As relationship and finan-

cial coaches Jim and I real-

ize the exquisite futility of

making resolutions for the

new year. The failure rate

is incalculable because

resolutions are all about

change– diet, health, fi-

nances and social connec-

tivity. The real reason

resolutions don’t work is

that real change requires

behavior modification .

For the most part resolu-

tions fail because they are

neither well thought out

nor sustainable. The diet

that looks so good and

seems so doable on January

1st can quickly become a

budget-busting nightmare.

The gym membership kicks

the excuse mill into high

gear– the weather, too

busy, and of course the

most famous lines of all:

“tomorrow, tomorrow, I

promise tomorrow…”

Changing the way we think

and feel about ourselves

and our places in the larger

community is a lifelong

process of evolution. We

all know that eating

healthy, getting at least a

modicum of exercise , tak-

ing our various supple-

ments and doctor ordered

medications all contribute

to our longevity. Getting

our finances– no matter

how meager, under control

is an absolute. Effectively

dealing with our social

prejudices and phobias

serve to make us better

people

Real commitment to

change has nothing to do

with a date on a calendar.

It has everything to do with

ongoing introspection, faith

in self and engaging in

positive self-speak. Behav-

ior modification starts with

defining realistic goals,

creating an action plan that

removes any and all im-

pediments to those goals

and finally mastering the

goals.

You don’t need a degree in

psycho-babble, just the

dedication to becoming the

person you want to be on

your own terms and in your

own way.

"Goals allow you to control the

direction of change in your

favor." ~Brian Tracy.

Why Resolutions Don’t Work Making resolutions is a cleansing ritual of self assessment and repentance that demands personal honesty and, ultimately, reinforces humility. Breaking them is part of the cycle. ~Eric Zorn

Planning For The College Life

Consider ALL Academic

Possibilities

by Jim Eastwood

In a recession, many people

will tend to consider

‘cheaper’ schools in order to

try to realize the dreams of

attending college for their

children. Some inexpensive

schools are terrific (indeed,

some of the best schools in

the world are tuition-free, or

very close to it!), and think-

ing about costs is not a bad

idea. However, your college

funding advisor can help you

see how to effectively assess

the OVERALL cost of a

school. Some private col-

leges and universities may

have a prohibitive-looking

tuition cost, leading parents

of deserving students to

hang their heads and think

“There is no WAY we can

afford that school!” In

point of fact, however,

many of these institutions

have extensive aid pro-

grams that cover huge per-

centages of the costs for

students who are accepted,

so do not despair!

• State Schools –

State schools are a good

option and should be on

your child’s list of schools

to apply to. When you are

in a slow economy you

want to have as many pos-

sibilities available to you as

you can. State schools are

generally far cheaper for

residents than private

schools and many provide

a very good education. In

fact, some state schools are

so well-respected that they

rise to the top of the wish

guess that most of these same people

would be terrified at the site of a

brownish black forest, or grass that

appears as if it is on life

support. And quite pos-

sibly these are the same

people who never recycle

anything!

At Emy Baker’s Origi-

nals we take extreme

pride in the fact that we

go the distance when it comes to manu-

facturing products that are 100% eco-

friendly inside and out. None of our

products contain phthalates which are

substances added to plastics to increase

their flexibility, transparency, durabil-

ity, and longevity.

Phthalates are used in a large variety of

products, from enteric coatings of phar-

maceutical pills and nutritional supple-

ments to viscositycontrol agents, gel-

l i n g a g e n t s , f i l m - f o r m e r s ,

stastastabiers, dispersants, lubricants,

binders, emulsifying agents, and sus-

pending agents. End-applications in-

clude adhesives and glues, electronics,

agricultural adjuvants, building materi-

als, personal-care products, medical

devices, detergents

and surfactants, packag-

i n g , c h i l d r e n ' s

toys, modelling clay,

waxes, paints, printing

inks and coatings, phar-

maceuticals, food prod-

ucts, and textiles.

(Source: Wikipedia) So as you can see

it is very difficult to escape them. I

don’t say this to scare the beegeebees

out of you , but because Jim and I real-

ize that education and safe products

availability are the keys to wellbeing

and environmental change and that is at

the top of our list of priorities.

A 2007 study by the National Resource

Defense Council (NRDC) spiked this

public debate. In testing fresheners sold

at a Walgreens drug store, the study

concluded that many contained chemi-

cals that could cause developmental

"Sustainable means using methods,

systems and materials that won't de-

plete resources or harm natural cy-

cles" (Rosenbaum, 1993).

Sustainability is a word that is bantered

about in the business world, among

environmentalists and other visionaries

who realize that we absolutely must do

better in the way we deal with garbage;

unnecessary and non-recyclable pack-

aging that accounts for almost 1/3rd

of the 250-400 million tons of garbage

generated each year in the U.S.

The real key to sustainability is trans-

parency—creating dialogue and part-

nerships with consumers. Keeping

them informed about products, their

uses and safety factors has to be a com-

pany priority, along with a commitment

to green manufacturing processes.

When Jim and I gave birth to our baby–

Emy Baker’s Originals, LLC, which is

a green products company, one of the

things we frequently heard is how sick

and tired some people are of hearing

the word “green”. I would venture to

list of excellent students!

• Ivy League (and other high-

profile schools) – Many people wouldn’t

even consider applying to Ivy League

schools because of the sticker shock. If

your child has the academic chops for

one of these eight schools, however, in-

clude them on your child’s college wish

list. As mentioned briefly above, along

with many top-tier schools, Ivy League

institutions have huge endowments and

they offer generous financial aid pack-

ages designed to allow attendance for

those from any financial background. If

your child is an excellent student, there is

no reason that you shouldn’t have him or

her apply to dream schools. Sometimes

those dreams can come true, after all…

• Colleges Close To Home – With

costs rising, it might be prudent for your

child to look at colleges and universities

that are near home to keep costs down.

While this might not be the most exciting

proposition for many college-bound stu-

dents, travel costs can put a huge dent in

many family’s budgets. If there is a desir-

able university in your area, many fami-

lies have found that it can be very cost-

effective for students to live at home.

Room and board at college can cost as

much as tuition, and sometimes even

more. Whether at home, or closer to

home, it is something to consider for

some families.

The financial side of college or univer-

sity attendance obviously depends on a

variety of factors, and we are pleased to

help parents prepare in every way pos-

sible for this undertaking. One of the

things that we have done to help with

the general understanding of college

funding efforts, is to create a free report

with an overview of some of the impor-

tant details surrounding the costs of the

college years. If you would like a no-

obligation copy of this report, please

give us a call at 888-799-4410.

Heading into 2012, we will also be

continuing our constantly updated Col-

lege Funding Workshops, to provide a

more detailed presentation of the facts.

Our workshops are free, as well, but

because of seating constraints atten-

dance is available only with advanced

reservation. Dates, locations, and times

for these workshops are available at

440-263-1575, or by going to our web-

site at www.collegeboundcash.com.

Cookies, candy, candles, and even

magazine subscriptions have been used

for years in fundraising programs.

What sets our fundraising program

apart from the others is that we feature

100% all natural biodegradable tea

bag freshening products that are pack-

aged in 100% recyclable materials,

including the labels. Your customers

and reproductive problems, especially

for infants [source: NRDC]. It high-

lighted the presence of phthalates,

chemicals that manufacturers use as

plastic softeners and to hold fragrances.

California and Washington have

banned the sale of children's toys con-

taining phthalates because of their link

to hormonal disruptions in additional

studies on animals.

All of our freshening products– Car,

Dorm, Kitchen and Shoe Teas are made

from 100% phthalate free all natural

materials– natural as in from the earth.

From the core product to the outer

packaging materials, everything is bio-

degradable and/or recyclable right

down to the labels, a claim few manu-

facturers could make.

While we don’t recommend it, our

body scrubs are all made from edible

products. You can clearly understand

and pronounce the names of all of the

ingredients. They are packaged in

100% recyclable containers.

Our products will never win any

awards unless there is one for product

safety, simplicity, sincerity and what

we firmly believe to be sustainability!

We will let you, our retail and whole-

sale partners be the judges.

Sir Michael Perry, Chairman of Centrica

PLC states that “The brands that will

be big in the future will be those that

tap into the social changes that are tak-

ing place.” Jim and I feel confident

that the Emy Baker’s Originals brand

will be among those that make a sig-

nificant change in the way consumers

view freshening products.

At Emy Baker's Originals, LLC, green isn't just a word, it is a way of doing

business , but not "business as usual". For us doing business means provid-

ing a safe and eco-friendly way to freshen your living spaces - be it your

homes, cars, big rigs, RVs or boats. Doing business means manufacturing

100% biodegradable fresheners that travel with you , whether it is for work

or for pleasure, and personal care products that are healthy alternatives to

what is currently available in the marketplace. But most importantly our

mission is to create partnerships with every consumer and business inter-

ested in reducing the carbon footprints that take their toll and change our

environment forever.

“When someone you love becomes a

memory, the memory becomes a treas-

ure.”

The Lasting Impression Bereavement

Tea is a gently scented tea bag fresh-

ener, containing 100% biodegradable

material, that is tucked inside a muslin

bag and discretely placed in the casket.

It provides an additional layer of

thoughtfulness and comfort for the be-

reaved, especially in services where

flowers are not a part of the funeral

ceremony.
