Free Movies
The District of Invermere is in the holiday spirit this Christmas season. They are showing free movies at the Community Hall throughout the holidays. There are 9 different movies showing over 8 days, some in the evening and some during the day. It all begins with ‘National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation’ on Wednesday, December 21 at 7 pm. All the movies have been carefully selected for our enjoyment. It will be fun for all ages. Check the ad on page 3 for the rest of the movies and the dates and times of the screenings.
Dear Santa
“Again this year I am requesting a slim body and a fat bank account. I respectfully request that you do not continue to get them backwards.”
Christmas Eve Fireworks
The folks of Wilmer are holding their an-nual Fireworks Celebration on Christmas Eve, Saturday, December 24 at 8 pm. Eve-ryone is invited to Conrad Kain Memorial Park at the Community Hall to hang out at
the bonfires, enjoy free hot chocolate and watch a great fireworks display. Go a bit early so you can enjoy some fan-tastic Christmas light displays on your way and you will need time to get parked. The fireworks are totally funded by your dona-tions. Merry Christmas.
Ultimate Fighting
Get down to the Copper City Saloon in the Best Western Invermere Inn on Friday, December 30 for an Ultimate Fight Night. Rhonda Rousey returns to take on Amanda Nunes. It will be very exciting. The main card begins at 8 pm and DJ XXII will follow. Grab some friends and enjoy a great night out.

Riddliculous
How aware are you of your surroundings? Here is a quick quiz. Which two letters of the alphabet do not appear on a telephone dial/number pad? Do books have their even-numbered pages on the left or the right? On a standard traffic light, is green on the top or bottom? See page 9.
Forgotten Reindeer
Not many people really liked that other reindeer, named Olive. You know, ‘Olive, the other reindeer, used to laugh and call him names.’
Christmas Worship Services
The Alliance Church hosts 3 services on Christmas Eve, starting with a ‘Mountaintop Service’ at 2 pm on top of the hill at Panorama Resort. Then at 6 pm there is a Candlelight Ser-vice at the Lake Windermere Alliance Church (just behind Sobeys). It is a beauti-ful service of worship with Christmas Car-ols, love and fellowship. A final Mountain Service at the Great Hall at Panorama begins at 8:15 pm. Everyone is invited to join in celebrating the true meaning of Christmas at all the services.
Telling Our Life Stories
The Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy (CBAL) is offering a free, weekly, 9-workshop program on Friday mornings, 10:30 am-12:30 pm, beginning January 6. Robservations
Woo hoo! The last Robservations of 2016! Two weeks off from writing. A nice relief. Anyway, thanks to everyone who reads this stuff and mentions it to me. You are inspiring. Here are a few of my thoughts on living with some happiness. Be nice to everyone. It feels great. Eliminate some negativity from your life. It is crazy how many folks will complain end-lessly about things that have no relevance in their lives. Increase your positive thoughts. We all live a million miracles every day; we just don’t see them. I live in a house with hot water and food. That’s pretty awesome really. Do daily random acts of kindness. Making a bit of a difference in someone’s day can make a huge difference in your day. Forgive it. Just let those bad things go. Love people, not objects. A new friend will bring you a lot more joy than a new toy. As will an old friend. Continue reading The Valley Peak. It’s always good for a smile. Have a great Christmas and holiday sea-son. See you in 2017!
Stages of Santa
Men go through three phases of Santa Claus. First he believes in Santa. Next he doesn’t believe in Santa. Then he is Santa Claus. Many of us hit a fourth stage when we look like Santa.
Horsethief Happenings
Live Music Mondays brings local legend ‘Big Eli B’ and his Blues Band to the Horsethief Creek Pub in Radium from 7 to 9 pm on Boxing Day, Monday, December 26. That will be a great evening during the holiday season. New Year’s Eve brings karaoke to the Horse on Saturday, December 31. Ring in the New Year singing songs and celebrat-ing a new beginning for 2017.
New Family Restaurant
The Skookum Inn Gas Station has opened up the restaurant with new staff and a cook from the past. Norma is back behind the wheel. Reviews have been great so far. They are offering up good old-fashioned home-style meals in a comfortable setting. Stop in and enjoy a tasty and affordable dining experience. You can order takeout at 778-526-5262.

Watson’s Waddle
This is a crazy season. You folks call it Christ-mas. There are bright lights, strange songs, loud noises, weird decorations and char-acters everywhere. People even bring trees, my favourite pee-ing places, right into their homes and busi-nesses. I seem to recall last year that a new bed and a couple of toys came into my life around this time. I wonder what will hap-pen this year. Rob has been pretty good. He knows that sudden movements and noises startle me so he lets me stay pretty close to him when we are out and about. Everyone seems to have treats these days and I would love to eat them all but Rob seems to claim the baked goods while letting me have the doggie treats. Please pay attention to your pets through the holidays. It can be a scary and stress-ful time. Remind us that we are cared for with a little scritch or a friendly few words. It will make a huge difference to your pet.
What Year Was It?
The Vietnam War ended, Jimmy Hoffa disappeared, the VHS and laser printers were introduced, Saturday Night Live and Wheel of Fortune debuted and Tiger Woods was born. Bruce Springsteen re-leased ‘Born to Run’, ‘Tommy’ reached the theatres and the Bic disposable razor was invented. What year was it? See page 11.
Pretty Witty
My friend attended the Special Olympics. He said the events were great but he could never find a parking spot anywhere near the place.
Sing in the New Year
The Whitehouse Pub is hosting karaoke all weekend for New Years. Stop in Friday, December 30 and Saturday, December 31 for some awesome entertainment. Become part of the entertainment and belt out a few tunes yourself. Enjoy a couple of great evenings with friends bringing back all your favourite songs. Have some fun at the Whitehouse this year and next.

Merry Christmas
I hope you all have a wonderful time cele-brating the birth of Christ and the love that comes with it. Don’t worry too much about giving and receiving gifts. Just get together with family and/or friends and share your time and your love. Know that you are loved and that people are just happy to be able to hang out with you. Hug your children and remind them that you love them. It will make for a hap-pier Christmas season. And remember that the good spirit that we show between Christmas and New Year’s should also be shown between New Year’s and Christmas (year-round).
Shopping Early
“Why are you in jail?” asked the lawyer. “I was doing my Christmas shopping early this year,” answered Dave. “That isn’t illegal.” “It was before the store opened.”
Why Am I Doing This?
About 3 weeks into my ownership of The Valley Peak I received an email asking what was the point of the paper and men-tioning that they felt it was a waste of time and trees. That was in 2006, 10 years ago. It was a tough beginning. Why do I do it? Well, of course it puts a bit of bread on the table (not a lot, though). It does come with a great lifestyle of keeping in touch with the community and its events. But most importantly, I hope it adds a bit of happiness or provokes some positive thoughts for the readers. Maybe you enjoy the puzzles, riddles, jokes and trivia or maybe you are looking for that upcoming event or activity. And I hope that bit of hap-piness grows throughout your days.

Station Cheers
The ‘Cheers to the Arts’ promotion at The Station Neighbourhood Pub continues until January 15. A dollar from each pint and three bucks from every jug are being do-nated towards Audio-Visual equipment for the new multi-use community centre in Invermere. So far more than $5,000 has been raised. The owners, Jason and Justin will match the total amount in January. So pick a pint at The Station and you are actually picking a couple bucks right out of J & J’s pockets to donate to the community hall. That sounds like a good plan through the holiday season.
Wish List
“Dear Lord” shouted the boy during bed-time prayers at Grandma’s house. “For Christmas please ask Santa to bring me a telescope, a new bike and a smart phone!” “You don’t have to shout,” said his father, “God isn’t deaf.” “No, but Grandma is.”
Inside ICAN
Snoball, reporting for the ICAN Rescue and Adoption Facility from my warm and loving foster home. Our Facility was SO busy the last couple of weeks! It seems this bitter cold has brought the stray/lost cats out asking for warmth. Thanks to the loving people in our commu-nity we were able to step in and get these cold kitties to safety. Please take a look at our website or Facebook page to see the newest additions looking for a home of their own. If you have a couple hours to spare please call ICAN 250.341.7888 as we need all the help we can get, with such a full house. Have a safe and happy holidays!
Local Shopping
I read a great note from a lady who did all her shopping here in the valley and is very happy with herself. She notes the excellent service, the unique items and the joy of knowing that she has supported our com-munity while finding gifts for her friends and family. And you know the rest. The money stays in the valley for respending, someone might get hired locally, all that stuff. It is a wonderful thing to take the time to get to know and support our fellow community members and their families.

Rockies Hockey
The Columbia Valley Rockies played a great game last Saturday against Golden, resulting in a 5-2 victory. It was a fast-skating, hard-fought battle with some solid goaltending. Good job guys. The Rockies finish the calendar year host-ing the Golden Rockets on Saturday, De-cember 31. Going to the game will be a great way to start your New Year’s Eve celebration. Fernie and Kimberley will be in town on Friday and Saturday, January 6 and 7. Come on out and enjoy some good, enter-taining live hockey right here in Invermere. Last week’s 50/50 draw was over $300, a nice bonus for a lucky fan.

Be It Resolved
Happy New Year everyone! I am happy that we got through 2016. It has been a crazy year that went by very quickly. What will you be resolving on New Year’s Eve? People love to make resolutions to change their lives. Personally, I have never found it to work very well for me. I am more likely to reflect on last year and try to highlight my highlights while contem-plating my low points. We all make mis-takes. I just want to be a good person, kind, giv-ing, forgiving, helpful, supportive and all that stuff. That is what makes me feel good. I am also working on avoiding stressful situations. Just say ‘No’ and walk away to live a happier and longer life.

Christmas Credit
Why is Christmas like time at the office? You do all the work and some fat old guy in a suit takes all the credit.
Good Soup for You
The Edgewater Seniors do not hold a ‘Soup and Bun’ luncheon in December. We will have to wait until the last Friday of January. But if you are craving incredible soup, stop by Kootenay Coffee Works & Soup Co. next to Bavin Glass near the crossroads. They offer a choice of two delicious home-made soups every day. They produce about 200 different soup flavours through-out the year. They also have amazing lunch specials. The prime rib on Thursdays is fantastic and most often sells out so get there early.
Gift Wrapping
Don’t forget about the great gift wrapping service at ‘Smaller Footprints Children’s Boutique’. Janice does a pretty fancy job with the gifts. The service will continue year-round by donation to the Christmas Bureau. Thanks to everyone who donates time and effort to help our community.
Great Dinner
Remember to get your reservations for the Rocky River Grill lobster dinner on New Year’s Eve. It will be an incredible meal and the perfect way to close off 2016.

There’s the Puck
Congratulations to young Myles Messer of Calgary on winning last week’s ‘Where’s the Puck’ contest. Myles receives a free large Fairmont pizza, 2 passes to Coy’s Par 3 and 2 tickets to any Rockies game. It’s easy to win folks and there are some great prizes. Go to page 8 for more infor-mation.
The Year It Was
(From page 4) In 1977, a new house was worth $39,300, average annual income was $14,100 and a car cost $4,250. Iron Maiden was formed, the SS Edmund Fitz-gerald sank and oil reached $13 a barrel.
Looking Good
We were sitting in the pub having a bever-age when my friend pointed at 2 old drunks and said, “That’s us in 10 years.” “That’s a mirror you idiot.”
5 Tips to Happy Holidays
The holiday season can be very stressful. We often tend to lose focus on the things that are really important. Here are a few helpful tips. Turn off the news. It’s bad. Be in love with everyone and everything. Remember that the best things in life are not things at all. Donate, give away or recycle any and all clutter. Take a break from everything. A real break. Hopefully you will have a chance to try any of these tips and reduce your seasonal stress.
Perfect Ice
I have been out on the lake a little bit and yes, it is incredible this year. It froze quickly with no wind or snow so it is very smooth. Perfect for skating and lots of folks are already taking advantage of that. It is pretty thick already as well. I have seen a few vehicles on the lake around fishing shacks lately (I am not suggesting you drive on the lake). It measured 11 inches down by Kinsmen Beach on Satur-day afternoon. Lake Windermere is a wonderful winter playground with many different users. Take advantage of it this winter. Have fun and please clean up your mess and be respectful of other users.

JellyBean TV
Are you interested in cable-free television? JellyBean TV offers a solution. Stream your TV from the Internet using the Jelly-Bean Ripple. An initial cost of $315 plus tax and a monthly fee of only $5.99 gets you more than 120 HD channels plus free pay-per-view, sports, new movies, new television shows, news, music channels and more. Call Kari at 250-688-3474.
Dog Licenses
The new year brings the need for a new dog tag from the District of Invermere. The tag allows them to find you if your dog is found out on its own some day. It is quite handy really. The cost is reasonable at $15 for dogs that have been fixed or $35 for dogs that are ‘unaltered’. Stop in at the District office to pick up your new tag soon.
Where I Was
The photo on page 6 shows a couple very bright bicycles on the top of a van. It is a float from this year’s ‘Light Up’ parade in Invermere. Thanks to all the folks who put floats in the parade.
Which are You?
If the people of the world were broken down into two groups, producers and con-sumers, which would you be? Are you out there contributing to the world, trying to make it a bit better place to be? Are you raising up others, both physically and emotionally? Or are you taking from the world, trying to make yourself a bit richer and more impor-tant? Are you raising yourself up at the cost of others? That is a question that we all need to an-swer for ourselves. It can seem tough to be a good person.
Airport Decorations
Why should there be mistletoe in every airport throughout the whole year? So you can kiss your luggage goodbye.
Pure White
I really love the perfection after a fresh snowfall. You know, that undisturbed whiteness in the trees, on the ground, cov-ering the vehicles; you know, everywhere. Leaving those first tracks, walking, driving,
skiing, sledding, even shoveling (sadly) is a pleasant experience. Watson and I just experienced it with a late night walk. Happy winter everyone.
Curling Centre
The Invermere District Curling Centre has been having a busy season. Thank you to all the groups that have been utilizing the facility and learning about curling. Coming up in January is the Bonspiel on the Lake, happening on the 20, 21 and 22 of the month. It is a huge event that puts 64 teams out on the lake ice by Kinsmen Beach. It is a very unique event and Invermere does it right. Watch for it in the new year.
A Little Green
I received a great Christmas card that of-fered a ‘green’ suggestion on the back. “Many dishes, such as casseroles and frozen meals do not really require a pre-heated oven. Just place the dish in the oven and turn it on and you are saving energy.”
