I would also like to welcome Dr Carlos Zurbaran to the Far West Local Health District who has taken on the role of Clinical Director for the Mental Health Service. Dr Farook has travelled from Queensland to work for the term and has brought his young family with him for 10 weeks so we welcome them to the cooler clime of a desert winter.

achieve this and we appreciate the hard work of the many presenters.

Dr Sarah Wenham Director of Prevocational Education Training and JMO Manager Jeff King were the lead presenters on the first day covering clinical responsibilities.

The group also spent time in their wards in the morning meeting the staff and orientating to the work space.

The orientation week also included afternoon sessions on Psychiatry

from Dr Peter Vaux, and Cultural Orientation from Denise Hampton and Mariah Goldsworthy. Documentation and Privacy and Confidentiality was also presented by Marg Hoey and Carolyn Williams.

Our thanks to all these people who make the effort every 10 weeks to make the new cohort welcome and deliver the material needed to get them the best start in Broken Hill.

The LHD has welcomed Geneen Lynch Reyna who has joined the Specialist Palliative Care Team as a Bereavement Counsellor.

Geneen is a Psychologist with extensive experience as a Palliative Care Bereavement Counsellor in large hospice settings in the United States, and more recently, has worked in private practice in Queensland. Geneen and her husband Rafael have moved to Broken Hill from Queensland.

The NSW Ministry of Health has funded each Local Health District to employ Bereavement Counsellors to work in Specialist Palliative Care Services.

This is a new role for Far West LHD, and Geneen will spend her first few weeks working with the Broken Hill team to develop a model of care that sits within the Specialist Palliative Care Service. The role will provide bereavement counselling to individuals, families and groups whose loved one has received Specialist Palliative Care Services, and who have more complex bereavement needs. Initially, referrals will come from within the Specialist Care Team, although these carers or family will also be able to self-refer.

Melissa Cumming, Director Cancer and Palliative Care Services said: “Formal bereavement counselling for family or carers, particularly those with more complex needs after a palliative care patient has died, has been an identified gap in the service.

“To have a Palliative Care Bereavement Counsellor of Geneen’s calibre join our team is very exciting, and will add another dimension to the multidisciplinary service we provide to our community. We welcome Geneen to our team and to Broken Hill”.

The Far West LHD has had two staff members recently graduate from The Next Generation of Leaders and Managers Program.

Umer Qureshi, Acting Human Resources Manager and Emma Clynch, former Human Resources Officer, attended the graduation ceremony in Sydney on 30 May, 2019.

Umer and Emma were initially chosen to be part of the Program in 2017 after being shortlisted as the Far West LHD’s nominees.

The Program, organised by HETI, intended to assist emerging leaders to advance their skills and knowledge to improve health service delivery in NSW. Both Umer and Emma completed the two-year program which saw their achievements culminate in the completion of a Diploma of Leadership and Management.

The first year of the program was for participants to undertake a Business Improvement Project within their LHD. Umer focused on the introduction of new functionality for Blood Lead Level Monitoring within the electronic medical record, and Emma created two websites, a Career portal and one for onboarding new employees to the Far West LHD.

The second portion of the program saw Umer and Emma consolidate their extensive knowledge base through participation in a peer consultation group, using the ‘inquiring structure’ when meeting with health consumers and applying ‘design thinking’ principles when working as part of a strategic challenge team. Assisted by Western NSW LHD’s Allied Health and Innovation Portfolio, Emma and Umer developed a brief on furthering research opportunities across numerous sectors within the Western NSW LHD, whilst facing strategic and logistical challenges in the brief’s completion.

Both Umer and Emma have gained an enhanced knowledge of the NSW Health system and the importance of delivering patient-centred outcomes. Their new learnings will further enhance their careers, enabling them to utilise their increased skills and abilities in improving health service delivery within NSW Health.

Congratulations Emma and Umer!

Denise McCallum (pictured) has been appointed to the role of General Manager, District Health Services (previously General Manager, Lower Western Sector).

Denise has a vast knowledge of the District and has many years of experience working within the Nursing Directorate and most recently with Integrated Care.

Denise will start in the role as of 22 July 2019 and will be located at the Broken Hill Community Health Centre. You can contact Denise via Katherine Leo, Clinical Support Officer [email protected] or (08) 8080 2241. Congratulations to Denise on her new role within the FWLHD Senior Executive Team.

Marg Hoey, District Health Information Manager, is leaving Broken Hill for Western LHD and friends and colleagues gathered to give her a farewell morning tea.

Marg came to Far West LHD 3 ½ years ago for a one month secondment, and decided to stay. We are glad she did because under her leadership we have improved our processes and systems with medical records and data, and as we know, the accuracy of our data is vitally important to ensuring we are funded appropriately for the services we provide.

Marg was also integral to the removal of medical and other paper records from Kincumber House before it was demolished last year, which led to the highlight of her career – a lined shed with new shelving to store files.

We thank Marg for her calm approach to getting things done, and her extensive experience will be missed. We wish her well as she returns to Parkes to take on another HIM role.

New District Health Services Manager

One of our longest serving volunteers is taking a step back from her role as Hospital Visitor at BH Hospital.

Mrs Pam Lord has been volunteering as a BH Women’s Auxiliary RFDS Broken Hill Hospital Visitor for

over 50 years. She is reducing her time as a visitor to spend more time with her husband. Another person will be taking the lead as the BH Women’s Auxiliary RFDS Hospital Visitor.

The health service is extremely grateful for Mrs Lord’s contribution and dedication in her role as a hospital visitor.

“Mrs Lord’s devotion over a long period of time is

simply outstanding and we can’t say thank you enough to

her for all she has done,” said CE Steve Rodwell. “To give so much time to help others and the health service is remarkable. Mrs Lord is a valuable member of our community and is well known and respected by all in the health service. We cannot overstate our appreciation.”

On her 50th anniversary in 2015 of being a Hospital

Visitor, the LHD established the Far West LHD & Pamela Lord Volunteer of the Year Award in recognition of her many years of volunteering. The award has been presented each year since then.

We wish all the best to Mrs Lord.

On 18 June 2019, five more staff attended a three-hour workshop to learn how to collect stories from patients, carers and staff on their health care experiences through appreciative enquiry using emotional touch points.

We evaluate the care that patients receive by compliments, complaints, audits, surveys and incident reports. Collecting stories of patient, family or carer experiences of the care they have received is another way to evaluate the care experience and identify areas for celebration and improvement. The emotional narrative of a patient experience often provides the trigger to inspire change within teams.

Collecting staff stories allow our fellow staff and managers to celebrate things that require celebration or provides the trigger for reflection and

change. How can we provide First Class health care if our staff are not engaged and empowered to be the best that they can be?

Feedback from participants was

positive and staff now feel more confident to collect stories with the tools provided.

This was also the first time where we used videoconference as a method for remote staff to participate in this workshop. Whilst we had a few initial technical difficulties, the overall delivery of this workshop was well received - it is very interactive.

If you are interested to tell your story; have a patient or their family or carer who wish to share their story, or to learn to collect story’s or just want to know some more, please contact [email protected]

Health Promotion staff conducted a presentation in early June to a group of enthusiastic staff in the LHD on the Get Healthy Information Coaching Service (GHiCS).

The presentation highlighted different facets of information provided by the GHiCS, and how referrals by health professionals can improve health outcomes for patients and clients.

FWLHD Performance Agreement has annual Tier Two Key Performance Indicators for the number of health professional referrals to GHiCS. Staff referring to the GHiCS can access a variety of rewards based on numbers of referrals made through ‘The Collectables’ campaign.

This information session was the first to be delivered in the FWLHD, with plans to deliver additional presentations via video conference to all health service facilities and services in the district.

For more information please contact Health Promotion Officer Rebecca Crawford on 08 8080 1217 or [email protected]

Allied Health clinicians get to grips with media training Broken Hill Allied Health clinicians were successful in obtaining a $5,000 training grant in the 2018 HETI Allied Health

Workplace Learning Grant Program. The Allied Health Workplace Learning Grant Program provides financial support to teams of Allied Health professionals and Assistants seeking to further develop their knowledge and skill through workplace opportunities.

The grant was spent on media training, as part of an ongoing process to continue to develop senior and emerging Allied Health Clinicians as leaders of the future. The Allied Health Management team have a continued focus on the development of core interpersonal (people) skills. It is hoped that this will continue to form a foundation of professional development within the vast skill set of Allied Health clinicians for the Far West.

In collaboration with Adelaide-based media company Corporate Conversations, a group of 10 Allied Health clinicians attended a 3 hour theory and practical media training session on 18 June with consultant Ben Hooper.

The training assisted in the development of key messaging, interview skills and how to work with the different types of media. The session proved to be a great success with great energy and skills learnt throughout the day.

How to get the best out of a media interview was the focus of practical exercises during the media

training sessions.

The BH Health Service is calling for Urgent Expressions of Interest for the BH Patient Family Support Volunteer Program.

The Patient Family Support program is a support structure for families of patients who are critically ill and present to the Emergency Department, offering comfort, practical and emotional support for the patient’s family, after hours.

This is a valuable program for our clients who visit our health service and I encourage staff who are interested in volunteering to consider this opportunity as we only have two staff available for the July roster. For further information please contact Darriea Turley, Manager Community Engagement, 0429 848 480 ASAP.

Back in July 2018 the FWLHD submitted a Proposal through AFM Online Theraputic Environments Minor Capital Works Project (TEMCWP) for funding to improve the environment in the Mental Health Inpatient Unit

The FWLHD has now successfully completed the TEMCWP through AFMO and secured funding to the value of $115 000 from NSW Health Infrastructure.

Over the past 9 months patients have been consulted with and decisions made to purchase Furniture Fittings and Equipment (FF&E) that would improve the environment and experience at Broken Hill Inpatient Ward

Improvements such as furniture, therapy equipment, multimedia equipment and external environment equipment (pictured) have been purchased and installed through the TEMCWP funding

Feedback from Patients and Staff is already showing that improvements to the environment have been made and equipment is being fully utilised, leading to happier patient experiences.

Clowning around in a hospital is generally frowned upon and attracts the fun police — but not when the Clown Doctors are visiting!

Dr Boogie and Dr Sneeze dropped in on BH Hospital and brought their unique brand of magical humour to children and other patients. They were an instant hit with the kids and staff didn’t escape their playful humour either.

The Clown Doctor program is provided by the Humour Foundation, an Australian charity dedicated to bringing the health benefits of humour to the community.

It was the first time the Far West was included on their tour program (thanks to generous support from the Moose Toys Foundation) and may not be the last judging by the success!

Protective Behaviours Program workshop being run The LHD is again running a Protective Behaviours and

Personal Safety Program for 6-9 year olds. This program helps children recognise when their personal space and sense of safety may be at risk. It focuses on everyone feeling safe, being safe and talking about it. The program is based on two main principles:

1. We all have the right to feel safe all of the time 2. Nothing is so awful that we can’t talk about it with

someone. The program will be held Tuesdays starting at 3.30pm from

23 July 2019 for five weeks, ending on 20 August 2019. It will be held at the Broken Hill Community Health Centre, 2-4 Sulphide Street. The program is for children 6-9 years old and a parent or carer must attend each session with the child/ren. Facilitators are Georgia (Sexual Assault Counsellor) phone 8080 1609 and Geena (Sexual Assault Counsellor) phone 8080 1290.

This Essential Youth Healthcare Skills training workshop was developed as part of the Youth Health Training Initiative (YHTI), which commenced in 2015.

The YHTI aims to build the capacity of the NSW Health workforce to better understand, identify and respond to the health needs of young people.

The NSW Health key documents which guide the implementation of this training initiative include:

NSW Youth Health Framework 2017-2024

Healthy, Safe and Well: A Strategic Health Plan for Children, Young People and Families 2014-24

Youth Health Competency Framework (2015)

Building the Health Workforce Capacity on Youth Health Scoping Study Report (2014)

Access Study: Youth Health — Better Practice Framework (2011).

This Training Workshop supports state-wide youth health capacity building by providing youth health training

coordinators and trainers with the essential resources required to deliver a one day training session targeting the core and universal competencies outlined in the Youth Health Competency Framework (2015).

This updated version of the Training Workshop supports the implementation of the NSW Youth Health Framework 2017-2024 which has three goals:

1. The health system responds to the needs of young people, including targeted responses for vulnerable young people

2. Health services are accessible and young people are engaged and respected

3. Young people are supported to optimise their health and wellbeing.

There is one more session of the Essential Youth Healthcare Training on offer in 2019:
