Life is not easy, and the Christian life is not an exception. God knows that you will have questions, doubts, and fears during the hard times. Part of finding God’s purpose for you is to recognize that He can handle your hard questions, and that He wants you to ask them to draw you into a closer relationship with Him. When difficulties come, you can either pull away from God or you can choose to draw as close as you can, seeking answers to life’s questions by searching Scripture, praying feverishly, and standing on God’s promises. I encourage you to take your toughest questions to the Lord today. Ask Him to reveal His purpose for you, so your relationship with Him can grow even stronger.

Family of the MonthEd Bernardo

Ed Bernardo was born in Annville, PA. He is the youngest of 8 children. He graduated from Annville High School in 1951. After high school Ed began his career at Bethlehem Steel quarry, where he would retire after 32 years.

Although Ed knew his future bride for most of his life, they only began dating after they had both graduated from high school. The couple married in 1956. In May they celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary! Shortly after they wed, Ed was drafted into the Army, where he spent the next six years serving his county. They have a daughter, Debi, who currently lives in Ponte Beach, Florida.

Ed’s favorite pastimes include playing cards, golfing and dancing. He is also a classic car enthusiast. He fondly recalls the time spent traveling with Palm and the beautiful places they got to see.

Ed moved to the cottage this past December. He enjoys living here and likes to attend our musical programs. His two favorite things about living at Columbia Cottage are the kind people who care for him and the delicious food served at meals!

July Fun Facts

We enjoyed a very special Mother’s Day with a fun activity!

There are many countries which have their Independence Day during the month of July. These include the United States, Belarus, Venezuela, Argentina, Belgium, the Bahamas, and the Maldives. The national days for France and Canada occur in July as well.

July is the warmest month in the Northern Hemisphere on average. It is similar to January in the Southern Hemisphere.

Sometimes the hot, long days of July are called the “dog days of summer”.

It is sometimes called the Hay month because the grass dries out due to a lack of rain and can be made into hay.

July’s birthstone, the ruby, is often associated with contentment, love, passion, and integrity.

Cottage ST★RSteph Matarazzi

Steph Matarazzi is our July Cottage Star. Steph has been a part of our food services team for over 15 years! Her creativity and passion for cooking shine in the dishes she prepares for our residents. Steph’s favorite thing about working at Columbia Cottage is her interactions with the residents and hearing their life stories.

Her family owns a camper at Rehoboth Beach, DE. This is her favorite place to relax, she especially likes to kayak when she is there. Steph and her husband John have been married for 38 years and they have two children, John and Anna.

Steph’s co-workers say the things they appreciate most about her, are her sense of humor and the awesome food she creates. Thank you for being a part of our team, Steph!
