2007 2008

As most of you know, Executive Director Joan Carlson moved on to assume her new position in Palm Beach as of September 1, where she is once again making a differ-ence for animals. On behalf of Joan and the Humane Society, we thank the many of you who contributed in her honor to our Spay/Neuter Fund.

October 1, was the beginning of a new fiscal year for us, and there are many exciting things happening. Construction is almost complete on the large animal pavil-ion and open-air pavilion. Both are welcomed additions.

The shelter is in good hands with our strong management team, animal technicians, volunteers, and Care Cadets. This dedicated

group shows every day how much they love animals. You can help, too. If you have some extra time, please call our Volunteer Coordina-tor. Please donate – every penny makes a difference, whether you can give a little or a lot. Ask our Director of Development about becoming a Tooth Fairy or Guardian Angel, making a memorial gift, or even joining our BIG PAWS Society. There are many programs for you and/or your pet. Consult the cal-endar on p.15, or call the specific program coordinator's extension listed here or on the back cover.

On behalf of the animals, thank you for being a friend. May your lives be filled with purrs and wags.

Surprise! The Humane Times is now in COLOR. This is how we got here:

The first edition of the Humane Times was published in winter of 1986, making this the 21st an-niversary issue. Until three years ago, it had been under the capable editorship of Nancy Benedict. When Nancy decided to retire from this volunteer position, I was asked to assume the job. I was reluctant, since I had been a volunteer staff writer for several years and knew the responsibilities involved, but ultimately I accepted.

When I became editor, I set goals for what I hoped to accom-plish. I wanted to add content, develop a uniform format, create informative characters (e.g. Web-ster, Memo the Cat, Vebe & Inrico), and eventually produce a full color

publication. What I did not want to do was spend any extra, since we need every cent for the animals.

The first thing I did was to go "in house" for a graphic artist—literally. My husband, an accom-plished artist and computer expert, agreed to volunteer, thereby saving that professional fee. More recent-ly, with the cooperation of Sandy Schumann/Schumann Printing, we found a way to go to full color without increasing cost.

My sincere thanks to the volunteer writing staff, Shelter staff writers, mailing team, and my “assistant,” Tiki (pictured above). I hope you'll enjoy seeing the loving eyes and the soft fur of our pets in color for many issues to come.

F ive-year-old Michael sat on the floor of HSVB & IRC’s Receiving Center,

sobbing inconsolably. He had just said goodbye to his beloved dog Buddy, and for Michael the parting was painful. The little boy’s family had fallen on hard times and had made the decision that it would be best for all involved if they surren-dered their black and tan male shepherd mix. From the minute Michael and his mother arrived at the shelter, our Hu-mane Society staff and volunteers knew that they would play a role in helping both Buddy and his family heal. Caring for animals like Buddy, as well as their families, is a group effort.

The staff in our Receiving Center spent time with Michael’s mother trying to glean information that would be helpful in matching Buddy with a perfect new home. Meanwhile, other staff and volun-teers spent time with Michael, assuring him that his beloved canine companion would be safe at the shelter and in good hands.

Later that morning, Buddy was exam-ined by animal care technicians to assess his health and give him any needed vac-cines. With assistance from Care Cadets, the friendly dog was then made com-

fortable with a warm bath, blankets for his kennel, and bowls of fresh food and water.

After giving Buddy a few days to ad-just to shelter life, he was moved to our Adoption Center where the adoption staff and volunteers work to find animals lov-ing and caring homes. The process takes time, but it’s well worth it when animals are placed with the perfect family. Aiding

in this process are other staff and volun-teers, who work with our animal behav-iorist to help pets like Buddy. By providing socialization, basic obedience training, and exercise, the dog's chance for adop-tion is improved. Thanks to all involved, Buddy found a new home in three weeks.

Lost animals, like Babs, receive equal care and attention at the shelter. The beautiful black cat was brought to the shelter after she was found wandering in Indian River County. Knowing that most lost animals once came from a home where they were loved, staff and volun-teers in our Lost and Found Department take great care in investigating animals.

They often spend hours pouring through missing pet reports with the hope that they will be able to reunite pets with their families. Each animal is carefully scanned for a microchip implant. However, if no reunion occurs, staff and volunteers will work just as hard to place a lost animal like Babs into a new loving home.

Over 7,000 animals come through our doors each year, and staff, volunteers,

board members, and Care Cadets make a difference in the lives of the animals at the Humane Society. Whether the job is to care for the animals, investigate cruelty, maintain the facility, or counsel and educate the public, each person at our facility is acutely aware that the "work is love made visible." All animals that enter through our doors are special, and our goal is to find each adoptable pet a new loving home. The Humane Society is much like a family. For everyone the mission is personal and the goal is the same: to help those who need us and to be a voice for those who cannot speak for themselves.

“Work is love made visible.” – Khalil Gibran

PAW PATTERby

Vebe the Catand

Inrico the Dog

Vebe here...we’ve had some exciting things go-ing on at the shelter. The people had a great time and found super deals at the “No Fleas” Market. Naturally, my pal Ric entered the Mutt Show. “Hey, Vebe, I still think I should have won for champion tail-wagger or best dumb trick.”

In November, Vebe & I posed with Santa Paws. We think we look fetching in Santa hats and Rudolph antlers. I also plan to register for some of those rally and training classes that begin in January. I’m always looking to further my education.

“Ric, rumor has it that this year’s Cause for Paws events will have an added feature, a Doggie Fashion Show. You really should be a model, you know.”

On a more serious note, we want to remind our readers of the dangers of holiday items, especially to our younger and more curious furry friends. Shiny tinsel and ball ornaments can attract little paws and cause cuts and choking. Then there are those no-no holiday plants: mistletoe, kalanchoe, and poinsettias (though poinsettias aren’t deadly, they can cause upset tummies.)

Don’t forget to shop at the shelter’s “All for Paws” gift shop and buy your 2008 Humane Society calendar, featuring many of our old friends.

We wish our readers a peaceful, happy, and healthy New Year. We’ll be back chatting in 2008.

Cheers!

We extend thanks to our Humane Heroes – Michael, Scott, and Steve Tavlin of Vero Beach.

When Michael Tavlin decided to do something to help wildlife as part of a community service project for Temple Beth Shalom, his father and brother pitched in to help. Michael created a bumper sticker for HSVB & IRC. His brother and father helped with the print-ing and soliciting of a $1 dollar donation for the stickers. All of the money from the sale of the bumper stickers is allocated to helping our wildlife programs, including the Gopher Tortoise project.

If you would like to help local wild-life by purchasing a “Watch Out For The Critters” bumper sticker, stop by the Humane Society or the Humane Society Thrift Shops.

The Littlest Angel

You all know that person, the one on your list that you never seem to be able to figure out what to give. Why

spend lots of time in the stores agonizing over whether you've made the right choice? Give the gift that keeps on giving all year long. Choose a Guardian Angel or Tooth Fairy sponsorship.

These wonderful programs will help the pets for the next year and honor the gift recipient at the same time. Guard-ian Angels sponsor a cat condo or dog kennel, providing the extras for those shelter pet residents. The honoree will receive a certificate and their name on a plaque on the condo or kennel.

A Tooth Fairy sponsorship helps fund dental procedures for the needy dogs & cats. Often, pets that require dental treatment are passed over by potential adopters in favor of pets not needing this care. Tooth Fairies have already helped a number of pets this year by giving them the same chance for a home as any other. Tooth Fairies also receive a certifi-cate and acknowledgment on the Tooth Fairy Wall of Fame.

There's another good reason for making a gift of a Guardian Angel or Tooth Fairy sponsorship. It costs less than 70 cents a day! Where can you get that much love for such a bargain price? (Fill out the application on page 14)

The holiday season evokes a sense of tradition. One little angel is making a tradition of giving out of her love for animals. The tradition was born a few years ago after Lilly Connell and her family adopted “Lolita Ruby”, a sweet and energetic little dachshund. Now “Lolita” would have a home, but what about all the others at the shelter? Lilly wanted to help.

As she did for her seventh birthday, Lilly chose not to celebrate this year’s eighth birthday with pretty packages tied up with bows. Rather, she again selflessly asked her party guests and her family to give her checks made pay-able to the Humane Society – checks she would use to support the Guard-ian Angel program. Twice now, Lilly has personally delivered a generous gift of $400 to the Animal Center. Shelter staff and Board President, Chalmers Morse, greeted Lilly’s arrival with a celebratory cake and a little gift of their own. It was only appropriate that our special “littlest angel” be honored for her kindness to animals.

We see animals, lots of animals, in Lilly’s future. Incidentally, we are proud to say that Lilly’s first Pet of the Week newspaper article appeared in the 9/27/07 edition of Your Hub. She was promoting “Calin” a sweet, young, deaf bulldog in need of a home. Imagine her joy when she was told “Calin” had been adopted! We have a feeling we will be seeing more pet profiles by Lilly in the future.

Light it up she has, as evidenced by the huge Christmas tree she keeps lit year-round. To Betty Brightman, “Coming to work here everyday is like Christmas.”

A little over eight months ago, Betty’s flare for taking a chance led her to apply for the manager's job. “It was a bit of a gamble to take over man-aging the store, but it has turned out to be the best experience. I love it here.”

As a single parent with a grown son, whose father and brother still live back in Connecticut, she finds run-ning the thrift shop to be just what she needed to fill her days. With a solid background in retail clothing, antique shops, and managing a consignment store, Betty brought a wealth of experience to the job. Her influence is felt immediately, as soon as one steps through the door.

Thrift volunteer Pat Stanley says, “It’s fun to work here, because the store has taken on a homey, friendly atmosphere for both customers and volunteers. Betty’s influence sets the tone, and that’s why so many come back time and time again. She treats this like it’s her own home, clean and organized.”

We're looking for our next cover model. Wouldn't it be great to have your furry one appear on a future is-sue of the Humane Times? We'd love to feature pets adopted from our shelter, but any rescued animal qualifies. Photos must be appropriate to our state-ment of purpose (e.g. no fighting animals, exot-ics, improper transport methods, etc.) Photos in vertical format are pre-ferred but others will be reviewed. You must be able to provide the origi-nal print, or a high-reso-lution digital (apx. 2500 pixel). Our next issue will be spring, so we'd love to see spring colors, but we'll need summer, fall and winter, too. The pet model will receive cover photo credit in the Hu-mane Times. Please send inquiries to the editor at: [email protected].

The 2008 Humane Society cal-endar highlights the many home-less animals that came to the Good Shepherd Haven of Hope Animal Centers because they were lost, abused, abandoned or displaced by no fault of their own. Through our adoption program, these animals are now members of loving families where they enjoy a life of happi-ness.

Our Animal Centers are the central place in Indian River County

for animals. Our dedicated staff and volunteers provide a variety of programs with the goal of “keeping pets and people together.”

Hook CilbrithChance Barker

Jasper and Joey Thompson

Chance is a sweet natured four-year-old terrier mix that has definitely landed on her paws this time! She had been ad-opted and rejected once but found her perfect home last year, with 11-year-old Alec Barker and his parents, Pam & Doug. At first, she suffered a little separation anxiety, but soon learned the Barkers would always be there for her. She happily runs and plays with Alec and even likes to hear him play his violin.

Chance enjoys lounging and squirrel watching in her back yard, or relaxing on her love seat with her special pillow and blanket. This grown up girl was already trained, does well off-lead, and obeys commands.

Chance enjoys her walk to the school bus stop each morning to see Alec off and visit with the other children. This former orphan is now a beloved companion and a neighbor-hood favorite.

Sherry Cilbrith was on a mission when it came to adopting Hook. Now that Hook has joined the family, her husband Sean admits that he’s a pretty cool cat, but it wasn’t always that way. “I love cats and my husband doesn’t,” Sherry says.

The family already included a Maltese and a Bulldog, but Sherry was drawn to Hook the moment she saw him. Finally, after many torturous shelter visits, Sean relented and present-ed Sherry with a shelter gift certificate.

When Hook was in the multiple cat room, he was always the first one to greet visitors. He still loves company and makes it a point to greet and sit on everyone’s lap. Instead of a tail, Hook has a little fluff ball with a hook at the tip – hence the name. The dogs, Luna and Tag, get along well with him, and he has actually helped bring the two dogs closer together. You could say he’s got the whole family hooked!

If you are a cat and need a home, it’s highly recommended that you apply for permanent residence with Ivy and John Thompson/King. The boys, Joey and Jasper, were adopted in Vero but soon moved to a big, old farmhouse in New Hampshire. Farm chores included patrolling the house underfoot, sleeping with Ivy and John to protect them from farmhouse night noises, and making sure the sun porch was properly tested for snoozes on cold New Hampshire days.

Joey is curious and doesn’t think things through; Jasper is more cal-culating, and able to size up the situation quickly. Therefore, he doesn’t spend as much time in the detention corner as Joey. Both get along well with the two dogs in the family – Flower, who puts up with their antics, and Norman, the family patriarch, who doesn’t!

The Thompson/King clan are all back in Vero now. John is a good friend of the Humane Society and helps with animal protection and rescue.

N e w B e g i n n i n g s a n d H a p p y E n d i n g sFlush James

Kali & Tiger Garrett

I’m famous, or I should say, I’m named after a famous dog named Flush. He narrated the novel Elizabeth Barrett Browning wrote in the 1880’s about her courtship with Robert Browning. My mom, Christina, is a huge fan of Ms. Browning. She’s teaching the novel to her 7th grade class, and I get to go along as a visual aid. How cool is that?

Life didn’t start out so good for me. At 6 months I was running around the shelter with about 150 other puppy-mill rescues trying to look adoptable. Then, in came Christina and Lawrence James looking for their dream dog. It was touch and go at first, but I knew (me, me, pick me!) I wrapped my paws around Lawrence’s leg and wouldn’t let go until I heard him say, "We’ll take this one.”

It has been two years and I’m living in total bliss with two dogs, a huge orange cat who swats me on the rump, and two cockatiels. I love howling, jumping in the pool, and hugging mom or dad while staring deeply into their eyes. However, the best thing was when they got married; I was the “best groomsman." I was so excited, I walked down the aisle on my hind legs – and that’s how this Flush became famous.

Kali, a sweet calico cutie and Tiger, a beautifully marked gold tabby, (brother and sister) not only found their "forever" home, but became the subjects of a booklet, The Story of Two Little Kittens, written by Mom Sue.

It all started when they were three months old and came to live with Sue and Walt. The kittens were such little athletes, leaping a two and a half foot gate in the shake of a lamb's tail – a three foot one was no problem either. Sue's friend gave them some little fake mice that they hid and found, while skidding around corners with rugs flying every which way. They also dis-covered shower curtain rings made neat toys – just hook a couple together and bat them all over. Sue and Walt have to pick up, as most kitties don't retrieve (that's stuff for dogs).

Four years later, in their continuing saga, they are grown ups, but playful as ever and enjoying life in The Isles of Vero. Last April they had a birthday party, including a candy mice topped cake. The human guests partied, but the birthday siblings had to sit it out, as 4-footers are not allowed in the dining room.

Lady Luck embraced them, for not only are they together, but they are much loved by their mom and dad.

Students and teachers at Oslo Middle School put compassion in action when they came to the aid of HSVB & IRC’s animals. After reading Because of Winn Dixie, a story about a child who befriends and takes in a homeless dog, the students decided to do a service project to help the shelter’s ani-mals.

Soon after, teachers Heide Schwager and Susan Tolliver visited the shelter and asked staff to speak to their 6th grade students about pet overpopulation and the role the shelter plays in the com-munity. While the shelter staff was grateful for the opportunity to meet with the Oslo Middle School students, HSVB & IRC was pleas-antly surprised when the students became “Guardian Angels” by rais-ing enough money to sponsor two

kennels. They also had a pet supply drive, collecting six boxes of toys and other pet care items to help our shelter's many animals.

The students sent hundreds of letters thanking the shelter’s staff and volunteers for helping the animals of Indian River County. Alyssa wrote, “Thank you for teach-ing me about the Humane Society and teaching me about spaying and neutering. I’ll try to tell every-one to spay or neuter their pet. I understand that there are too many animals and not enough homes, so if I ever get a pet I will get one from the Humane Society.” Another classmate wrote about putting what she had learned into action at home. “I have news that my Mom and I are thinking about spaying my dog, so now you may have less dogs. Love, Mydelle.”

Speaking for the Animals

Who will

speak for us?

With your help, we can make a tremendous difference in the lives of thousands of animals in our community. Please give generously this holiday season so that the animals can have a second chance.

The Humane Society of Vero Beach and Indian River County is excited to announce that we’ve had an overwhelming response to our free spay/neuter voucher program. Thanks to grants and private donations, we’ve been able to make this special program available to anyone in the community showing financial need.

Although we’ve always had a spay/neuter voucher program, HSVB&IRC decided to step up our efforts by participating in Spay Day USA last February. This is a national campaign created to help educate the public about pet overpopulation and provide pet owners with spay/neuter information in their community.

After receiving funds from the Florida Friend Animal Grant, HSVB&IRC initially estimated that we could provide enough free spay/neuter vouchers to sterilize 100 cats and 60 dogs for Spay Day USA. Thanks to an additional donation made by an anonymous donor, we were able to offer enough vouchers to sterilize 243 cats and 165 dogs throughout the year. While the grants and donations were a tremendous help, the shelter is ex-tremely grateful to three Indian River County veterinarians who partnered with the Humane Society by provid-ing their services and skills, thereby allowing us to provide free spay/neuter vouchers to even more pets.

According to our recent Shelter Operations Report, HSVB&IRC has had a 6.5% decrease in animal in-takes from last year at this time. We believe our spay/neuter and education programs are making a difference, and we’re looking forward to continuing our work and participating in Spay Day USA 2008!

February 26, 2008 is designated as the next Spay Day USA.

In Memoriam In a very tragic accident, Clint

Malone was killed by a hit-and-run driver in October. He was bicycle rid-ing behind his wife Jennifer who was running and training for an upcom-ing marathon.

He had served on the Advisory Council for two years and assisted with the planned giving program.

The Board of Directors, Staff, and Volunteers want to express their sympathy to his wife, Jennifer, and their two children. A special fund has been established for

Humane Happenings

Rally challenges your dog to learn by stimulating him/her mentally. It physically gets your dog moving and “off the couch.” It provides one hour each week where you have each other’s undivided attention in a safe, indoor environment.

Rally is a sport in which the dog and handler complete a pre-designed course with a series of up to 50 different signs. Each sign depicts a symbol indicating a command or combina-tion of commands. The handler and their dog proceed at their own pace through the course. Each of the stations has a sign providing instructions regarding the next skill that is to be per-formed by both the handler and their dog. Unlimited communi-cation from the handler to the dog is encouraged.

Basic dog training for the commands of SIT, DOWN, STAY, HEEL, and COME are needed. You can train for competition…or JUST FOR FUN! New classes start in January. For information and registration, contact Connie Ellis at 388-3331, Ext. 19.
