Hello summer!

Strawberries and cherries! Summer for me brings on childhood memories; biking, camping, swimming, long lazy days stretching out for what seemed like forever. “In the summer time when the weather is fine.”

Do you quilt over the summer; a little, a lot or not at all? The bright, cheery fabrics tempt me (ok, I have been collecting a few cherry themed, red and yellow fabrics) though I know I should start that Halloween quilt now.

What are your summer plans? Maybe you are doing a BC vacation, taking some time to explore our own Vancouver Island or spending more time in the garden. Your Guild Management Team have been busy setting up summer events for you to consider; Sew Days are starting up again, there are at least two more virtual workshops planned and an outdoor event is a possibility.

Hello quilters

I hope everyone is keeping well. I am pleased to be delivering quilts again. I recently dropped off to the Nanaimo hospital NICU 16 quilts, 28 premie wraps, 2 incubator covers and knit hats. Dialysis Unit got 10 quilts and Chemo Unit got 8. The ladies in charge of distributing them to the units were extremely happy! They emphasized how well received they are by the patients undergoing dialysis and chemo.

I have also delivered to Trillium, Eagle Park and Arrowsmith care homes. Each facility distributes them in unique ways. At one home every new resident gets one, at another they use them as birthday presents. Take satisfaction that your hard work is enriching the life of others.

I will continue to provide quilt kits etc. throughout the summer so send me an email and I will get back to you as soon as I can. Keep on "stitching" and enjoy the summer!

ITCHING TO GET BACK TO SEW DAYS Stay tuned, we are working hard to secure a venue so that we can provide our members with their

monthly Sew Day.

We will certainly have to maintain distancing and any other restrictions required by Worksafe BC and

the venue. I am quite sure we quilters will all do whatever we can to get our Sew Days back.

We will have to limit the numbers of attendants, therefore we will require a monthly pre-registration. There will be

no drop ins for the foreseeable future. When we have firmed up all the details, an on-line registration will be

available.

We are hoping for an August Sew Day; so watch for an e-cast notice or the Guild Facebook page for the

information about dates and registration.

News Flash! The Guild Management Committee is pleased to announce that we have secured

a venue for our Sew Days and have booked the following dates for 2020: Aug.7, Sept. 4, Oct. 2

and Nov 13. All sew days will be held at Parksville Community Center in the Arbutus/Garry

Oaks room from 9 am to 3 pm. Watch for an ecast for the details. We are limited to the

number of participants so will be pre-registering. No drop ins will be accepted only those

registered. Again, more information to follow through ecast, on the website and Facebook

page. WE ARE SO HAPPY TO HAVE OUR SEW DAYS BACK, somewhat different but back.

WORKSHOPS…..ZOOM!

The Glorious and Free workshop with Brandy Maslowski was held via Zoom on June 13th, 2020. It was such an amazing success! We had several non-members taking our innovative workshop format. They gave us rave reviews and we are sure their enthusiasm will carry forward to others in their Guilds about our terrific PQHQG. See the screen shot taken of the group that day. Three members

are missing from the photo (Elizabeth Murphy, RoseMary Slaney

and Narcis Kellow). The smiling face with the green highlight is our

instructor Brandy.


We have several workshops planned until December 2020 and

beyond. Please look at the Upcoming Workshops and look for

more information on the website if you are interested. We

hope you will consider giving the Zoom format a try if you have

not already! The presenters are helpful, you interact with

fellow quilters and best of all – you have not forgotten

something you need at home!

The small wall hanging is approximately 16 inches by 23 inches. It depicts a beautiful pine tree in autumn Joyce recalls from Ontario. Joyce wrote: “This pine tree grew on a small island on the lake and could be seen from our front porch. I love the contrast of bright green branches against the brilliant colours of deciduous trees be-hind it.” This project can be completed in one day by anyone famil-iar with free motion quilting, but if you have minimal experience you will get a good start with the instructions for completion.

It is membership registration time again and a motion was passed to extend the registration deadline to Septem-ber 30, 2020 because of the ongoing Covid 19 situation. There are three ways to pay your $35 membership this year.

1. a) On the next page you will find the Membership Registration Form you can print out, complete and mail with your $35 cheque to Parksville Quilt House Quilters, P. O. Box 1177, Parksville, BC , V9P 2H2.

b) On the website under Members Only, Documents and Forms you will find the same Membership Re-newal Form you can print out and complete to submit with your $35 cheque to the address above. The website is https://www.parksvillequilthousequilters.com/

2. You can also find an Online Membership Form under ‘Join Us’ located in the dark blue section at the top of the website. Complete this form online and hit ‘submit’ at the bottom of the page. You then have the choice of paying your $35 by mailing a cheque to the address shown above in 1a or by e-transfer to [email protected]

3. Contact DiAnne at [email protected] to make arrangements to deliver your paperwork and cheque to her personally or have someone come by your house for a pick up.

If you would like your membership card right away, a self-addressed, stamped envelope is required, otherwise your card will be available at our first get-together meeting.

Please note that in order to enter a quilt, place items for sale in the boutique or participate in one of the challenges at the 2021 Quilt Show and Sale, you must be a member in good standing by September 30, 2020.

THE “NO NINE-PATCH” UGLY FABRIC CHALLENGE

Hello again from the No Nine-Patch “Ugly” Fabric Challenge people - Ionne (pronounced Iona) and Mickey (pronounced Mickey). Yes, we agree, the fabric wasn't really ugly, just maybe a little difficult to incorporate!

Wow!! Thank you to everyone for taking part in this little challenge, you are all very inspiring. Well done, you!!

We had over half of the sold kits returned as finished items, we think that's pretty good for a challenge and especially in these strained times.

So these are the three favourites as voted on by guild members:

Since it is going to be a while before we can give prizes out in person, the prizes will be mailed or hand delivered (from a safe distance).

Many thanks to Cindy of Cindy's Threadworks for providing the prizes. (I love shopping at Cindy's - she lives dangerously close to me! ;-))

SCALLOPED EDGES REINVENTS ITSELF...

Scalloped Edges reinvents itself during Covid isolation.

Let me introduce you to our satellite group, Scalloped Edges, Margaret F., Fran W., Elizabeth H., Tracey T., Barbara K., Marnie B., Sue J., Marty W., Fran H., Kathy C. and me, Frankie. We are usually a very active group meeting every Tuesday morning and twice a month we do a full sew day. We encourage and inspire each other; we work on group projects, taking things outside our comfort zone. We do Comfort Quilt projects and stockings and placemats.

The Covid self isolation has forced us to change the way we do things. So we created a Messenger group on Facebook; we check in each morning. We chat about the weather, what’s on for breakfast etc. and share what our plans for the day are. There is often an ongoing conversation throughout the day and of course the “good night ladies” end of day check in. It has been a great experience sharing this down time with our Messenger friends.

But one of the most exciting parts of this reinvention of our group activities has been doing virtual sew days. We have had 3 so far, the first one was making a charm square tote bag. A few of us had taken the class at the guild some 10 years ago so we all worked along for a day. We met in a video chat at 9:59 a.m. precisely and discussed what we were doing for the next few hours then went on to work on it, of course being available by Messenger for any issues that might arise. Video at lunch and a bit of a show, how it is going and a final show and tell at 3 on another video chat.

Margaret’s bag & kitties Sue’s bag Our next sew day was a do your own thing and we all worked on unique projects. Again loads of fun and a wee bit of completion in the productivity department. We hosted our last sew day a few weeks ago and our fearless leader Sue J. led us through a scrappy bargello project. Fabulous to see the wide range of different quilts that came from the same process.


SCALLOPED EDGES REINVENTS ITSELF... CONT’D

We continue to mark special occasions in our lives. We routinely acknowledge birthdays at our regularly weekly meetings and mark “special” birthdays with a road trip and lunch; but of course, all of that has been curtailed because of isolation. We have dropped off cards and FQ’s to birthday girls but for our “special” significant birthday we did a driveway birthday celebration. We arrived at 10 a.m. with wine and cupcakes and lawn chairs and had a great time marking Margaret F.’s birthday in April. First time I have visited the bottom of a wine bottle before noon! Even her fire dept. did a drive by with sirens and horns ablazing.

Sooooo much fun.

Just prior to the June newsletter coming out, 3 of our members revealed their Guild “No Nine Patch” challenge to the group via messenger. 3 very different uses for the not so ugly fabric.

I think we have made the best of an uncomfortable situation by encouraging each other to stay connected to our social network. Cheers all, Happy Quilting and Enjoy.

QUILT SHOW UPDATES

General Update:

We know current events are still impacting our show planning and potentially what our show may look like or if we are able to proceed with a show in 2021 (well, in the traditional fashion). We continue to monitor the events happening around us, including how other quilt shows and events are conducting virtual events. We still don’t know exactly what the spring of 2021 will look like, but each month we are understanding more about the potential parameters that will remain in place. Therefore, we continue to take steps to delay any new expenditures so we can preserve those resources should we wish to reallocate them differently. The core show planning committee is preparing a potential “Options going forward”

discussion paper for the Guild Management Committee over the next month. If you would like to connect with me regarding any ideas or suggestions please do so, my email is listed below, or give me a call. We will have a better understanding of how current and future events/issues facing our communities,

management’s thoughts on potential options and what are the next planning steps in the coming months. For now, we are still actively planning what we can do for the show given the above parameters.

stores, since there are customer limits and distancing protocol in place the timeframe has been set for August

closing (depending on stock levels). September will see exciting renovations for a October reopening under new ownership! Current Staff will be returning and sew many new

items will be added to our current lineup!

LOOKING BACK...

What is so amazing is some of Martha’s

satellite group still belong to the

guild. Over the years they supported our

guild with their loyalty and

contributions. The strength of the

Parksville Quilters is based on the hard

work and efforts of our members. They

built a foundation and set the stage for

what we are as a guild today.

Over the next months, look for more

stories about our historical

development…how we developed from

memberships of 100 and less, to the

Parksville Quilters of today.

WHO WE ARE

Member interview: Sue Gauthier Over the next few months I will be interviewing Guild members for the Newsletter. If you think of someone that would be interesting to other members please let me know and I will be happy to contact them. They could be long time or newer members. Sue Gauthier joined our guild 2 years ago and was welcomed properly at the New Member Tea held that fall. While there, a number of new members got together and started their own satellite group. For Sue, this was invaluable as she felt connected right away. She isn't sure she would have remained a member without the group and the camaraderie it brought for her. It's a big guild and just coming to meetings without having any people she knew was not comfortable. Sue was a nurse for 30 years and a nursing teacher at University of Alberta for 15. Though born in Guelph, Ontario, Sue's family moved to Edmonton and she did her growing up and had her nursing career there. As soon as she retired, she and her husband bought and moved to her parents’ home in Qualicum Beach. This was her escape to Vancouver Island. Her two sons (and no grands yet) still live in Edmonton but do come to visit. When Sue was a young woman, her mother told her that if she wanted a new dress, she would have to make it. She did and went on to make clothes for her sons when they were young. Quilting has been a hobby for about 20 years but she is not a prolific quilter as some others are and that is OK. Like many of us, Sue is a procrastinator so is working on a project she started about 15 years ago. We all know how small our quilting world is and as an example, Sue's original quilt teacher in Edmonton now lives also in Qualicum Beach. This year Sue is doing a lot of bushwhacking in her yard. The ivy is overgrown everywhere. Another work in progress. Thanks Sue for joining us. ~ Elaine Eddy
