Message from the President Wai6ng for 45 degrees
Cold weather brings the season of handwork. We get 5me for kni7ng, rug making, weaving, spinners, croche5ng, sewing, and all of the things we didn’t get to in the summer because of outside ac5vi5es and projects we want to get done in the summer. It’s good to se@le down and do handicraA. Provided of course, that all the seasonal chores and projects are done.
Last week’s li@le cold snap was a nice li@le taste of winter. I heard a lot of moaning from various people as the cold went on, and I did a bit myself because this means I can no longer leave the chicken house door open at night. I have to go outside at first light and let them out or I’ll never hear the end of it because chickens are champion complainers. I also felt a bit anxious because I s5ll have a boatload of outside jobs to get done – and a job weighing heavily on my shoulders is the house pain5ng job I started in June.
Right now, while I’m working on this le@er, I’m wai5ng for 45 degrees. That’s the temperature I can paint at. Theore5cally, I should wait un5l the walls of the house are warm, and I do. I wait a good 15 – 20 minutes aAer my thermometer reaches 45 degrees and then I’m out pain5ng. The paint’s in the house, nice and warm, the ladder’s in place (I really am 5red of climbing up and down), and the brush conveniently wrapped in plas5c for ac5on. I’m almost done and I can taste the end of the chores so that I can sit down and knit this marvelous vest I’m working on with a clear conscious. I am almost done.
It’s almost 45 degrees outside. Let’s get those seasonal chores done so we can “knit our marvelous vest” with a calm knowing that this is our 5me to relax and be makers of art. Doing handwork in the dark, cold days keeps us posi5ve. Crea5vity shines a light in our souls that the outside dimness can’t ex5nguish and, for some, it’s a 5me of much an5cipated rest and play. Summer and fall du5es are finished and it’s 5me to come inside. With warmth and love, Mary The Mesa Fiber Arts Guild is a non-‐profit organiza5on dedicated to the preserva5on of fiber arts: weaving, spinning, kni7ng, surface design, fiber dyeing and related fiber arts. The Guild seeks to advance fiber arts through shows, workshops, study groups, community involvement, and a monthly newsle@er.
MFAG Out in the Community! A Time of Outreach Over the past month I have added 21 new names to the email list – per their request. We have wonderful new members, had names from both Cross Orchards and the Art Center Demo Night ou5ng and random people who ask to be put on the list. At the same 5me, we have had people take a lot of our business cards; almost all the cards I took with us to Cross Orchards were taken. Yeah for us!
Ac5vi5es like these, as well as the Holy Family CraA Fair and the presenta5on Dean and I did at the Job Corps, make a las5ng and posi5ve impact on people – more than we can know. There are a lot of fiber folks in the Grand Valley and informing them about like-‐minded people promotes a great sense of community and the forma5on of a fiber-‐arts “clan”. We’ve had great a@endance at the last Knit and Spin Days and are forming a group for those who cannot a@end Wednesday mee5ngs. We are growing and loving it.
Thank you. Thank you to all of you who are able to par5cipate in the extra ac5vi5es and work hard to help out with
this outreach. I know that it takes 5me away from ac5vi5es you could be doing, but it is so very important to con5nue to promote and build our wonderful clan of fiber ar5sts. It’s rewarding to share with others the things that we love. Mary

KNITTERS/CROCHETERS: We meet at First Congrega5onal UCC from 9:30 – 11:30 on the 2nd Wednesday of each month. Please bring a few dollars to help defray our room rental cost.
SPINNERS: Spin group is open to any member who wants to learn to spin or who wants to hangout with us. We meet on the 3rd Wednesday of the month at the Congrega5onal Church across from Grand Junc5on High School. Please bring a few dollars to help pay for the room rental cost.
We are trying to make this group a learning experience and welcoming to all levels of spinners. The October mee5ng was an opportunity to ‘test drive’ the different wheels that Guild members own. We had a great turnout for this mee5ng, and hope this con5nues! Take a look below, and plan to come join us in November!
THE ROCKIN’ RUGGERS: The Rockin' Ruggers of Western Colorado have a new mee5ng loca5on! They will be mee5ng the second Saturday of the month at Black Sheep Handworx, which is located in the old R5 school at 310 N. 7th St, Unit 1. Mee5ng dates and 5mes for the subgroups are on the Google calendar, as well as other Guild events. We’re also including a printed Guild calendar with the newsle@er! Be sure to note mee5ng dates, as some have been adjusted to accommodate the holiday season.
November All-Guild Meeting Our next mee5ng program will feature Candy Tobin! Candy has spent the past fiAy years playing with fibers and colors in many forms. She has taught spinning ad dyeing workshops for guilds and conferences across the country, including Estes Park Wool Market, Taos Wool Fes5val, Convergence, Midwest Weaver’s Conference, SOAR, Intermountain Weaver’s Conference, and Florida Tropical Weavers. Candy will present on Color Play-‐ Tips for Making Color Work for you. You’ll learn how to mix colors to create combina5ons that will work for any fiber ar5st, kni@er, weaver, hooker, spinners, felter, or crocheter. You won’t want to miss this one! And be sure to put our December and January mee5ngs on your calendars-‐ we will be ‘traveling’ to the Shetland Islands and Iceland! We are s5ll seeking presenters for a couple of our spring mee5ngs.
