From the Pastor’s Desk Pastor Detlev Vosgerau

I was to undergo a routine gallbladder removal [8th July] which usually is day surgery only and then a few days recovery. Unfortunately my surgery turned out to be anything but routine and I ended up a full week in recovery in hospital [returning home 15th July]. Now I am basically on sick leave and recovery. There is still a slight possibility that I might have to undergo one other procedure.

For those of you who knew of my predicament and have been praying for me I thank you very much for your care and prayers.

The saddest part of this, apart from feeling miserable and being in heaps of pain, has been the need to postpone my farewell services. It was not the way I envisaged how I would end my ministry. But then what is the old saying, “if you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans”.

It has once again made it clear that there is only one person who is in control, and thankfully it is one whom I can trust and love.

Of course I really do want to the opportunity for us to share together a farewell for the years we have had together in ministry and mission.

So I am proposing (please keep in mind that this is still tentative) that we have the following farewell services. These will take the place of current planned 9.00am Lay Reading services:

NAIN 9th August at 9.00am

GREENOCK 16th August at 9.00am

GNADENFREI MARANANGA 23rd August at 9.00am

[Guest Pastors will lead the other two services on these days.]

I do hope and pray to see you then and celebrate.

God’s blessings and grace be with you all.

Detlev

The results will be available online. He also allows the churches to freely use his photographs. Photo gallery: https://www.flickr.com/photos/paulscottinfo/albums – 61 years of photos!

A vicarage experience like no other For pastoral stream students, vicarage is a time to put all they have learnt into practice in a supervised ministry context. This placement runs from December to June and encompasses the main celebration points of the Church year.

As one of this year’s vicars explained it so well, ‘It is a time when everything comes together – all the classes, all the hours of fieldwork suddenly find their nexus and you start to realise that you might actually be able to do this (serve as a pastor) … with God’s help’.

Just prior to Christmas 2019, ALC’s vicars commenced placements with their assigned congregations, under the supervision of their vicar fathers. Vicarage has been a time of learning and adapting to new situations. COVID-19 has meant these vicars have also observed pastoral ministry firsthand during a pandemic.

Page 7: MESSENGER - Greenock Lutheran Parish · MESSENGER August 2020 GREENOCK LUTHERAN PARISH Psalm 23:1-4 . From the Pastor’s Desk ... The first step for calling a Pastor began on 22nd

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic meaning churches have been closed to worshippers since late March, Australian Lutheran College pastoral stream students (pictured, left to right) Joseph Theodorsen, Stephen Noblett and Chris Johnson have experienced vicarage placements like no other vicars before them, with unique challenges.

Some thoughts from Joseph Theodorsen (supported by Nain) on his placement at St Mark’s Mt Barker with Pastor Ben Pfeiffer…

“The ways in which members of St Marks have cared and provided for the people most at risk in our congregation has been a real blessing to witness. So many people have offered to help those who are most in need, in the limited ways they are able to, with physical distancing measures in place.

“I would go so far as to say that I think this situation (the pandemic) has helped in bringing the welfare of others to the forefront of people’s minds, which is a great thing and what we are all called to do as God’s people!”

As Chris Johnson concludes: “This unique vicarage experience has highlighted how ALC can never fully prepare a student for pastoral ministry – there are just too many unknowns, too many things to learn. What they can and have done is provide us with a basis for making decisions, a way to find these answers in the field. And they’ve helped to highlight that these decisions are never our own. They are the decisions of the parish, of the congregation, of God.

“While it might seem that we get sent out and then we’re on our own, there’s always a community which loves and cares for us. It’s a wonderful thing to experience as we face this pandemic.”

The vicars return to ALC at the beginning of Semester 2 to finalise their studies before meeting with the LCA/NZ’s College of Bishops to determine their readiness for ordination later in the year.
