This report showcases the many accomplishments of the MCNHR and its members since our last report in February 2014. The 24 pages it took to produce this report is a testament to the hard work of so many involved in the MCNHR from our members to our staff. The last few months have been a time of renewal and change with MCNHR staffing. We were sad to say good-bye to our administra-tive secretary, Lisa-Wolfe Ulrich, but are happy to welcome Lisa Andrade into this role. We are also pleased to welcome Hannah Curtis, Veronika Zot and Caitlyn Farr as our summer students. Our staff has been the backbone of a number of MCNHR activities in-cluding our annual Researcher in Residence Event, the MCNHR/WRHA Collaborative Research Day and our annual grant competi-tion, all of which are highlighted in this report. We are very pleased to report that with the generous support of the Faculty of Nursing Endowment Fund and other sources of funding, we were able to fund a record number of graduate students. A total of seven graduate students received research funding for their the-sis or dissertation projects in the MCNHR annual grant competition in the Spring. We also want to thank all the MCNHR members who volunteered to serve as MCNHR research grant reviewers on our four research grant panels. The MCNHR is working on three new initiatives: 1.) an application to become a Joanna Briggs Institute Collaborating Centre for Evi-dence Reviews 2.) a new strategic research plan for the MCNHR 3.) new strategies to future advance collaborative partnerships in-cluding launching a new Collaborations Database and a Collabora-tive Health Research for our annual MCNHR grant competition. We hope to continue to make progress on these areas in the near future!

MCNHR Collaborations Database: A New Portal for Research or Quality Improvement Projects or Ideas!

The Manitoba Centre for Nursing and Health Research has developed a new collabora ons database. The purpose of the Collabora ve Research and Quality Improvement Database is to increase collabora ons on new and exis ng projects and to foster collabora ons for fu-ture projects. The database is a forum for researchers, clinicians and administrators to register a project or idea with the MCNHR and invite others to collaborate as part of the team. This database can be used by researchers, clinicians and administers to help foster the development of a collabora ve team for a research or quality improvement project. This database can also be used by graduate students to help iden fy opportuni es for research including projects that can be pursued as part of their thesis and disserta on research. The MCNHR was pleased to host Dr. Brenda Roe as the 2014 Dr. Helen Glass Researcher in Residence.

Brenda Roe, PhD, MSc, BSc (Hons), RN, RHV, FRSH

2014 Dr. Helen Glass Researcher in Residence Professor of Health Research, Edge Hill University, United Kingdom

Dr. Roe is a Fellow of the Queen’s Nursing Institute and Fellow of the Royal Society for Public Health. She is an Editor of the Journal of Advanced Nursing and was one of the founding editors of the Cochrane Incontinence Review Group (1996-2000) with particu-lar responsibility for reviews on behavioural interven-tions for the management of urinary incontinence. She has served as an invited member on a number of international consultations, government and research council committees, recently on the MRC College of Experts for the Health Services and Public Health Re-

search Board (2006-2009) and Co-Chaired the NHS R&D Programme Services for Older People in Primary Care co-ordinated by Halton and St Helens PCT (2005-2008). Brenda has been a Non-Executive Director for a number of Health Authorities and NHS Trusts. She was awarded a Har-vard Education Center Fellowship, Department of Health Postdoctoral Research Fellowship, World Health Organisation Fellow and received the RCN/Molnlycke award for excellence in continence care. She has been an invited visiting international scholar at the Universities of Washington, USA; Alberta, Canada; Deakin and Edith Cowan, Australia. She is an honorary fellow at the Personal Social Services Research Unit, University of Manchester and Non-Executive Director of Mersey Care NHS Mental Health Trust. The Research in Residence Program grew out of the dinner in 2004 to honor Dr. Helen Preston Glass who had requested that the money raised be used to establish a Researcher in Residence program. Special thanks to Dr. Glass for creating the vision and legacy for a Researcher in Resi-dence Program to promote excellence in nursing research in Manitoba. The 2014 event attracted health professionals from across the province and research colleagues from many different dis-ciplines.

On May 23, 2014, the MCNHR and WRHA hosted a Re-search Day on Building Successful Research Partner-ships with over 90 clinicians, managers, researchers and students in attendance. The Research Day sponsored by the Manitoba Centre for Nursing and Health Research (MCNHR), Faculty of Nursing, University of Manitoba, and the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority (WHRA) was held at the Faculty of Nursing, University of Manitoba. The day began with opening remarks from Dr. Beverly O’Connell, Dean, Faculty of Nursing and Krista Williams, on behalf of Winnipeg Regional Health Authority Nursing Leadership, and a keynote presentation from Dr. Brenda Roe, the 2014 Dr. Helen Preston Glass Researcher in

Residence. Dr. Roe delivered an engaging presentation on Continence Care: An Evidence Syn-thesis of Cochrane Reviews on bladder training and toileting programmes. The day continued with brief oral presentations on research and quality improve-ments projects that involved successful partnerships and collaborative teams. The concurrent sessions featured a total of 17 collaborative projects. Presenters rose to the challenge of sharing how their project exemplified building a successful partnership in only 6 minutes and 3 PowerPoint slides. The format of the brief presentations proved remark-ably successful: Presenters used incredible energy and ex-citement to highlight the main aspects of their project. The research day also included a poster session showcas-ing research and quality improvement projects across Manitoba and provided ample opportunity for networking, dialogue and exchange. The afternoon of the Collaborative Research Day focused on “Seeding Ideas for Collaborative Teams” which provided an exciting opportunity to gather valu-able feedback and input into an research, quality improvement or clinical issue that is at the “idea”

stage. Following the presentations of all “Seeding Ideas”, presenters were asked to lead a roundtable discussion on the “idea” to further develop the idea and to identify next steps. The day concluded with presenters/leaders report-ing back of highlights from the round table discussions, followed by concluding remarks. A huge thank-you to all our generous sponsors, planning committee members, volunteers, presenters and attendees without which we would have been able to make the MCNHR and WRHA Research Day an overwhelming success.

Congratulations to Rachel Usick, 4th year nursing stu-dent and former summer intern and research assistant with the MCNHR for being selected to honor two of her teachers at the annual “Student-Teacher Recognition Reception” on May 7. The Student-Teacher Recognition Reception features outstanding students from faculties

across campus, each of whom honor two teachers: One from their K-12 years and another from their university education. Rachel chose to honor her grade eight teacher from Tanner’s Crossing School, Min-nedosa, Mr. Greg Lawson. Congratulations MCNHR staff

The MCNHR is most pleased to nominate Veronika Zot as a recipient of a 2014-2015 CIHR Health Professional Student Research Award. The purpose of the CIHR Health Professional Student Research Awards are to further strengthen health professional research capacity in the area of patient-oriented research by supporting research training to health pro-fessionals and strengthen talent development. As one of only five Univer-sity of Manitoba recipients of the CIHR Health Professional Student Re-search Award, Veronika is working with Dr. Diana Clarke on study exam-ining the Impact of Community-based Mental Health Services on Health Sciences Centre Emergency Department Psychiatric Emergency Nursing Services.

Hannah Curtis, this year’s Summer Research Intern is the recipient of the 2014/2015 Gamma Dynacare Medical Laboratories Scholarship. She was one of only 18 recipients across Canada. Hannah’s volunteer expe-rience, community contributions, work experience and extra curricular activities were valuable assets to her well rounded application.

MCNHR Research Strategic Planning The Manitoba Centre for Nursing and Health Research (MCNHR) is updating its current strategic research plan which was developed in 2008, so that as we move forward, we are building on our existing strengths and developing new areas of excellence. As part of the strategic planning process, we are consulting widely with our key stakeholders and invite you to provide comments and input into the following questions: What does the MCNHR do best? What makes the MCNHR unique? What should the MCNHR focus on, continue to do, or do differently as we look into the future? An online survey with a link to these questions has been sent out to all MCNHR stakeholders including Research and Profes-sional affiliates and graduate students. The MCNHR is establishing a strategic planning working group to review stakeholder feedback and assist in creating a new vision and plan for the future. man, and Nicole Shead. All faculty and staff were welcomed to come attend and hear some of the exciting work that the students have been involved in.

MCNHR Graduate Student Poster Competition

The Manitoba Centre for Nursing and Health Research (MCNHR) Graduate Student Poster Competition is held in conjunction with the Helen Glass Re-searcher in Residence event. The competition is open to all current or recent (within the last year) graduate students in the Faculty of Nursing or PhD pro-gram in Applied Health Sciences, Interdisciplinary PhD, or PhD in Cancer Con-trol whose advisor is a member of the Faculty of Nursing.
