There are an estimated 5000 Clydesdales remaining in the world. Another goal of the USACPF is to research and determine the current population in the United States. Currently the U.S. population is unknown. With their origins in Scotland during the early 19th century, the Clydesdale was bred specifically as a working farm horse. They are a “draft” horse, which is a term to describe the pulling “horse power” of large breed horses. The Clydesdales are one of the largest of the draft horses ranging from 1800 to 2500 lbs and 16 to 19 hands in height. Clydesdales came to the U.S. in the late 19th century. They were utilized as farm horses and war horses in the early years, but their numbers declined drastically due to casualties of war and the industrial revolution, as they were no longer needed for their pulling power, with the exception of a small number of farms that maintained them to plow their fields. Most recently the small amount of hitches run by interested horseman have contributed to their population. Economic strains throughout the last 60 years have also effected the population of the Clydesdale. One of the largest issues for the Clydesdale Horse is the lack of having a new purpose for the breed. Promoting the Clydesdale as a riding horse will help create a demand for them. wringing wet, but so werethose of every man in theparty. The next day the raincontinued as hard as ever, andso it was for the ten dayswe were on the march upthe Nueces. There was nota minute that it cleared off.The river, which ordinarilywas a small enough stream, was so swollen that it wasthree or four miles wide inplaces. Every night we layin the rain and everymorning we started outagain to ride in it.

In any other country, the sick-list woulddoubtless have been alarge one under suchconditions, but the Rangerssuffered no ill effects from thecontinuous drenching. HoraceRowe, who was inclined to beconsumptive, improvedwonderfully in health on the

trip and gained in weight. Thespirits of the men never laggedfor a moment. . .

All the way up theNueces we took every manprisoner we met and made himfall in with us. By the time wereached Carrizo Springs we

had over a score of theseprisoners, but we effectuallyprevented the news of ouradvance upon Fisher’sstronghold from becomingknown, for it was his gang of

desperadoes we were after. On the night of October

1st, we reached a point nearFisher’s house, and succeededin capturing one Noley Key, amember of his gang. I knownot what threats Armstrongused to Key, but he at last

willingly acted as ourguide. He told Armstrongthat Fisher and his menwere away from home. Wesurrounded the settlementand closed in on it, only tofind that Key told the truthand that no one was therebut the women andchildren.

But Armstrong didnot give up. He took Keyaside and drew from himthe information that aband of horse-thieves werein camp on the banks of

Lake Espinosa, six or sevenmiles distant. Key toldArmstrong that seven menwere in the band, and thatthey were going to drivefarther north in a few days.

Armstrong immediatelydivided his men, sendingeighteen of the Rangers downto another desperadosettlement and taking six withhim to go to the lake. The sixwere Devin, Durham, Evans,Boyd, Parrott, and myself.Key acted as our guide and westarted off. The rain hadceased during the afternoonand a full moon was ridinghigh in the heavens.

We rode slowly forabout an hour and then turnedoff into some woods, where wedismounted. Key pointed outthe location of the thieves’camp and then was told toremain where he was, withEvans and Devine who wereleft in the woods in charge ofthe horses.

“Boys” said Armstrongto the four men who were leftwith him, “we are going tocapture those thieves or killthem. The reason I did notbring more men along wasbecause I was afraid thesefellows wouldn’t resist us if wewere so many. Key tells methat they stood off the Sheriffand his posse a few nights ago,

deputies were salaried; theothers were sworn in and, inreturn for servingsubpoenas, warrants, andarresting individuals chargedwith federal crimes (robbingthe mails, desertion from thearmy or the navy, stealinggovernment stock, ormurdering Indians on or offthe reservation), they werepaid a fee, plus mileage. Thiswas $2 per day and themileage was worked out at

about six to ten cents a milewhile on active duty. Themarshal himself received nosalary—his reward was theoff ice itself—but he didreceive a percentage of thefees paid to his deputies.

Before 1896 deputyU.S. marshals were eligibleto receive state or territorialrewards for apprehendingcriminals, but not the U.S.marshal or his salaried officedeputy. In some instances, however, promised rewardswere withdrawn on atechnicality or the recipientmight have to share it withhis assistants. The term“bounty hunter” was moreaptly termed “man-hunter”in the old days. Thoseindividuals who set out onmanhunts were invariablyeither commissioned policeoff icers or employees ofrailroads, express agenciesor well-known organizationssuch as the Pinkertons.

In Indian Territory(present day Oklahoma),enforcing the law could besomewhat complicated.Federal laws were alignedwith tribal law and these lawsapplied only to individualsbelonging to the nation ortribe where the allegedoffenses took place. Thingswere complicated further asfrequently the Indians hadtheir own ideas of howjustice should be carriedout.

Judge Isaac Parker, whose United States Courtfor the Western District ofArkansas included theIndian Territory in itsjurisdiction, employed alarge number of deputy U.S.marshals, many of themblacks or Indians. Themarshals in the districtroutinely faced some of theroughest and toughestcriminals on the continent, but if Parker’s reputation asthe “hanging judge” isanything to go by, these mendid a remarkable job.

“Here they come, boys! Here they come!” shoutedthe man who had arisen. Inan instant the seven men atthe camp were up and the onewho had shouted fired at us.

yelling curses at me; but withmy shot he dropped like adog. I thought I had killedhim and turned my attentionto the others, but, except forone man with whom Boydwas having a fierce hand-to-hand fight with knives, allwere either dead or hadjumped into the lake.

Over and over rolledBoyd and the desperado, butin the end Boyd jerkedhimself loose, his knifedripping with the thief’sheart-blood.

The f ight lasted notmore than three or fourminutes, but in that timefully two hundred shots werefired. We turned over thebodies of the dead men. Theywere all well -knowndesperadoes—John Martin, alias “One-eyed John;” “Jim”Roberts, and GeorgeMullen. The man whom Ishot was named McAlister. Iwas bending over andlooking at his face, when Isaw his eyes move.

“Hello!” I cried; “thisman isn’t dead.”

McAlister lookedstraight at me and began tobeg for his life.

“For God’s sake, gentlemen, don’t kill me,” hebegged piteously. “ForGod’s sake don’t kill me!”

“No one wants to killyou,” I said. “We are notmurderers. Would you likesome water?”

He murmured that hewould, and I took a tin cupfrom beside the camp-fireand went down to the lakeand dipped it full of water. When I returned to him, I putit to his lips and he drank. He told me he was woundedin the leg and a part of hisjaw was also shot away. Ithought he would surely die,but we promised to send awagon for him and made himas comfortable as we couldbefore we left him. Then wereturned to where we hadleft our horses with Devineand Evans.

As I was walkingsilently along in the woodswith the rest of the boys, Iheard suddenly, close infront of me, the sharp clickof a gun being cocked andthe quick demand: “Halt!”

I stopped so quicklythat I nearly fell overbackward. It was Devine whogave the command, and in amoment we told who wewere. Evans stood close toDevine.

“Where’s Noley Key?”asked Armstrong.“Dead,” said Devine.

“Dead?”“Yes. When he heard

about him, for on the way tothe camp he had been talkingin a pleasant way to me and Ihad given him some tobacco. He was no great loss to thecommunity, however, for hewas a well-known horse-thief.

system. But now their returnalmost disabled him forwork, and kindled anew thetorturing local inflammationthat his injury had broughtwith it to his system.

He became convincedthat if he would live to blessand educate his family, orwould enjoy even tolerablehealth, he must immediatelyseek a climate free from thesudden and extreme changesso common to the region inwhich he had spent the lastfew years. In the summer of1849 an effort was made toinduce a party to organize, for the purpose ofemigration to that part of theNew-Mexican Territory lyingabout the mouth of the RioColorado and Gila Rivers.Considerable excitementextended over the northernand western portions ofIllinois concerning it. Therewere a few men, men oftravel and information, whowere well acquainted withthe state of the country lyingalong the east side of thenorthern end of the Gulf ofCalifornia, and they hadreceived the most flatteringinducements to form there acolony of the Anglo-Saxon

people.Accordingly notices

were circulated of thenumber desired and of theintention and destiny of theundertaking. The countrywas represented as of a mild, bland climate, where theextremes of a hot summerand severe winter wereunknown. Mr. Oatman, afterconsiderable deliberationupon the state of his health, the necessity for a change ofclimate, the reliability of theinformation that had comefrom this new quarter, and

other circumstances havingan intimate connection withthe welfare of thosedependent upon him, sent inhis name, as one who, with afamily, nine in all, was readyto join the colony; and againhe determined to attempt hisfortune in a new land.
