, or the bags.

During Soup Bowl hours (11:30am-1pm) on Dec. 15 & 18, some of us willpass out warm clothing items from theMitten Tree, and cloth bags filled withcombs, shampoo, handcream, cutips,

soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and anyother items for personal use.If youd like to donate an item for the

Mitten Tree or personal-need items for the bags, please contact Suzy, 378-2128 orleave a message on the church phone (378-3772), or better yet stop in at the SoupBowl on Tues. or Fri., and those hard-working volunteers would be happy toreceive your gifts. Suzy Ireland

5, the Coqui-halla, is ahighway engi-neering feat, avoiding themany curvesand hills asso-

ciated withthe Fraser Canyon route. It was com-pleted as a toll highway in 1986.

In the 1900s, the Kettle Valley Railway chose this route to cross the coastal moun-tains. Later, a gas pipeline was built over the pass. In 1962, the CPR abandoned thisline. The pipeline company built a road along parts of the right of way to accesstheir pipeline. In the mid-1980s, the BC Govt built the Coquihalla Tollway at greatexpense and some controversy over the pass. At that time, some of the railwayremains vanished beneath the new road. Further down the valley, towards Hope, was a concrete and wooden snowshed, and a tunnel which the pipeline road used.During the years that Highway 5 was a tollway, many drivers including truckersattempted to avoid the tollway by driving the old pipeline road and finally the roadwas gated.
