Messes up kids is a video that on the whole emphasises Jake Bugg’s organic qualities. It features the conventions of a music video theories by Andrew Goodwin. The genre of the song is indie and the video features many shots of rundown areas and is in black and white. The beginning of the video includes a voice over interview with Jake where he talks about his background and whether he was a ‘Messed Up Kid’ showing he is organic as he had nothing given to him and he earned everything he got.

The lyrics and music are both representative of the visuals. The lyrics feature Jake singing “They sell their time, they sell their drugs, they sell their body” whilst showing different actors dressed up in stereotypical ‘chav’ clothing and a boy sitting on a scooter. The music matches the visuals because when the chorus begins the pace picks up and the video shows boys running away from the camera highlighting Jake’s poor area.

Not just this music video by Jake Bugg as an artists attracts a very similar target audience to one our band will be aiming their music at.

Having been too two Jake Bugg concerts already, I saw that he actually has a mixed target audience. He had teenage fan girls as most do but there were also adults there as he is quite a mature artists in terms of the topics and music he sings. This is further accentuated by the mature lyrics and video of ‘Messed Up Kids’.

This is quite similar

to the target

audience we will be

targeting as he

attracts mixed

genders but on the

whole, teenagers.

Jake bugg sings a mix of indie rock and folk

rock. This is slightly similar to the band we

will be creating as our band will be an indie

rock band.

In the video, the songs picks up pace and

uses a commonly used beat in rock music.

The song also contains a guitar solo which is

common with many rocks songs. The video

itself shows the genre because when the

pace picks up so does the video, whereas for

most of the video it’s slow motion.

Jake Bugg’s star isn’t too similar to the band we are trying to create. The first main difference is obviously that we are creating a band where Jake Bugg is alone. However the way he conducts himself and portrays himself is relatively similar to how we want out band to represent themselves. It is very rare you will see Jake Bugg perform live in a suit. He normally wears a shirt and jeans.

Jake Bugg is as organic as it gets in the music industry. At his concerts he performs alone with a bassist and drummer in the back. He always plays lead guitar in his music and writes his own music. Jake’s second album ‘Shangri La’ was produced by rock legend Rick Rubin but written by Jake. However, for Jake’s third album he is writing and producing it alone as the record label preferred his demos rather than the demos the producer he was working with did.
