Dear members, Thank all the members of MALA for selecting me as the President of this prestigious Library As- sociation and I also thank on behalf of the other members who have been selected along with me as office bearers. Greetings!

Dear members,

Thank all the members of MALA for selecting me as the President of this prestigious Library As-

sociation and I also thank on behalf of the other members who have been selected along with me as office

bearers. In this juncture I wish to state that I will try my level best to bring MALA to the fore front with

very ambitious projects. For achieving this we need to believe three aspects. Unity, Progress and accom-

plishment. Dear members I expect all of you will share my aspirations and escalate MALA to new

heights. The new committee meets regularly every month and discusses about the development and activi-

ties to be taken in future. In this connection the committee has decided to conduct Seminars, Workshops

and Conferences etc. every month. Our future plans involve several programmers and among that one

programmer is creating endowments for honouring Best Women Librarian, Best Academic Librarian,

Best Special/Technical Librarian and Best Differently abled Librarian with awards. In this connection,

the committee has decided to create an Endowment Fund of a minimum amount of Rs.25,000/-. The inter-

est from the amount will be utilized for honouring the professionals with awards. For this a proforma will

be prepared and professionals will fill up this proforma and send it a committee which will be constituted

for selecting the competent person for the award.

I request all the members to help us to create an “Endowment” which will be a milestone in the

history of MALA. I look forward for your support and co-operation so that MALA can achieve more in

future. MALA must march forward with team spirit and social responsibility for library profession.

History Of Madras Library Association

Madras Library Association(MALA) was

founded on 31st January 1928 BY Mr.

K.V. Krishnanswamy Aiyar and Dr. S.R.

Ranganathan. Its former president, the

late S.R. Ranganathan had earmarked

for the building fund a part of the

proceeds of the royalties earned by

his books. These funds finally provid-

ed the MALA in 1976, with premises

--- a wing of the Gokhale Shastri In-

stitue in Mylapore.

Objectives Of Madras Library Association

The main objectives of the Association are promotion of the library movement and creation of general awareness, especially among the rural public, of the benefits of using books and libraries. To achieve these, lectures, film shows, exhibitions, and other activities are organized.

RAJ ROY RAM MOHAN LIBRARY FOUNDATION: BRIEF PROFILE BY DR. V.R. RAJAN, DEPUTY LIBRARIAN( Retd), PONDICHERRY UNIVERSITY THE FOUNDATION: RRRLF is a central autonomous organization established and fully financed by the Ministry of Culture, Government of India. RRRLF is registered under the West Bengal Societies Registration Act, 1961. It is the nodal agency of the Government of India to support public library services and systems and promote public library movement in the country commensurate with the objectives as embodied in its Memorandum of Association. The supreme policy-making body of RRRLF is called the Foundation. It consists of 22 members nominated by the Government of India from amongst eminent educationists, librarians, administrators and senior officials. The Minister of the Department of Culture, Government of India or his nominee is the Chairman of RRRLF. Professor Brij Kishore Sharma is the present Chairman of RRRLF and Director General is the executive head and ex-officio Member-Secretary of the Foundation. The Foundation func-tions in each State/U.T. through a machinery called State Library Committee (SLC). The Foundation works in close association and active cooperation with different State Govts. and Union Territory Administrations through a machinery called State Library Planning Committee (SLPC/SLC) set up in each State at the instance of the Foundation. To participate in Foundation's programmes, a State Government/U.T. is required to contribute a certain amount fixed by the Foundation. Since 2005-06 the Foundation has also taken up the initiative to develop the District Youth Resource Centre (DYRC) in collaboration with Nehru Yuvak Kendra Sangathana, an autonomous organization un-der the Ministry of Sports & Youth Affairs.
