Friday, September 1, parents and family were able to tour campus, visits classes and spend time with their Midship-men/Plebes. The Colorado Parents Association had a booth where they sold flags, ornaments, and jewelry. A formal parade took place on Tomb Field on Saturday followed by a football game afterward against Misericordia. Mariners won the game 56-35. Which equates to 252 pushups for the Plebes.

The Middle States Commission on Higher Education has granted the USMMA full reaccreditation, academy offi-cials announced Nov. 16. The reaccreditation affirms that the institution meets the commission’s rigorous and com-prehensive standards in displaying characteristics of excellent in higher education, the USSMA said in a news re-lease.
“I thank all of the staff, faculty and Midshipmen who worked so hard to achieve this milestone,” said Rear Admiral James A. Hellis, the USMMA Superintendent. The USMMA had been issued a warning during an accreditation re-view in the spring of 2016 over concerns about the school’s efforts to combat sexual assault on campus and during Sea Year, and the institution’s governance. The academy was given two years to reach compliance.
The warning was removed through the reaccreditation process. The accreditation commission requested a monitor-ing report due Sept. 1, 2018, to show that the USMMA is continuing to work toward achieving the missions and goals that were identified through the review process.
The Middle States Commission is moving to an eight-year reaccreditation cycle, so the academy’s next full reac-creditation review will be completed in 2024.

Setter Kyleigh Kappas, a sophomore from Parker, led the USMMA volleyball team to the Skyline Conference title and its first NCAA Di-vision III tournament since 2001 this fall. Emily Gramer from Lake-wood, a senior outside hitter, and Jourin Thompson, a freshman out-side hitter from Brighton, also were on the team. The Mariners finished 17-8 overall, earning the NCAA bid by winning the Skyline Conference Tournament. USMMA, which finished second in the regular-season standings, upended Mount St. Vincent in five sets in the tournament’s championship match. Kappas, who played high school volleyball at Douglas County in Cas-tle Rock, had a double-double with 24 assists and 13 digs in the NCAA tournament match, which the Mariners lost 25-20, 25—10, 25-16 to Stevens Institute in Potsdam, N.Y. She averaged 8.79 assists a set for the season while running the Mariners offense and also had 35 kills, 28 service aces and nine blocks. Gramer, a graduate of Littleton High School, started twice and finished the season with 10 kills, five assists, sev-en digs and three blocks. Thompson, a graduate of Prairie View High School, had four kills, eight digs and five services aces.
Kappas was named a first-team all-conference performer by the Skyline Conference coaches along with team-mate Dominique Pope, a senior outside hitter. Junior outside hitter Kate Lefler was named to the second team.

Mariners cap football season with bowl victory USSMA’s football team capped a 6-4 season with a bowl vic-tory Nov. 18 at the University of Delaware. Two of the Mari-ners’ players are from Colorado, junior long-snapper Tyson Blauw from Strasburg and junior defensive lineman Greg Royal from Evergreen, and one is from New Mexico, tight end Gregg Hermanns from Albuquerque. The Mariners beat Buffalo State 32-14 in the East Coast Ath-letic Conference’s Clayton Chapman Bowl. Quarterback Brice Moore ran for 130 yards and three touchdowns for the Mariners.
USMMA secured its spot in the bowl game by defeating the U.S. Coast Guard Academy a week earlier in the annual Sec-retaries’ Cup. The game was streamed live by ESPN this year at ESPN3.com and on its WatchESPN app as part of the TV network’s week-long celebration of Veteran’s Day. The victory was the third straight in the Secretaries’ Cup for USMMA, which leads the all-time series with Coast Guard 32-14. Moore, running the Mariners’ triple-option offense, ran for 998 yards and 12 touchdowns this season and threw for 945 yards and three TDs.
Eight Mariners earned all-conference honors. Sophomore receiver Joe Vitelli and senior offensive lineman Bob Heyward were named to the first team. Senior fullback Luke Tiefentaler, senior offensive lineman William Ma-
