Twenty-five years! We are pleased to present our program for 2017. The first Swiss-Italian Festa was held in July 1993 as a part of the Daylesford – Hepburn Springs Winter Festival. Since that beginning, the Festa has grown in stature and has become an endearing part of the region’s cultural and community spirit.

The Festa owes much of its success to the continuing support of the Hepburn Shire and the Victorian Government (through the Department of Premier and Cabinet’s Multicultural Commission grants program). The Festa also enjoys strong support from many regional businesses and individual supporters. Without this support, it would not be possible to present our ambitious program. It is a rich celebration of the contribution made by those Swiss and Italian pioneers who settled in the region in the mid 19th century. Their legacy is still evident today in the buildings, food, music, art and the many descendant families who live in the region. A lasting influence of these early settlers is that Italian is still taught as a second lan-guage in the primary and secondary schoolsWe continue to present those events that have become so popular – the Grand Parade and Family Concert, the Landscape Art

prize, children’s drawing and landscape exhibitions, heritage walks, food and wine events, musical performances and historical presentations. The Festa gives schoolchildren, descend-ants of the pioneers, and all visitors many opportunities to learn about this rich cultural heritage. This year’s program of events has been designed to provide as much pleasure and interest as the past 24 festivals have. The small committee has been very fortu-nate to have the services of a highly profes-sional festival director, Rebecca Anderson. The committee thanks her very much for her untiring efforts. We hope that the 25th anniversary Festa in 2017 will be the most successful ever. Please enjoy the Festa and give it your full support.

SWISS ITALIAN LEGACIES WALK In the 1850s and 1860s many Italian speaking Swiss and northern Italians settled in the Hepburn Springs area (then called Spring Creek). The influence of these early settlers is still obvious through the names of many of our springs, buildings and landscape, as well as in the names of many of our fellow citizens. These walks, which have become an annual fixture, will trace some of the remaining places of Swiss Italian significance. Two walks are available; the longer more difficult walk will take about 2½ hours and will include both bush tracks and made roads; the easier walk, which includes all the significant sites, will take about 1½ hours and is mainly on made roads.

Both walks require a reasonable level of fitness.Walkers should dress appropri-ately for bush walking, wear sturdy foot-wear and bring water.

W H E N : 9am-12 midday, Friday 20th October (Followed by an optional lunch at Rubens@Hepburn) C O S T: The walk is free but bookings are essential. There will be a $25 Rubens@Hepburn Festa Meal Deal Lunch available after the walk. This offer includes a main meal and a glass of wine. Bookings to be made by calling the restaurant directly, (03) 5348 2843 W H E R E : The walk will assemble at 9am. The assembly point will be confirmed when you register your attendance.
