This Thursday 10th August between 3.30 -7.30pm the University Campus will be holding its Parent Teacher
Conversations. This is earlier than the junior campuses as the senior classes finish earlier in term 4 and
therefore it is more meaningful to discuss progress now than at the end of term when there won ’t be as
much time or opportunity to improve. Bookings can be made through Compass or by contacting the
University Campus general office on 51323800.
Please note this is only relevant for the VCE class that a Year 10 may be studying. Churchill Campus will have Parent Teacher Conversations at the end of this term.
Year 10 students with classes at University Campus
Second Step for Year 10 students
Year 10 students have had another opportunity to meet with University Campus Staff recently to ask questions and clarify understanding about the programs and subjects on offer in 2018. The course counselling day on Wednesday 23rd August is fast approaching and the more prepared the students are the better to enable the most appropriate selections for next year and beyond. Students needing help to prepare should contact Ms. Ashton.

Message from our Campus Principal—
Learning Behaviour Reports
Every 4-5 weeks the Campus prepares Learning Behaviour Reports for students that indicate the level at which they are displaying behaviours that are important for learning. The August Report will soon be available online through our student management system – Compass. New families and anyone who has misplaced their log-ins can contact the Churchill Campus office on 51323700 to obtain their log-in details. If families are unable to access Compass, or for some reason requires a printed version of the report, this can be arranged by contacting the office. Previous reports are able to be accessed through Compass and a trend graph of results for the year to date and previous years is displayed below the current report. The reports create a valuable opportunity to discuss how students are going at school and are most useful in setting targets for improvement in particular areas for the next report. If there are any concerns relating to the report please feel free to contact the relevant teacher or Team Leader via the Campus office on 51323700.
Naplan
Results for this year’s NAPLAN are being released soon and the individual reports will be sent to schools later
this month which we will then distribute to families. These tests provide the school with a series of data that
is one measure amongst a range that we use to not only assess our progress but also identify areas that we
may be able to improve.
Unfortunately a test result is often taken to mean how smart someone is, where in fact it merely measures what that person was able to do on a particular day and is not a predictor of future capacity. Test scores play a role in education but they are not the goal of education and if given greater importance than they deserve they can actually hinder learning and lead to a fixed mindset that inhibits further learning. We believe all our students can learn and improve over time and the data that we gather is one part of the feedback to help inform our planning for learning in the future.
We're conducting a survey to find out what you think of our school.
The Parent Opinion Survey is completed annually by the Department of Education and Training and is conducted amongst a sample of randomly selected parents at every school in Victoria. This year, about 30 per cent of parents will be invited to participate. All responses to the survey are anonymous.
The survey helps our school gain an understanding of how you view our school climate, student engagement, and relationships. Our school will use the results to inform school planning and improvement strategies.
The survey will be conducted online by ORIMA Research Pty Ltd and only takes 15 minutes to complete. It can be accessed from Monday 7th August to Sunday 27th August.
The survey is available in English, Arabic, Vietnamese, Mandarin, Chin (Hakha) and Hindi.
Results will be sent back to our school at the end of September.

Year 7 News ……….
Ancient Civilisations Project.
Students should have received their results and feedback on their projects recently. Some students have done very well and should be congratulated for their work ethic. We would strongly recommend having a conversation with students regarding their outcome.
Uniform
MATHS – Mainstream students have been working on Fractions and discovering how to manipulate fractions with the four operations. ALPs will be developing their skills in decimals.
ENGLISH - In English year 7 students are working hard at responding to the text “Once” by Morris Gleitzman. The novel is set in Poland during world war 2 and is told through the journey of a young Jewish boy. Student’s are enjoying the novel and making wonderful connections to the pre teaching about World War 2 that was covered at the beginning of term. Students are currently hearing TEEL a lot in English. TEEL is an acronym (Topic sentence, Explanation, Evidence, Link) that is used to teach students paragraph structures, this skill is important not just for writing in English, but all learning areas as a way to answer questions. Over the coming weeks students will be asked to write many different TEEL responses to questions relating to the novel.
SCIENCE - In Science students have just finished looking at the way scientist classify organisms. They have learnt how to use and create dichotomous keys for various organisms including some ‘creepy critters’. To show their understanding students have completed a Common Assessment Task based on using and creating a dichotomous key.
Students will now be learning about the six kingdoms
of life with a focus on the characteristics of each
group. They will be able to classify organisms into Kingdoms based on their characteristics.
HUMANITIES –
We have quite a few students who have lost their jumpers and jackets throughout this year. We strongly recommend including names on all uniform items (especially tops/jumpers/jackets) and if you could please double check the uniform that is at home and to see if it may have accidentally been collected by the wrong student.
FUTURE LEARNING:
Students will be progressing their knowledge of water in the world, and how the access of water can differ according to where you live.
PE/SWIMMING – Swimmers – students will be experiencing what it feels like to be in the water whilst
wearing clothing. Students will need to bring a long sleaved top and pants (pyjamas work well), anything they
can wear over their bathers and get wet.

Silent Reading
Year 8 staff members are encouraging students to start the day, during Form Group, by reading a book which they have selected from either the extensive collection of books within the library or by bringing a book from home. Twenty minutes of silent, sustained reading is quite beneficial to the students. According to studies in the educational field, students who are given time to silently read have far better grades than other students. At the conclusion of the reading time, students are asked to completed a reading activity, and make a record of this within their Team Time workbook.
PBS Coupons
The students are keenly earning, and many cases, exchanging their
PBS coupons, that they receive from Kurnai staff, when they display
a behaviour from the Four Pillars – Relationships, Engagement,
Excellence, or Work Ethic – for a prize from the display cupboard,
which is the Wellbeing Office. Each week, during Team Time,
students are given the opportunity to ‘cash’ in their coupons. At
present, the most popular item from the cupboard, is the chocolate.
The number of coupons required for the chocolate is 10 coupons.
At the end of week 3 the following are the top 5 students for Year 8.
Liam Heffernan- 71
Hayley Donnelly – 56
Darci Kovacevic – 49
Hannah Meddings– 44
Jaz Brazier – 44
A reminder to all Year 8 students that when they receive a ticket that they need to write their name on the ticket and then place it into the PBS box, which is located in the Library.
Dental Visit
On Friday the 28th July the Year 8 students were involved in a presentation about the importance of dental health. The following piece of writing was written by one of the students who participated in the session.
In the dental session I learnt it is very important to brush
your teeth, because if you don’t you will get holes in your
teeth, which can be pretty painful. Also he said that you’re
meant to floss before you brush your teeth because you get it
done faster and it is more effective on your teeth. Another
thing he said was that it’s good to brush your tongue so you
don’t have bad breath. Overall I thought was a good thing to
do because more kids know how to brush their teeth properly.
When we are kids we have 20 teeth. When we are adults we
have 32 teeth. Overall people learnt a lot from that and now
people will have clean teeth.

Zoo visit by Chinese Language Classes
On the 2nd of August, a group of Year 8 students who are currently studying Chinese had a fantastic day in Melbourne and they were lucky to also experience some nice weather. To start with, the students went to the zoo and spent about 2 hours exploring the different sections. The students then caught the train back to the Melbourne CBD and had a fantastic lunch at one of the Chinese restaurants. The students were well behaved and they are going to use their experiences to help them respond to questions about animals in class.
A reminder to call our ABSENCE HOTLINE 5132 3711 preferably before 9am if your child is not going to be at school.
This will ensure your child’s absence is recorded correctly and you don’t receive a phone call from our office

Year 9 News ………. On Tuesday August 1st, many of our Year 9 students went to the Job Skills
Expo at Lardner Park where they had the chance to speak to experts in
many
careers and collect information on pathways of study they may wish take in
the future. There were many exhibitors from emergency services, the
defence forces and many tertiary institutions e.g. Federation University etc.
The students were very well behaved and enjoyed this opportunity.
The next round of GPA reports will be open at the end of the week. We are all working together to ensure students are working towards improving their overall scores. If we can help in any way please contact us a.s.a.p. Students have set three goals with strategies for semester two to improve their future reports. Well done to all the students who have improved their scores!
This year the Year 9 team members are: Sheryl Tangi (Team Leader Maths / Science), Robin Fitzpatrick (Assistant Team Leader, Health/ PE and Science), Dave Frendo (Technology) and Olivia Wall (English, Humanities and SWPBS), Greg Matulich (ICT and Maths), Joseph Bonnici (Music) and Ian Hopkins (Music).

Young Inspiring Women
On the 26th of July 8 year 10 students from Kurnai along with many other schools went to a Young Inspiring
Women dinner. While we were there we got to speak to successful women from a range of careers. We were
all seated at a table and the experienced women changed tables a few times throughout the night. This
allowed us to have the chance to speak to women who weren’t originally on our table.
I had the chance to speak to a professional cook who was on MasterChef in 2013. All the women we talked to
either told us their story and how they got there and/or gave us advice. While we were seated, we all did
group activities exploring things about ourselves. As a table, we discussed issues including how women are
seen in the media. We talked about how we can stop negative views of women, ‘It’s all but the body and not
the brain’. Then we reported back to the group.
Overall it was a really good night. All the students went away with something that can help then in life.

TRAVELLERS - STUDENT ID CARDS OR VALID MYKI ON TOWN SERVICES
As part of our local arrangement with Latrobe Valley Bus Lines the College provides eligible students who travel from Morwell to University Campus, or Morwell to Morwell Campus (must live over 4.8 km and attend their closest school) with an ID Card.
ID Card must be carried with students each day to show to the Bus Driver and or representatives from Public Transport Victoria if requested. If students do not have their card available when asked, they may be issued with a fine from Public Transport Victoria or your Bus Driver may refuse travel.
Travelling without payment is called Fare Evasion.
We have been advised that our area has a high rate of Fare Evasion and PTV Officers could be on local buses. Please ensure that your child is compliant and that they carry their College ID Card or a valid MYKI Card at all times when travelling on buses to and from home.
Lost ID card? These can be replaced for $5 by requesting one at the General Office.

It’s flu season again and I’m sure many of you are feeling the effects!
How do you know if it’s the flu?
Chills, shivering and fever (a temperature greater than 38 degrees)
Headache and muscle aches
Sore throat
Sneezing, blocked or runny nose
Coughing
Tiredness
Trouble breathing
The worst thing about the flu is that you have to ride it out letting your body deal with it and also that it ’s
highly contagious. This can mean that while parents/guardians are sick, they also have to look after
sick children.
How can you prevent the spread of the flu?
Cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze
Wash your hands
Don’t share personal items – e.g. towels, bedding, drinks
Clean surfaces regularly – door knobs, benches, taps
Avoid close contact with others – try to stay at least 1 meter away and avoid going out if you are sick
For more information on the flu, please go to www.health.vic.gov.au
