Howdy, Partners! Summer is in full swing here at Latigo. Ropes, dust, fur and bull guacamole are flying. Horses are soaking in the sun, cold beverages are chilling on ice and cowgirls are turning barrels faster than ever! So, you may be wondering how you can get in on the action. The answer is simple… check out our www.atlatigo.com event calendar for the goings on. Then point yer pickup truck in the right direction and step on it. If you’ve seen our parking lot on a weekend, all trucks seem to find their way here. While you’re here at Latigo, stop in & see Taylor Meeske for some custom leather goods at T.M. Leather, teach your horse good manners with Wendy Ducy at Ducy Horse Training, treat your horse to a set of shiny new shoes at Oleo Acres Farrier Supply, get a good deal on gently used tack at Equi-line, fine tune your saddle at High Plains Saddlery, and of course wet your whistle at the Longbranch Tavern & Grill. If ridin’ & ropin’ ain’t yer thing, you might like the annual Pikes Peak Range Riders Foundation Golf Tournament held at Cheyenne Shadows Golf Club at Fort Carson on August 19th. News from the Pikes Peak Rangerettes!

Parades, Street Breakfast, and Rodeo

The Pikes Peak Rangerettes have been busy with parades, rodeos,

clinics, practices, and events all to promote the Pikes Peak or Bust

Rodeo, the Range Riders, and our western heritage. In March they

participated in the St. Patty’s Day parade downtown and conducted

the first fundraiser of the year—selling photos to the Range Riders

and friends at the Cowboy Ball. Thanks to all the people that pur-

chased photos! On April 3rd, the Rangerettes were treated to a “How

to be a Great Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo Ambassador” clinic put on

by past Rangerette, Stacy Reid Bandock. Stacy is a past Girl of the

West and Miss Rodeo Colorado! On April 22nd, our Rangerettes

volunteered at the PPTRC fashion show, and on April 29th they

volunteered at Live at Latigo.

On May 7th, they posted at the Blue Jeans and Brass fundraiser.

That day, Waldrons Family Studio took individual and team

photographs for our 2016 Rangerette poster. On May 12th, the

Rangerettes volunteered at the Western Spirit Mixer at the ProRodeo

Hall of Fame. On June 1st, they participated in the annual street

breakfast token presentation followed by passing out rodeo

information up and down the streets of downtown Colorado Springs.

They wore the new Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo T-shirts provided by

Axio to market the rodeo while walking downtown. On June 3rd, the

ladies posted at Cowgirls and Cocktails as the attendees drove

through the line of Rangerettes in pink. Afterward, they volunteered

at the event. On June 4th, the Rangerettes rode all day at the

Elizabeth Stampede Rodeo. They rode in the Parade, then practiced

their drill, ate a fabulous potluck, then performed their drill twice just

prior to the beginning of the rodeo. They passed out Rangerette

posters and enjoyed the day’s activities. That evening they closed

the rodeo performing their drill after the bull riding.

The Rangerettes rode in the Cripple Creek Top of the World Rodeo

on June 11th and 12th where they camped overnight! At Cripple

Creek they rode in the rodeo parade and performed their drill both

Saturday and Sunday to exuberant applause from the crowd. The

Rangerettes had fun in Cripple Creek having dinner at Maggie’s,

dancing at the street dance, swimming in the hotel pool, making

s’mores by the camp fire, and having breakfast at the Cripple Creek

Fire House.

On June 15th, the Rangerettes rode in the Colorado Springs Western

Street Breakfast Parade and volunteered at the Range Rider After

Ride Dinner where their Drillmaster auctioned off a pair of

Rangerette breast collars to raise money for the Rangerette

Scholarship fund. Thanks to the generous Range Rider Guest, Gary

Guagenti, and Range Rider, Mark Scheffe, for purchasing the breast

collars! Kayla Summers, Caitlin McLellan, Marina Rendon, and

Kelsy Wells were awarded Rangerette college scholarships from the

Pikes Peak Range Riders Foundation. Congratulations to Kayla,

Caitlin, Marina, and Kelsy!

On June 18th, the Rangerettes painted their stall signs for the Pikes

Peak or Bust at Paint the Town. On June 25th, the ladies went back

to Cripple Creek for the Donkey Derby Days Parade. On July 4th the

Rangerettes rode in the Monument 4th of July Parade. They were

very excited to ride in the Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo Parade and the

Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo from July 13th through the 16th!

Cindy Best led us in purchasing two new performance shirts—a new

Pink Night shirt from Cruel Girl with the Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo

logo on it and a new blue Rockmount western shirt. We added

mirrored aviator sunglasses to our accessories which the ladies wear

during sunny parades and rodeos. We also purchased new dresses

for the ladies from Rod’s to wear during formal volunteer events.

Thanks to Corliss Palmer who helped the Rangerettes purchase

name tags so that each lady can be identified at formal events. A

special thank you, also, to the Range Rider Board, especially Chris

Whitney and Dwayne Watson, for making updates to our club

handbook.

We have added some new sponsors for 2016: Monson

Manufacturing, Crippen’s Processing of Lake George, The Renuart

Group, and Colorado Peak Real Estate. We are honored to thank

our sponsors: Boot Barn, Double M Concrete, Colorado Equine

Veterinary Services, Northwestern Mutual Financial Network,

Affordable Fuels, Vectra Bank, Crossed Cannons Appaloosas,

Scheffe’s Roofing, OfficeScapes, Facial Plastic Surgery Center,

Vantage Homes, Latigo, Monson Manufacturing, Crippen’s

Processing of Lake George, The Renuart Group, Colorado Peak

Real Estate and Pikes Peak Range Riders, Waldrons Family Studio,

Colorado Saddlery, Cruel Girl, Justin Boots, and Continental

Cleaners. Thank you for helping these ladies live out their cowgirl

dreams and support their college scholarship fund!

We are currently at 19 members. However, we are always recruiting new members. Please have interested ladies that own a horse, between the ages of 12 to 20, check out our web page at www.pikespeakrangerettes.com and come visit us at a practice.

PPRR President’s Update

The 68th Annual Range Ride began seemingly as usual, in downtown Colorado Springs with 147 horses

and riders. What many people may not know is that this is the first year that the Street Breakfast was

facilitated without participation of the Pikes Peak Sertoma Club. Kevin Kaveney and Travis Weins head-

ed up the first solo run of the Colorado Springs Western Street Breakfast under the structural umbrella

of the Pikes Peak Range Riders Foundation. My appreciation goes out to the efforts of the dedicated

crew who made the event successful at several levels, and to the Foundation Board of Directors for

assisting us in this transition.

The ride itself took place at the JV Ranch in Tarryall, Colorado, where we were hosted by the Venezia

Family. This was our third attempt at returning to the Tarryall region since our last ride there in 1992,

which was ironically the last ride attended by Member John Venezia before his untimely death. We

attempted to return to the region in 2005 under President Guy Dobbin, but were met with logistical

problems that caused us to change the ride location to the Campbell Ranch in Guffey, Colorado, a

blessing in disguise that has created a long-standing relationship with the Campbell Family. The most

recent attempt was in 2012, when wildfires throughout the state caused us to change the ride location

to The Bear Basin Ranch in Westcliffe, Colorado, just seven days before the ride.

The return to Tarryall certainly proved to be worth the wait under the planning of Co-Ride Directors

Dean Venezia and Brad Renehan, with the assistance of their many Ride Committees that worked so

hard to make this ride an overall success. We not only enjoyed an incredible camp site filled with new

tents, and rode through some breath-taking scenery along the historic Colorado Trail, but we managed

to avoid so much as a drop of rain. The only measurable moisture was provided by the Tarryall River,

which not only created the camp boundary, but which also accommodated the bathing needs of some

of our more adventurous members and guests, proving once again that some sights can never be

unseen.

The Race and Layover games consisted of Team Sorting and Drifting events, Head to Head Pole Bending

and a two-person relay race, which not only provided for great entertainment, but culminated with our

Ride Director/Land Owner Host, Dean Venezia, being awarded the All-Around Cowboy Buckle.

I'm proud to declare this ride as a complete success, and would be remiss if I didn't also thank and

acknowledge the Operating Committees, our 2016 Board of Directors, the Camp, Commissary and

Wrangler Crews, and finally, the entire group of 160 participants of The 68th Annual Range Ride.

The excitement of summer has been in full swing. The Range Ride went well, and we all had a

great time at a great place. Thank you to JV Ranches and the Venezia family for a great ride

this year. The pivots were very busy in July and we looked forward to opening many shows.

First and foremost was the Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo. It was four days of fun and excitement

that started on July 13th. Then the Pivots moved to Manassa Days, in Manassa, Colorado. We

had two performances there on the weekend of July 23rd. Then we were off to Burlington for

the weekend of July 30th. We hoped you were able to catch some of these rodeos and join in

the fun of some of these performances.

As fall approaches, we will be planning the family ride to enjoy the great outdoors and cooler

weather. We will keep everyone updated as we move forward in another GREAT year of

performances and fun. Thank you goes out to all who have helped us make everything go as

smoothly as it has this year.

Art Silhouettes, Coloring Contest, Calendars, Mixer, and Parade

Spirit Committee Update

Participating in the silhouette art project were Air Academy, Colorado Springs Conservatory, Fountain-Fort Carson, Griffith Centers for Children, James Irwin, Lewis-Palmer, Miami-Yoder, Panorama, and St Mary’s; placing 1st was St. Mary’s, 2nd Fountain-Fort Carson and 3rd Air Academy Ceramics.

Businesses displaying the silhouettes were ProRodeo Hall of Fame, Big R (Fountain and Monument), Boot Barn (Academy), Cavenders, Clerk and Recorder (Airport and Powers), El Paso County Citizen Center (Garden of the Gods), Farmers State Bank (Calhan), Latigo, Plaza of the Rockies, and Wal-Mart (8th Street, Falcon and Woodland Park). The silhouettes were on display during the Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo.

Coloring contest entries increased 4X thanks to the support of Chick-fil-A. The mixer was declared a success and the plans are to work with Pikes Peak Range Riders and Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo to gain more support of the event. The silhouettes, coloring contests, and Kiddie Dress-Up winners were on a float in the Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo Parade.

Colorado Springs Western Street Breakfast

The transition from Sertoma to the Pikes Peak Range Riders was smooth, and the June 15 th street breakfast was by some reports the best yet. Attendance, sponsorships, and number of meals served were up; combine that with a committee that worked together as a team to make the breakfast successful and set the stage for continued growth. The street breakfast committee is very appreciative of the support of the Pikes Peak Range Riders Foundation.
